If you're fairly new to the world of lighting control and design, creating simple colour washes using DMX lights or constant voltage LED strip can be good fun and bring an amazing ambience to any space. However, for a truly immersive experience where you get to individually control what happens to every single LED pixel in your setup, you'll want to make the step up to the wonderful world of PIXEL MAPPING.
But don't panic - it's not as scary as it might sound! Join electrical engineer Jordan - from ENTTEC's Australian R&D facility - as he takes you on an introductory journey using a simple lighting rig (including our award-winning ELM software) that anybody can source online and set up with ease at home.
Be warned though: pixel mapping can be addictive - and we can't be held responsible for how crazy your future projects may become!

Hi Jordan, first of all thanks for all the precious informations that you're sharing in these videos. This series of tips and tricks really helped me a lot! I'm about to start my first project with Led strips, and i'm going to buy my first control interface. I was wondering when it is more convenient to use a Usb - Dmx interface like the "Ode mkii" and when it's better to use an ethernet one like the Octo. In my case i would control everything from a computer. In the near future i wish to project a stage light design for my live music set and i was wondering what is the best way to communicate with led strips without losing too much data on stage. Thanks for your time and for sharing your knowledge!

Hi Francesco, Thanks for the comment! For scalability we recommend using ethernet converters such as our OCTO and Pixelator family of products. This way you can use multiple universes of control and scale up your project as it grows. - With a purchase of each of our pixel converters you get a free license of ELM for the same universe count too! If you are a performer yourself and will be controlling lighting from the stage you may want to look at our EMU software. It features VST and MIDI integration. You can use its ArtNet output to remotely control the ELM pixel mapper. Thanks, J

This is awesome ! But I need some help where to start ! I need a controller box + led strip that can be used together! what will you recommend ? also, can I skip the pixel mapping software, and control the same LED strips with DMX (for simple effects and small show) thanx for all help.

Hi there, a great box to get started with is our OCTO (www.enttec.com/sku/71521), it's able to control 8 universes worth of LED pixels. (This sounds like a lot of data, but when you consider each LED uses 3 channels, (or for RGBW) 60 pixel per meter pixel strip, the 8 universes allows you to control around 11 meters of strip. The great thing about the OCTO controller is that when you purchase it you receive a free ELM LED control software license too! In input. If you wanted to use one universe of DMX you could use A DMX USB Pro to remotely control ELM, or use one of or ODE products to convert your DMX to ArtNet allowing control of 1 universe of LED strip. We've got a wide range of pixel strip on our website that's worth checking out. Feel free to get in touch with our team sales@enttec.com for any further advice.

Hi there, this is good info but how does the pixel controller connect to the lap top? Meaning, is it USB? or do I need an adapter of some kind? Currently I use the DMX PRO, you mention I can control ELM from - I'm assuming - EMU? so how does it all connect together? Many thanks.@@ENTTECofficial

Hi Jordan, thanks a lot for this video, really inspiring. Question, i want to build some small led screens using 16x16 pixel panels myself. I would like to control them myself from stage, I’m already running other stage lights trough ableton and lightkey and now looking how i can best add the led panel configuration. Any thoughts?

Hi Jasper, depending on which software is in control between Lightkey and Ableton the best way would probably be to map control in ELM and then integrate control using the remote control of ELM using the DMX remote and Patching the ELM fixture in Lightkey. Alternatively, you can create your sequences in ELM and then use Midi control to trigger your content from Ableton. If you want more help you can reach out to tech support at support@enttec.com and they will be able to help you further.

Hi Jordan Could this be used for an architectural model where up to 1500 individual units will have their own addressable light installed? The end result is to be used by the potential client(home buyer) to select individual units or groups of units on a touch screen and the corresponding lights will light up on the model. Must be able to use a tablet to operate selections, We want a tasteful user interface In addition to this, there will be large display screens that are also connected so that when an apartment is selected corresponding images will be displayed on the wall tv. Software to connect the sales data to the model, so that when an apartment is sold this will be updated on the model's lighting.

Can I use that program to create a graphic equalizer that I use pandora with ?
@ENTTECofficial
@ENTTECofficial 8 месяцев назад
Hi, we have a number of audio-reactive patterns on ELM (some of which look like your typical graphical equalizers) by default, the audio source is the internal loopback, so if you are playing music from Pandora on the same computer that is running ELM, it will automatically modulate the audio reactive effect accordingly. Alternatively, you can send audio from Pandora using a specific audio input jack, to make sure you don't get any stray/unwanted sound effects coming through. How many tubes of that length could be connected to that controller?
@ENTTECofficial
@ENTTECofficial 9 месяцев назад
The OCTO Mk2 can control 8 universes of data. At 8 universes you can control 4,096 channels which is 1,365 RGB pixels or 1,024 RGBW pixels. The number of tubes / length of tape the OCTO Mk2 can control is dependent on the type of tape, grouped, individually addressable and the number of pixels per meter. Please note this is not taking into account power needed for the tape, this is ONLY the number of pixels controllable by 8 universes. If you want some help with your installation please contact your local ENTTEC support team or we have a forum which could also help.
