The first horse I ever took riding lessons on (25 years ago) was a Fjord gelding named "Joppe" here in Germany. He had another good fjord horse friend with him nearly at all times. Joppe had a long mane, but it was perfectly split on each side in the middle, while his friend always had a short one (with hearts, stars, waves, and all sorts of things cut into them over the years. :D) - I loved how the light and dark colors were flowing when he was trotting in the fields or galopping. :) He was 15 years old and a total saint - I will never forget going Christmas rides with him.

I really appreciate watching you sizzor the horses mane so beautifully, and the reason why you do it. I was chastised on an a YT equestrian channel for having a mare with a roached mane, he stated that it was cruel and abusive. So it’s nice to see that people support your channel because it’s your reasons, your horses and it’s hardly any form of abuse. It’s beautifully artistic. ♥️

@pennylane428 - I'm here on an equestrian channel and I know next to nothing about horses - they have four legs, right? RU-vid is awash with ignorant jerks who pretend that their uneducated opinion is fact. It's best to ignore them. But it's more fun to engage them and call out their inflated egos.
@pennylane428

@@wickedcabinboy That’s really sweet of you. I’m thinking that you’re alluding to the man that has the equestrian channel that called out a woman (me) that has raised quarter horses since I was a kid. I believe he got a real thrill out of attacking me. But there’s no point in arguing with a narcissist. Xx

@@pennylane428 - I'm pretty certain I haven't seen that video. But I've seen plenty of putative experts posting their opinions, as I said, as if they were facts. That's a posting style guaranteed to offend unless the poster backs up their opinion with actual facts or evidence. Frankly I'm struggling to see how a roached mane is cruel. Nope, can't see it. You know that you know what you're doing. I wouldn't let that poster have any space in my head.

Well, who knew? Not me, that's for sure! When I saw the title of your video, my first thought was 'No! We never cut a horse's mane!' I had no idea that things were different for the Fjord pony - we don't have many of them in the UK as far as I'm aware. I suppose I always thought the standy uppy mane was natural! Now I know better, so thank you for educating me! I would imagine it takes a bit of practice and skill to get it right. I love the way the dorsal stripe runs right through the mane!

I am with you when it comes to bridlepaths. Very uncomfortable for the horse when the halter rubs against the stubbles of hair and the skin. Also more padding to protect the vertebrae from higher impact if the horse pulls when spooking for example. So glad I am not the only person thinking that way. Very interesting how you cut those manes!

Great video, I subscribed instantly. I have loved fjords since I was ten years old, and finally got my very own just four years ago after waiting 39 years. He is the best, and while I now has seven horses he is very much my favorite, even if I'm not supposed to have a favourite 😊 Back when I got him there was no instruction videos on yt, and as I live in southern France not really anyone to ask about how to clip his mane, I can now see that I need to give him a trim, as the top point is way to close to his ears. Thanks again for posting this video.

Great video with good tips. Question, why are some of your Fjords clipped and do you blanket them to stay warm? My Fjord sweats on any 50 degree (Fahrenheit) day or warmer just standing around.
@Horsewise01
@Horsewise01 7 месяцев назад
Hi! If they are clipped, I blanket them. Some of the fjords are partly body clipped, because if not, they sweat a lot during training. I think its better for them not to sweat that much on a daily basis, so I rather blanket them. . The youngsters (1-4 years) I prefer not to bodyclip, and let them play around without blankets. The 25 year old as well, hairy and happy, stays warm without any blanket. I don’t train the youngsters and the old guy so hard, and let them enjoy life with no blankets. When they wear naturally thick wintercoat, they will sweat even i 50 degree F, like your fjord 😊

Oh, I forgot to say, we do sometimes 'hog' a horse's mane (you call it roaching?), where it is shaved right down, but I think it's done less and less now. I would imagine it originated, for practical reasons, in a military context, or for horses that were working in harness every day, before they were superseded by the internal combustion engine.

You do a beautiful job of cutting their manes, and basically taken it to an art form. Very pretty! ❤ Too many people like to yank a horse's hair out to thin their mane if they think it is too thick, and I have always hated that practice. I love a thick, long mane on a horse, too, but now that you have stated that it can be harmful to the horse's neck over time, I am really wondering about some of these manes I am seeing on horses now - esp Gypsy Vanners. I think a lot of them have heavy, thick, 'double' manes that would easily fall to both sides - like the Fjords - but their owners do everything they can to grow those manes as long as they can, not cut them back. However, I think most tend to keep them braided a lot to protect the manes so they will grow long. I don't know if the braiding would help with somehow not making the mane so heavy on the neck or not.

@Horsewise01 7 месяцев назад

@@Horsewise01 I am glad to hear that your Gypsy Cob is doing well with it's neck and mane. I have seen some that I am really wondering about the health of the horse's neck long term, however. At the same time, if I were a horse, I might be a Gypsy Vanner or Fjord myself. I have thick hair that falls to my waist - about a double mane myself. My neck is bothering me. I'm going to check out those Fjord mohawk cuts to find just the right one for myself. Kidding - but tempting! 😂

I have to laugh about that person who said roaching a mane is cruel. When I first started riding at Clearbrook Stables the majority of the school horses had roached manes. It kept them neat and tidy, easy to clean for the grooms, didn't tangle fingers and reins and there wete too many (30+) for the 3 or 4 grooms to deal with. My Mom ran that stable with her soster during the 2nd world war because the owner was away at war. All the photos of them jumping and riding show horses with roached manes and they were fine, happy horses.

Hi ☺️ Many (not all) fjord horses have a lot of hair, and if the mane is long it becomes heavy. We dont have wild horses in Norway. The fjords were not registered and a more organised bred until late 1800, so I cant really answer your question properly. Horsebreeds often change a little over time, and how neavy mane the wild ancestors of todays fjords were I dont know really. I know the fjords appeared smaller, rougher, shorter in legs and neck around 100 years ago. This is based on old pictures I have seen. Thank you for your question! I’m sorry I could not give you an exact answer though.

I have made this kind of mane on different horses, not only fjords. The horses with thinner mane will stand up, but they need to be a little shorter 😊👍

And first you need to cut it very short, and go from there 😊👍

Why are some of the horses shaved in the front?
@Horsewise01
@Horsewise01 7 месяцев назад
Hi! 😊 Thank you for asking 👍 Some of the fjords are partly body clipped, because if not, they sweat a lot during training. I think its better for them not to sweat that much on a daily basis, so I rather blanket them. . The youngsters (1-4 years) I prefer not to bodyclip at all, and let them play around without blankets. The 25 year old as well, hairy and happy, stays warm without any blanket. I don’t train the youngsters and the old guy so hard, and let them enjoy life with no blankets. When they wear naturally thick wintercoat, they will sweat even i 50 degree F standing still.

I don’t like to bodyclip the horses back though. I like to keep their back (and kidkneys!) warm, and they don’t sweat a lot there Anyway ☺️👍
