I think one problem is that many people decide something is “right“ or “wrong “ in “their heart “ which actually means it’s a belief that they grew up with, something instilled in them from family and friends and the culture that they’re used to which will make them have an immediate emotional response whenever the subject comes up. Unfortunately this doesn’t necessarily make it “right”. I truly wish logic and debate were still taught in our schools and a greater emphasis put on science and method, so that kids could grow up having a better understanding of how science works and how to pull apart and question arguments and how to spot a fallacy. Also to learn from history and how many things happening today are history repeating itself. There also used to be a greater understanding of factual reporting and journalism and once you deride that, you can start inventing your own “truth “ and pretend everything is an equally valid “opinion “ rather than some opinions being based purely on emotion and others being based on years of study and research
You are so right, Celeste! I really wish critical thinking were integrated into our school systems. Multiple-choice answers can have their place, but we are impoverishing our children by limiting their education to only that.
