I wanted to make a marquee in one image and fill it with a design from another so I dragged the selection to the image I wanted to clone and did what you said all worked well. Thanks

can somebody please help me for the love of God. I have a picture of a house and I'm trying to cut out just the house and I'm using the spin method that you're showing but it's not as easy as it is on yours. everytime I try to connect one point to the other going around the outside of the house it's showing like warped wines and it's cutting out the actual house I want to cut the house out of the white background I'm using Adobe Illustrator 10 this is so frustrating I'm getting so mad
+glyn whittington So, if you have multiple (non-connected) shapes you want to cut out simultaneously, you just need to make the shapes a compound path by selecting them all and either going to Object>Compound Path>Make, or by hitting Command 8; then create the clipping mask the same way I did in the video. Hi Donna! What you would need to do is create a rectangle behind your star shape. Then, with them both selected, go to Pathfinder>Minus Front (subtract). Then you can use your new shape to create the clipping mask the same way. :)
Very helpful, but what if your image has an area within the object that you would like to cut out as well, for example cutting out the outline of a head and also cutting out the eyes.
Good question! Probably the easiest thing to do would be to duplicate the image, and create a new cut out/clipping path for the second shape. If you need to cut out two separate shapes (that aren't touching) from the same image, though (like eyes, for instance), your best bet is to draw the shape and then turn them into a compound path (select both and go to Object>Compound Path>Make) before creating the clipping mask. Hopefully that makes sense.
the difference of using a program that will remove the background with illustrator is that you create the pathfinder at the same time that you remove the background? thank you!
when I drag a picture in art bord then it doesn't work. its show me 'the file could not be read due to an error' so what's the problem? how do I fix it?
Hey! good video! I am trying to cut out a shape from inside a pre cut shape, but all i'm left with is the piece that I'd have liked removed. this is the same despite clicking them in different orders first, how do i go about this? ( I'm trying to remove the neckline gap of a t shirt on a hanger)
Hi Lacey! To do that, you'd need to subtract the neckline gap shape from the outer shape before making the clipping mask. Once you have both overlapping objects traced (with both of them selected), you would go to Pathfinder>Minus Front. Once you've done that, you can create the clipping mask like normal using your new shape with the "hole" cut out. :)
