When I was watching this the first time I actually put my hands forward to support the piece being cut off as you neared the end of the cut... see, you have me totally captivated. LOL

The first half of the ru-vid.comUgkx3ICSK6nSknaL_45CU2NmFSoXjarGMDiJ book is everything about wood: types, tools, finishes, setting up shop etc. The second half is all about doing projects for inside and outside of the home. The color pictures are helpful. After reading a dozen of these types of books, this is probably the best overall (layout, color photos, plans). Only detraction is that many of the projects use a table saw/router/planer, which are usually expensive and take up space, so the plans are less friendly to newcomers and the budget conscious. But I know I can use a drill, circular saw or a jigsaw to make the projects.

Certainly no arguing with a good steel cutting blade. I've had to cut a steel door off and only had a nice fine tooth carbide, yep, it did work, but the blade is pretty much sacrificial. Great tip, John.

This worked like a charm. I used my Ryobi +18v small saw with a high tooth carbide blade. Setup a guide fence, cut halfway through each time and the job I've put off for a year is done. I can see that a wrap around sweep at the bottom would be a good finish but it''s solid foam inside so there's no weakness in the door. Subscribed.

I do this for a living but commercial steel doors. I dont flip I do it all in one cut. Good video
@arbez101
@arbez101 4 года назад
This is not a commercial door, which, when cut would be re-cored and welded. On this type of door I suspect the "J " shaped edge of the steel skin not only held the skin tight to the wood bottom rail, but also added rigidity across the width of the door bottom. Now that you've cut it off, I think you've significantly increased the probability that the door skin will tend to delaminate, especially if not used gently, and if the (paint?) coating along the seam isn't maintained.

Another Einstein on the loose!!!! He did a simply good job without the blah blah bs as old school guy. You can rebuild that wood shit left over inside the end and add what you taking here. Any additional adhesive also can help.

Once the cut is made, and the factory sweep assembly is cut, how would you suggest finishing the bottom of the door before installing an aftermarket capped-over adjustable sweep/weatherstripping?

I would also like to see how you would do a narrowing of this door. Depending on the amount of such a cut, it may require taking off the skin, shortening some of the boards inside, and putting it all back together when a mere slicing off of one side is not possible or would render the door unhingeable.

It's funny how all of us have a metal door to cut down. I want to trim the door to the garage and raise the threshold so I can fit a rug to cut down on gunk that gets tracked into the house. Maybe now I will stop procrastinating... ...maybe...

I only have a 5.5" Circular saw and I haven't been about to find steel cutting blades for it so I brought a 100 tooth blade wood blade would that get the job done?
@TimHeagarty
@TimHeagarty 3 года назад
If it is carbide tipped then it should do just fine. That's what I just did and it worked perfectly. Be careful of the bits of metal that are going to fly off! Wear full eye protection and gloves to shield yourself from the millions of little metal chips.

Are there minimum saw specifications required to perform this cut? My DeWalt 18V DC390 documentation says it is not for cutting ferrous metals.
@dennis3449
@dennis3449 Год назад
I believe that is because of the speed of the blade. Typically a metal cutting saw turns much lower than a woodworking saw

What was your purpose of only cutting halfway on each side instead of all the way through with the first cut?
@weemeemoo
@weemeemoo 2 года назад
My guess: to go easier on the blade and avoid overheating, because there's a layer of steel on each side of the door, while the core inside is wood/foam/etc. Cutting through the whole door would mean going through two layers of steel at once. Edit: someone who's more experienced made a comment about this, too

Is it really necessary to cut halfway with two cuts instead of all the way through the door with one cut?
@WeeBeastie007
@WeeBeastie007 3 года назад
Doing it that way prevents splintering on the exit cut. It's important to do it this way when dealing with a metal door because if you blow out the metal sheathing on the other side of the door it is next to impossible to repair and make it look right again.
@klpittman1
@klpittman1 3 дня назад
With a circular saw the blade is attacking the work from bottom to top. The exit cut is therefore the top.
@billmellater
@billmellater 2 года назад
Now you have deal with the threshold, or move the hinges. I would cut the top.

if your locks align as they should with the existing door jam, its better to cut off the top.
@dennis3449
@dennis3449 Год назад
So then you have to lower the Jamb and reset the hinges and locks? I've been doing this for 40+ years now and have never seen anyone cut the top of the door off to get bottom clearance!

Why set up the fence twice and not just cut it once?
@IBuildItHome
@IBuildItHome 5 лет назад
Probably the best answer to that would be to ask if the last time you tried to rush something important, to save a few seconds, was the result better or worse? The blade is cutting through the steel skin, along with the wood underneath. It's better to cut metal with less of the blade sticking down, as it's less likely to hook it and pull it up.
@skiingslasher1991
@skiingslasher1991 5 лет назад
I Build It Home i see but why not just leave the fence and set the depth twice?
@IBuildItHome
@IBuildItHome 5 лет назад
Because the blade may hook on the top layer of steel that's already cut.
