Even though I'm building open baffle constant directive LCR speakers which significantly reduce the need for room treatment, I still plan to use it. Most of the absorption will be on the wall behind the screen to absorb the rear wave of the open baffle speakers but the side walls will also get panels. My room is built with 2x6 framing so if necessary I can have a few inches of absorption on the wall and another 6" in the wall so the necessary thickness should be easy to accomplish. As for the rear wall, the control room where front end equipment and the projector will be located is behind it. Currently I have a big opening where I originally intended to have front end equipment faced into the theater. My thinking now is to eliminate this and cut openings above the seating where I can place absorption panels that are through wall... open right through into the control room through 8 or 9" of absorption material. I'm not sure if I even need to do this but the option is available if it proves necessary. Most people really don't understand the need for room treatment, it's good to see videos like this promoting it. A lot of speakers out there have very poor off axis response and for those, room treatment is even more important. Proper room treatment can make a bad speaker sound good and a good speaker sound great. It's definitely worth doing! Great video!

Dont chase gear, room treatments will make a bigger difference than any speaker or amp upgrade. Once your your room is treated any upgrades will be hugely magnified.

I am using acoustic panels from GIK. Right now I’ve got 8 absorber panels, 4 of them include scatter plates. I’m looking to add a handful of diffusion panels.

I have the same panels GIK 4" Impression, but the panels were damaged, and GIK is currently replacing the damaged panels. Acoustic panels are essential to any home theater, movie, music, gaming, and podcasting. I'm in the beginning phases right now, and I only have two so far. My goal is to get 4- 6 panels throughout the basement and get some ceiling panels.

Your room needs corner bass traps. The treatments you did only helps in the mid to high freq. Thick bass traps are needed to address the lower freq problems. Get a Umik1 run REW and check ur rooms Freq Response. For sure you'll see where your problems are.

Not only did I want to get rid of the reflected sound coming off the back wall but I also wanted a little extra dampening! So I also went with a absorber/diffuser panel, actually the same as yours... the gik pro series panel. Correct me if I'm wrong but with my limited research... it states one shouldn't have to cover up more than 25% of reflected service (ceilings, walls, floors) and not forgetting, when the sound hits the acoustic absorption panel it practically deadens it, therefore also no need to do opposing walls! But of course first reflections coming from ones stereo speakers are little different. I know it's a positive thing but even after a month's use, I still haven't got used to the new acoustic sound of my room. I suppose this is what happens when one is an avid listener 😁

Yes you don't want to kill the room completely. It'll sound unnatural

Thanks for the video. I'm just now starting to look into room treatment. Question: I know you use a minidsp... I was wondering if you took your room measurements from rew, analyzed the results, so that you had a sound methodology for choosing and placing the acustic panels you did?

Not so much anymore. After doing this so long I have a really good idea of where to start with my treatment

I do not have acoustic panels yet. I don’t know which kind I need and my room is weird and doesn’t have nearby side walls

Hi ! The only bare wall I have is the wall behind my couch the main listening position and the couch is about 2 ft from that wall ....so i got some cork tiles and run a row of them just above the top of the couch ...to see what if any difference good or bad in sound ...did the clap test and no echoes but still a bit lively and not completely dead and sounds ok to me, Question....did you run your room correction after you treated your room and if you did ....did you notice any difference in the settings? before and after.... settings changed? Thanks !

Any acoustical changes you make you should rerun calibration. When you add acoustical treatment your ears will hear a difference which means your mic will too. There were quite a few differences in the graph results after treatment. Not as many nulls and peaks or at least not as strong.

I have a question. What if your movie room is your living room and you have a open floor plan where to your left it’s a family room and to your right is kitchen and dinning room. Can you still use acoustic panels?
@Kpaceguy
@Kpaceguy 2 года назад
You can. I wouldn't put any too far away from the movie room. Definitely treat the walls, floor and/or ceiling within the width of the speakers but it'll be pretty hard to make a difference putting treatment in the next room over if it's a pretty far distance

do you have to do the mirror for all listening positions?

If you're room is setup completely symmetrical, no. You should be able to mimic the same in the other side
