Here's a pair of simple tricks I've learned to help when cutting glass.
The stick I used is about 1/8" thick. One of those big match sticks works well.
Cutting on a clean, flat surface helps.

Brief, simple and straight to the point. Scoring both sides is a game changer, worked an absolute treat and using half of a wooden clothes peg. Thanks a million.

Cutting new glass is one thing. Cutting old is another. Today I had to cut down 8 panes of 50 year old 4mm greenhouse glass. Really rippled stuff. I've never cut glass before today. 2 neighbours (one a builder) told me it couldn't be done, that it would shatter, splinter or cut jagged. I wasn't looking forward to it. I have a type of motor neurone disease. I have no strength in my fingers/hands/wrists and my hands shake like anything. I had to develop a way of holding the cutter with both hands, one hand controlling the angle, the other controlling the scoring pressure while keeping the cutter tight against my straight edge. Then I used your double scoring method (but snapped the glass off the edge of my bench rather than using your lollipop stick trick). I used 2 other tips I picked up from other youtubers. I oiled my cutter first and ran it lightly across my intended cut line without scoring. It leaves a neat trail of cutting oil where you're going to score. After scoring top and bottom I wetted both score lines with water before snapping off. I believe it stops the scores from 'healing'. You know what I ended up with? 8 perfectly cut pieces of glass from 8 panes of glass. 100% success rate. Zero breakages. To say I am amazed & ecstatic is the understatement of the year. A million thanks for your video.

I worked for a stained glass window company in Edmonton, Alberta, and learned how to cut curves in hammered and patterned glass. Now I can hardly cut a straight line in flat glass but this tip to cut both sides is just what I need for a job this Summer. Thank you.

Good job as usual! I used to cut glass in my family's hardware store and scoring the glass on one side "usually" worked but not always. We also had a brake, like a metal bending brake and sometimes the glass still broke incorrectly. I had never heard of scoring on both sides until now - that would have saved my dad quite a few sheets of messed up glass.

Great video. I have had limited success in cutting glass, so far I am 1-7 attempts. And a few times I tried to score on both sides, but due to my complete ineptness I have a really difficult time in scoring it exactly on both sides, and trying to keep the straight edge,....well,...straight during cutting is another challenge. I recently gave up trying to do it myself and took a piece of glass to my local glass shop (they have been in business for almost 30 years), and what they told me was counter to most of the advice in all these youtube video's. I was told you need to press quite hard (my glass was relatively thick), where as most of the video say to not press very hard at all. Thanks for sharing your tips, off to destroy a few more pieces of glass right now!!

Glad to see there were no outtakes on this one, John. ;-) I've also found cheap scribes to be the best tools but had never thought to cut from both sides to get a cleaner cut. I've tried using those wheels you can buy but with only around 60% success.

The wheel make a very definite cut that should break more reliably than a scratch, but it can be more difficult to do it cleanly.

My dad was a Glazer, I am a Glazer. Been doing it for 15 years. You never have to cut both sides unless the glass is thicker than 3/8 of an inch or if it’s laminated. Otherwise a pretty damn good tutorial man

@jbenny57 Год назад
I cut glass for 12 years. Never heard of scoring regular annealed on both sides. Absolutely unnecessary.
@alexg1778
@alexg1778 7 месяцев назад
@jbenny57 right... Does it cause any harm though? No. It takes a matter of seconds to do both sides and if you're not a professional it'll minimise the chances of it going wrong. If you've been doing it for years you clearly know what you're doing but someone who has little experience might want to do it this way to make sure.
@user-qq3vk1rn2d
@user-qq3vk1rn2d 6 месяцев назад
Doesn't matter if you are experienced or not. Totally unnecessary to score both sides of the glass unless it's laminated. I've been in the glass game for 42 years and have taught countless people how to cut safely and effectively. Handymen should just stick to what they know and not they think they know.

At the time of the corona virus when intellectual idiots like me have more time, it is an opportune moment to learn a few practical things. Thank you so much for these tips! I cant start at the momenet because all shops are shut down because of the epidemic but when I can get hold of a glass cutter and piece of plywood and cardboard Ill give it a try. I need to cut some panes for pictures. So good that you tube gives people the opportunity to learn practical things like this.

Great tutorial. Somehow I still managed to mess it up. I measured my lines several times on both sides, scored the first side, flipped it, scored the second side. Got my little piece of wood under the cut line and pressed down on both sides. The crack started from the bottom, went about half way up, I started to get excited that it was working, then the crack took a hard left, off my score line!
