I bought a couple of patterns through Ravelry for a similar-looking hat but neither one of them showed me how to join the two sides, how to add the label, how to cinch the top, how to sew on the button, or how to attach the pompom. This is the best, clearest, most accurate video I have seen on this, and after looking all over RU-vid for one that showed me the things that the purchased patterns I bought just told me to "join, cinch, and attch" without showing me how. THANK YOU for this very, very clear video. You are a terrific teacher.

How do I measure the starting chain? Do I stretch it or leave it slack?
@YayForYarn
@YayForYarn 9 месяцев назад
Hi. Ideally, I would recommend matching the pattern gauge with whatever yarn you are using, and then follow the numbers of starting chains given in the written pattern for the size you are making. However, if you prefer to go by measurements instead, it would be better to crochet the first few rows and measure the width of the piece rather than measuring the starting chain. The starting chain doesn't always give a precise measurement of how wide the actual piece of crochet fabric will be. I hope this helps!

I'm making a costume construction for a theatre competition and my last piece was a crochet beanie and I have been working since AUGUST to get it down and find a tutorial that worked and I absolutely couldn't. Thank you for sharing this- I love it and it makes up beautifully with a bulky yarn. @YayForYarn

Hi. To attach the pom pom without a button, you would just sew it on with a needle and thread, making sure to go through the inside of the pom pom and not just the fluff. I don't have a tutorial on making pom poms without a pom pom maker, but there are several tutorials out there. I hope this helps!

Hi. Wondering if this would work with the thermal stitch. The stitch makes a very thick and warmer fabric. Thanks.
@YayForYarn
@YayForYarn 3 года назад
Hi Sharon. I don't know if this would work with the thermal stitch. It would depend on how stretchy the fabric is. For the hat to fit comfortably, it needs to have a good amount of lengthwise stretch. I chose to use BLO single crochet because it has a lot of lengthwise elasticity. I would suggest trying a swatch in thermal stitch, and seeing if it has a good amount of stretch. Feel free to try it, and let me know how it works for you. I hope this helps!

Hi Grace. If your yarn label says it's okay, you could machine wash and dry the piece instead of blocking. (If it does not say you can machine dry it, you can just let it dry flat.) I hope this helps!

@YayForYarn
@YayForYarn 10 месяцев назад
Hi. The number of foundation chains to make will depend on several factors. 1. the thickness of the yarn you are using and the hook size you are using (these things determine the size of your stitches) 2. the size hat you want to make (the written pattern comes in 10 sizes) The written instructions for this project are available here: yayforyarn.com/easiest-crochet-hat/ The blog post gives lots of extra info on how to get started with this project for beginners. Check your yarn label to see what weight category (thickness) it is, and then you can go by the written instructions for using yarn of that thickness. The blog post will walk you through all of the steps for determining which size to make, which hook size to use for the yarn you have, and once you know those things, it also tells how many stitches to start with for the size hat you want to make. I hope this helps!

@YayForYarn
@YayForYarn 3 года назад
If you are making a hat for a 2 year old, I would recommend the Child Small if you cannot measure the child's head circumference. These hats are kind of forgiving when it comes to sizing, because they are nice and stretchy, and the brim folding up makes the hat height adjustable. As long as your gauge matches the pattern gauge, you will likely be able to follow the instructions for the Child Small to fit a 2 year old. I hope this helps!

Hi. The Adult Medium hat in #5 Bulky Weight yarn calls for 34 chain stitches. However, for the hat to turn out the correct size, it is necessary to check your gauge and make sure your stitches are the size that the pattern calls for. I have a tutorial on gauge here: yayforyarn.com/knit-crochet-gauge/

If I’m making an adult medium in the #6 bulky, how do I know how many stitches to do? I looked at the patterns but am confused as to how the numbers correlate with the sizes.
@YayForYarn
@YayForYarn 2 года назад
Hi Jacqueline. If you're making a #6 Super Bulky hat in the Adult Medium size, here's how to know which number to follow. The Adult Medium is the 9th size in the pattern, so when you see a list of numbers, the correct number for the Adult Medium will be the 9th number in the list. The instructions for using #6 yarn says to loosely ch 15 (16, 18, 22, 23, 24, 25, 27, 27, 28) sts. The 9th number in that list is 27, so you'll start by chaining 27 stitches for the Adult Medium. I hope this helps!

