I always enjoy explanations from Olav Aleksander Bu. Especially when his outfit is as casual as here.😅

Incredible conversations with the finest minds Anthony. Enjoyed the question “Dan Plews uses HRV… do you?” Bu - “No” followed by a five minute monologue demonstrating levels and this physicist /engineer mindset on getting to measuring the first level attributes to moving forwards. The man’s approach builds from “ultimately we are atoms!” Clearly Dan Plews is an incredible coach and I’m sure he’d have an informed response about how he uses HRV but even so it invoked a remarkable barrage of insight into Bu’s intellect. This is the first time your lawyers exceptional ability to let people just talk had me hoping you’d help him find some words earlier on but then he started finding his words towards the end. Chapeau - great conversation- thank you!

Fantastic interview. Key takeaway is use data to understand yourself and your feelings better. That way you can know when and how to train rather than rely on calculated metrics. This morning my HRV score said I was in sympathetic mode but oddly I felt good. And I thought I ought to be just OK given my training this week. So I trained hard. It was fine - achieved my goals but was tough. I now feel ready for a rest day. So my data informed me I was approaching need for rest but it didn’t dictate my training.

Absolutely love his point on TSS and CTL, although that might be because I also used to be a physicist. His point on pushing to give the workout a go if you feel a bit fatigued anyway is also fantastic. Some times those sessions are the absolute best I did get a bit lost in the meandering richness of some of his answers though, a few bits benefitted from a couple of re-plays to really see how he was connecting ideas together.

A further thought about Olav’s comments on core temperature. Is there a benefit from wearing cooling shorts and vests (eg the opposite of heated vests, and for legs?) for performance?

I'm still not following the value proposition for measuring core temperature. He mentions that, just like power, it requires testing to determine where the "threshold temperature" is. Wouldn't it be the same as FTP/CP testing? In that you ride at a given power/temperature based on a percentage of the threshold value? What exactly is the difference?
