It is interesting to watch different tutorials and see how different one person's method is than another's. I have taught myself how to crochet at least 3 separate times in the past.... 19 years? I'm a knitter. Knitting makes sense, there's loops on 2 needles and I never have to worry about which needle goes into which loop. Crochet always confused me because there's just one hook and so many places that the hook could go into the stitches and mess things up. If you're not careful, your flat piece can suddenly become a 3D abstraction and I just could never figure it out. This is the best video and instruction I've come across so far. Calling the stitches penne and macaroni helps my brain so much in identifying which side of the work I'm on. 😂 The way you point out how to count the stitches is also immensely helpful! I don't know why I couldn't see before that it's just... a knit stitch laying on its side. 😭

I'm so glad I came across this video! Thank you for making this simple but pointing out where to place the hook. I've always had trouble in how loose should the chain be? Just started to try again with a yarn that says it's #4 (but looks smaller than that) it also said to use a H5 hook (but it looks huge compared to the yarn). What do you recommend? Thank you!

The example used was 5 rows, and they were all pretty well matched size-wise. So as long as you use same/similar yarn, the same hook,and your tension does not vary, you should be able to make them as large or small as you like. 🐞

Is there a way to calculate how long to make the beginning chain on the rectangle so that when finished it will match the side of multiple squares? I've never been sure how to make them match up.

Depends on the squares and how big the rectangle is. My advise is to join up the squares first, and then make the rectangle to match. ;)

If you're going to keep the same color, keep your yarn attached and you'll be working backwards. At 9:10 , you'll make your chains and flip your work to where you're looking at the back of your work. You just create the next 3 DC in the next space. I hope that makes sense.

The more chains you start with, the more "slender" your rectangle will be. For a scarf, I would make my chain close to the length that I want my scarf to be (for worsted-weight yarn, each round of stitches = close to one inch of width in ALL directions on your finished item). So each round will add about one inch of width AND one inch of length to your finished scarf Hope this helps, I've made a TON of granny squares, now looking to learn how to make rectangles, triangles,etc Have a great day! 🐞

The Secret Yarnery Thanks. I already have my set so won’t be ordering any more for now. Fortunately, I’ve memorized the size by the color of the hook cause they are pretty hard to see, although I wish there was a better contrast of color between the 4.5 and 5mm. Great pattern, by the way!

I think she is using a tulip. I have some and they have that label. Instead of getting sets I have gotten those at amazon because I can order the ones I use all the time.

Dumb question....#1 why turn your work #2 why use stitch marker. Why cant you just go around and around? Thanks

Hi Susan! 1) so it doesn't twist in the direction of your dominant hand. (stays a true rectangle). 2)Same as 1. So it stays a rectangle, and not a seashell. ;) xx!
