Your tension may be too tight.

Please remember that crochet is practice and patience so the more you do the easier it will become :)

If you keep your hook straight and angled downwards it will help avoid catching on any yarn fibres, but you may want to try a different type of yarn. I recommend a premium acrylic such as Stylecraft Special DK or Paintbox Simply DK for beginners 😊