Hi!! I had a question about gauge not sure if you could help or not. So for the light 3 weight I saw you recommended 4 mm gauge and the number of stitches I did and it was more than 4 in so I kept going down in hook size and even using a 3mm I still couldn’t get to 28 rows without being over 4 in. Is it normal to use a hook that is 1.5 mm smaller than the recommended? Because I feel like I need to go to a 2.5mm hook and wasn’t sure if that would make a big deal
@YayForYarn
@YayForYarn 5 месяцев назад
Hi! Yes, it can be totally normal to go down more than one hook size to match the pattern gauge. As long as you match the pattern gauge and feel comfortable with the tension of your stitches, it's fine to go down that many sizes. I hope this helps!
@aahnarathore2065
@aahnarathore2065 3 года назад
I didnt do the BLO stitch, but i just normally single crocheted it. is that okay?
@YayForYarn
@YayForYarn 3 года назад
I would recommend using the BLO single crochet, as it creates a much stretchier fabric. BLO single crochet creates a nice pliable, stretchy ribbing, which will make a much more comfortable and better fitting hat. You can try using regular single crochet if you like, but the resulting fabric will be stiffer and not as stretchy, so the hat will not be as comfortable and will be more difficult to cinch closed at the top. If you're not familiar with BLO single crochet, I have a video on that on my channel. (There's a link to that in the video description.) I hope this helps!

My hat turned out great. It's beautiful. It's perfect in every way. Except that it's big enough for a giant. Seriously. Gauge alone isn't enough to account for the size discrepancy. I followed the pattern for a medium/adult to a T. I used the right sized hook and yarn. I'm sure that I did something wrong, but I don't have a clue what. This thing would comfortably fit over a motorcycle helmet. I am trying to look at this with a sense of humor, but it's hard.
@YayForYarn
@YayForYarn 3 года назад
I'm so sorry to hear that this happened! If you checked your gauge, and used whatever hook size gave you the correct gauge measurement for the pattern, the only other thing I can think of that could cause that is the yarn. (Assuming here that you are familiar with measuring gauge and adjusting hook size to match gauge when needed rather than just using whatever hook size the pattern recommends.) If your yarn is too slippery, and doesn't have any structure to it, a very floppy / pliable / slippery yarn can stretch way out of shape and not have the elasticity to come back to the original size. If you don't think that is the problem, feel free to send me a photo at blogger[at]yayforyarn.com so I can take a closer look. I hope this helps!
@write2judie
@write2judie 3 года назад
Thank you so much for your reply and thoughts. I'm sure that I must have done something wrong since I don't think it was the yarn and gauge wouldn't account for that much of a disparity in size. Seriously...this thing is big enough for a giant to wear over a motorcycle helmet! :D I still love your videos and your teaching style. I'm going to go back to the pattern and try to figure out what I did wrong.

This is a GREAT tutorial. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong but every time a finish a row, one stitch decreases. I re-started my project and counted stitches, but I keep losing a stitch.

Hi Sandy. If you're not accidentally skipping a stitch in the main part of your row, that could be caused by the placement of your first or last stitch. When working the first stitch of the row, make sure that you're inserting the hook into the same stitch that the chain 1 is coming from. As soon as you're finished working the first single crochet of the row, it can help to place a stitch marker in the top of that stitch (not the current loop on the hook) to mark the first stitch of the row. Then, when you reach the last stitch of the row, make sure there are no single crochet stitches left in the row below to work into. (We're not working into the top of the chain 1 from the row below.) You can also place a stitch marker in the last single crochet of the row to mark it, so that when you turn and work the next row, you know to insert the hook for the first single crochet into the marked stitch (and of course, put a marker in your first single crochet of the new row). When you reach the end of the row, you'll want to work your last single crochet of the row into the stitch from the row below with the stitch marker in it. You'll need to remove the stitch marker from the stitch so you can work into it, and of course, count your stitches to make sure you have the correct number of stitches in your row. I have a tutorial on counting stitches here: yayforyarn.com/count-crochet-stitches/ I hope this helps!
