KeyShot Tutorial: How to create contrasty studio lighting from scratch using the HDRI editor. In this KeyShot tutorial I'll walk you through the process of creating a custom HDRI environment using the HDRI editor that comes with KeyShot Pro. I’ll be creating a contrasty HDRI environment using two pins. I show how to position them and how they can be adjusted.
0:50 : Create a new base HDRI
2:29 : Adjustments walkthrough
4:30 : Position and adjust pin 1 to create a rim light
5:15 : Add and adjust pin 2 to create a Key light
6:58 : Color adjustments
7:25 : Save the new HDRI
7:57 : Custom HDRI workflow tip

#First! Finally HDRI! Looking forward! Never really used the HDRI editor since I felt that the environments I had were doing a fine job. Now I really want to try working with it! Thank a lot! Awesome as always!

Superb tutorial as usual, thanks Esben! Long shot, but I would love to see your entire workflow for a really detailed render, from start to finish. Not as a tutorial, but more of a time lapse style where you don't talk to camera and you just get to work and we as the viewers get to watch your keyshot decision making. I think it would be really interesting and useful!

Hey Esben! This tutorial has been really helpful for me! The only thing is, when creating a new HDRI, no light is visible on the ground, just on the part itself. Do I need to create a geometry that plays as ground for that? Thanks a lot in advance!

Thank you for uploading the tutorial so useful. I would like to know how to use HDRI in various models, from various angles, is most effective. Smaller products, bigger products, front-view and side-view, HDRIs that are the most effective for them all will be different. I hope you put up a tutorial on these things too.

Can you elaborate what you mean exactly with sunlight? Maybe a reference image? :)

Esben Oxholm sorry for late reply.. been away .. was referring to interior scene with sunlight coming into the room.. just a thought .. I never seem to get it looking correct

No worries. Ah, okay. Yeah, I think that is a tough one. I'll add it to the list and see what I can do :)

Hey Esben, I love your tutorials! Do you think you can do one that addresses water (or water droplets) on a model? Thank you!
@esbenoxholm
@esbenoxholm 7 лет назад
Yup. That is already on the list. Just haven't found a really good way to do it with KeyShot only.

Hello, Esben. Thank you so much for taking the time to make these tutorials. I've got a question about setting up the scene before using the HDRI editor. When I create a new black environment the ground/background doesn't become illuminated like yours does when adding pins. Also when I rotate the highlight behind the object for a rim light, I see the pin in the window and it washes out the whole image. What am I doing wrong?
@esbenoxholm
@esbenoxholm 6 лет назад
Hi Tyler. Thanks! It sounds like you have your HDRI shown as the background. If you go to the 'environment' tab, select the 'settings' tab and scroll down to 'Background', you should have the option to pick 'Color' and define a solid color as I have in this video.

I always struggle to make displays in KeyShot. Can't find a way to create a material that is both emissive and reflective at the same time (without having to model the glass separately). I'd love to see a tutorial covering that :) Btw, your videos are soooo helpful!
@esbenoxholm
@esbenoxholm 7 лет назад
Thanks a bunch, Arthur. Well, it is always best having the model as close to reality as possible and I would actually always recommend to have the glass for a display as a separate part. With that said, I'll add your request to my tutorial list and see what I can do :)

Hi, Esben! I'm trying to imitate the green material you used on the walkitalki, but I just can't seem to get it right. You think you can show me a screen capture of the "graph material" you used in here, please? Or just give me a small description of your selections? Thanks (:

Hello, Esben! Really cool videos! I was wondering, what lighting presets do you normally use? Because I always work in keyshot 6 with full simulation, but do you have any recommendations? Thanks a lot!
@esbenoxholm
@esbenoxholm 7 лет назад
Hi there. +90% of the time the I use standard product preset. Only adjusting things if I work with a lot of transparent materials, need caustics or work with an interior space.

Hi, Esben. I've been following your channel for a couple of months I think, and I have a question that you could answer, if anyone can. Is it possible to turn pattern, say square mesh, into gradient? But not colors, the shape gradient, different density of square pattern that has a gradiental transition in one direction. Can that be made in Keyshot, or you would have to make that texture map alone in PS and then scale it to fit? Any answer from anyone is welcome. Thanks in advance.
@esbenoxholm
@esbenoxholm 7 лет назад
If I understand your questions correctly, then I think you would have to do that in Photoshop. Could you post an image of what you mean exactly?
@josipandresic881
@josipandresic881 7 лет назад
I think that you are right, but here is the image. i.imgur.com/uEM2KlJ.png The key is to make the distance between lines bigger by every next line, in two axis, but I suppose the whole map needs to be created in this case...
@esbenoxholm
@esbenoxholm 7 лет назад
Yeah, I think you have to go with photoshop for that. At least I couldn't find a way to do it using the procedurals in KeyShot :)
