Hi there. Yes, if your keyboard plugs in to AC power (wall socket) then you can use either cable and it will work fine. The only difference with the USB 3 adapter is the additional lightning power port to keep your iPhone charged.

Hey Pete, it may be helpful to say that the usb + lightning adapter can be also used to give power to external drives. With the small adapter you can only plug pen drives because they need much less energy to work, but the iPad cannot provide enough energy to make the big hard drives work, so there is when the big adapter comes to action.

Hi Pete, I'm trying to connect my Yamaha trans acoustic piano to my ipad. I have followed your video but I'm a bit confused.My piano manual states I should use a usb1 connection,but I can use a usb2 but it will run at usb 1 speed. My confusion comes with the usb3 adaptor will it be to fast to work with usb1 or usb2 cables? Any advice would be gratefully excepted. Kind regards Jack.

Hey there Jack. USB is thankfully backwards compatible so any USB 2/3 devices should still support a USB 1 connection from a device.

Thanks so much my friend! Really appreciate it. Yes, from what I have read so far We will be able to use these to connect USB drives. The only issue may be power, as some USB drives use too much power to be run. Pete I read that a usb 2.0 flash drive doesn’t need external power source when connected to the lightening adapter, but 3.0 flash drive does require external power ?

I’ve tried a bunch of both and all have required more power. Your mileage may vary but that’s been my experience.

6:57. Can you please define good to go? I can connect no problem. However, I'm limited on which synths I can record. Is there a universal app that will simply take the sounds from any synth and record it in the iPad/iPhone? (WhatYouPlayIsWhat'sRecorded?) if so, which apps and how? I have tried for months with no luck..however, I don't even use a DAW so not so much in the integration aspects (technically I get it...however I just need to understand the business logic). Thanks

Hey there my friend. I’m going to post this response on both your resent comments. It sounds like you want to record your actual hardware synth sound instead of trigger a sound in a virtual instrument. You can use apps that support inter-app audio or Audio Units, or use an app like AUM or Audiobus to send audio form one app to another. I hope this helps.

Haven’t used that particular microphone so not sure if it’s class compliant, it most work. If it doesn’t need a separate specific driver to work then it’s probably fine.

Hey Pete, thanks for all the info you provide on your channel. I purchased the lightning usb 3 adapter and plugged it in to my iPad Pro and it prompted me to update the adapter. I accidentally pressed the deferral button and now it doesn’t recognize the adapter once plugged in. Any idea on how to fix this? I’ve searched the web vigorously and I’m yet to turn up any info. Hmmmm...... I haven’t come across this as I updated my adapter and so has everyone else I’ve come across. Try closing all apps and turning up it device off and back on again to see if it prompts the update again?

Hi there. Every MIDI keyboard uses different amounts of power. I have used it successfully with all 32 and 49 key keyboards and not run in to power issues. I would like to know if I could use these Lighting/USB and Lighting/USB+Lighting to record videos in an iPhone 8 using a condenser microphone and a Steinberg interface? I ask that because in your videos you only mention that is possible to record áudio on the garage band APP. In the case of vídeos must I install any APP?

Hi there my friend. Yes, once you connect a USB microphone or interface, this becomes the audio input and output of your iPhone or iPad. So yes, if you use the camera app and shoot a video, the audio will use the microphone or interface input you have set up. I just wish these real beginner videos were easier to find. Must have watched hours and hours to get the small amount of knowledge that I have. But once found, bookmark so we can share with others. So many videos are labeled as beginner but they're not. In the midst of watching a Scene Video for BM3 and it's a 19 minute video. But I must of 2 hours into it for all the rewinding; trying to catch what is being done. Oh well, we hopefully will all get it one day.

Yes, I agree. It’s often very hard to find a balance between keeping things simple for beginners but not going to slowly for more advanced users. I try to keep things simple for he absolute newcomer but inject enough interest and additional information for the more intermediate and expert folks. Thanks for your feedback. Hearing from folks about what’s working and what’s not really helps me make sure I position my videos in the right way.

Hey there. Yes it should as long as it’s the genuine adapter. I find the genuine Apple Lightning to USB 3 adapter the most reliable but wireless mouse and keyboard usually don’t need much power.

I tried using the usb to lightning 3 adapter with my behringer usb mixer, and recording into my iPad, but for some reason there was some delay with the video compared to the sound, is there any tips? Or anything I could do to keep that from happening?

Hey there. Yes, mixers and interfaces can introduce latency (lag/delay) in to the signal which can be frustrating. The best bet is to use the mixer/interface's headphone jack as most offer latency free monitoring that way.

It works with the previous iPad Pro versions with a lighting connection, but not he new 2018 iPad Pro as this has a USB-C connection instead.

Hey there my friend. So the headphones are working by the mic is not? I have tested a USB headset before which you can see in this video - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4ZoSFzSx52I.html. Often headsets can use too much power, so you may want to try connecting to a power supply or using a powered hub.

Yes. If it is a standard class compliant keyboard it should work fine for at least the basic keyboard commands. iOS won’t support any of the custom keys however as they require a separate driver and are not compatible with iOS.

Hi there. No, unfortunately standard USB flash drives will not work with iOS natively. You would need to use an iOS specific drive like the Sandisk iXpand.

Thanks for the advice Pete. Some constructive criticism: your videos would be much more helpful if you had on screen titles for what you’re talking about. It’s just my opinion but if you’re getting revenue for advertising, having onscreen titles for the devices you are talking about is much more professional as it’s clear to your audience what you are reviewing. You’re giving a lot of information very quickly and although you have some of the info listed below, it’s better to add titles to the video. Perhaps using the actual device you’re talking about to add that capability would help

Hey there. Thanks for tuning in and taking the time to comment. Yes, you can get a Lightning to HDMI adapter, however the issue is that you then can’t plug in an audio interface at the same time as it’s using up the data port. If however you have the latest 3rd generation iPad Pro with USB-C, you can use any USB-C hub as it is not proprietary. So you can then use USB devices and have HDMI and even headphone output.

Hi Pete. Thanks for your video. One thing I'm struggling to find confirmation on is whether connecting a USB interface with the adapter will record stereo audio to video or mono. Can you confirm either way please? I'm trying to record stereo line audio to video on my iphone with a Zoom H6 and I'm considering buying one of these adapters, but it would be pointless if I can't record stereo audio with the video. Hey there. So yes, you will get stereo on videos. Which is actually a challenge sometimes as if you put a mic in just one channel, all the audio will be on that side.

Hey there. It will pop up as a drive on your Files app and you can playback audio and video directly. Very large 4K video files might be a little slow and jerky so may need to be transferred, but regular video files work fine. Hi Mandeep. Unfortunately there is no USB drive support in iOS yet, however this is coming in iOS 13 and iPadOS so will be possible soon. Hey there. In my experience, iOS doesn’t support any external cameras at all. There are some apps that can allow you to connect a webcam but the method is quite complex.

Is your mixer class compliant, meaning it can run without the use of drivers over USB? Most modern mixers and interfaces are, but some still require drivers and are therefore not iOS compatible. Can you use a normal USB stick with this device (the camera adapter) and then open up files on iPad Air 2 such as word documents and work on them just like a computer or do word documents not work? Like is it just for photos and videos (the camera adapter)?
