How to crochet a scarf using the waffle stitch technique. This is for beginners who have a basic understanding of chains, sc and dc. This scarf works up fast and the pattern creates an almost double thickness fabric. Very thick, warm and cozy.
I used 'I Love This Yarn' from Hobby Lobby which is a worsted weight 4-ply acrylic yarn. I used a 'J/6.00mm' hook and a foundation row of 35 stitches. I used a total of 4 skeins of yarn for a scarf approximately 8' long (without fringe) and 9" wide.
Foundation: 1:55
Row A: 4:58
Row B: 7:12
Last row: 11:40
Fringe: 13:18
Pattern:
Foundation row: ch3, yo, ch1 in first ch, yo, pull through 2 loops on hook, pull through 2 loops on hook (1 loop should remain). *yo, ch1 in previous ch1 at bottom of previous stitch, pull through 2, pull through 2*, repeat from * to * for a total odd number of foundation stitches.
Row A: ch2. fpdc in second to last stitch of previous row, *dc, fpdc*. Repeat * to * until second stitch from end. dc in top ch of previous rows turn ch2.
Row B: ch2. dc in second to last stitch of previous row, *fpdc, dc*. Repeat * to * until second stitch from end. dc in top ch of previous rows turn ch2.
Continue alternating rows A and B until desired length.
Last row: ch1. sc in every stitch across. sc in top ch of previous rows turn. Fasten off.

I’ve been crocheting for decades now and just recently became aware of the chainless foundation method. I’ve tried learning it from various videos on RU-vid but gave up as it just looked too confusing. Your video and explanation is so simple and so clear! After watching your video just a couple of times, I was able to complete a chainless foundation row and I’m so proud! LOL Thank you very, very much! 🙂

I have been crocheting since a little girl, starting in the late 50's; I've looked at 1000s of patterns & videos in the last several years on the internet - and NEVER BEFORE seen the chainless foundation - AMAZING - and so much nicer looking and no awkward holes showing through! I made my own tutorial with screen shots from the video so I can remember it! I have considerable hearing loss but immediately found your voice very pleasant and easy to understand - yes, perhaps a tone of patience, as well as not rushed - a *DELIGHTFUL* teacher!! I will be checking out more of your videos & subscribing to your posts. THANKS so much for sharing with all of us

Excellent tutorial! Very clear explanation of the chainless foundation too. My compliments. The shawl looks great anyway, but IMHO the waffel stitch is better suited for a one colour yarn though. To all the hate posters: grow up! Leave this man alone. Since ancient times, crotcheting and knitting have been male occupations, like all craftmenships; look it up in your bible.

I can hardly wait to go pick up some new yarn tomorrow to begin this beautiful project. I see one for myself and a couple for gifts for the holidays. This pattern is a definite keeper. I just know you have a few more to share, those stitches are too perfect and even for a casual crocheter....NICE!!

I see this is from 2012 so Im about 5 or 6 yrs late on this comment. However, this was a great tutorial. I finished my first scarf just from watching your video. This was great. Wish I was able to post a pic of how mine came out. The only thing was the beginning chains. That confused me so I did it the only way I knew how. It still came out fantastic. Thanks.
