How to Cut Soft Jaws on CNC Lathe

A quick video of how I cut my soft jaws on our DMC DL30 CNC Lathe. Some of our newer machines have jaw cutting programs on the control. The older Fanucs do not, so I just hand write my g-code in MDI. Done thousands of these short little programs and it's all muscle memory now.
The code I used:
T1111
G96 S1000 M3
G0 X10.67 Z.1
G1 Z-1.29 F.012
U-.02 W.02
G0 Z.1
X10.7
G1 Z-1.29 F.008
U-.02 W.02
G0 X7.0
Z-1.3
G1 X10.7
U-.02 W.02
G0 Z.1
U.02 M5
Very simple piece of g-code with no unnecessary fluff. I always end my code in the position of the last cut so that if I have to cut more I know where I left off at.

That's the fastest hand programming I've ever seen!

Lol thanks I like to show to the new guys that come into the shop. After doing thousands of these it's like playing the piano. Except my instrument is a fancy CNC machine.

Thank you Very much. May i ask how to turn them if u need to hold a part with square angle?

Good stuff. Would you feel comfortable going full roughing on a part held like that with no tailstock?

Oh yea not even worried about it. My next video will be turning of that part complete from start to finish. No support.

How has that DMC been? I'm looking at buying either a DL2500YM or Genos 3000ELM. Seriously leaning towards the DMC.
@zalamachineshop
@zalamachineshop 3 года назад
For the price the DMC kicks ass. I use it everyday. Only major issue is that it is pretty weak drilling but other than that it does as well as my other more pricey lathes. I'm at 2010 programs total on it as of today. Overall I'm very happy with it.

@@zalamachineshop Thank you for your reply, long time fan of your videos here. I just got an email from the rep that DMC has upgrated the Z drive to have 2800lbs of thrust!!! Thats over 1k more than the Genos. Price on the two machines is within 1k of each other. Im losing sleep over here lol. If this was a LB series I would have wrote the check already. It seems the DMC is a step in the beef catagory, but the Genos does carry the OSP control. Havent used either of the controls so I would be a blank slate. Ive used Haas and my V1000 has a Mitts M70 which is actually a pretty easy control to run.... Decisions Decisions

Hey, if i want to cut soft jaws for D35mm part, do i put D33 part rear of the chuck and then take 2mm cut from the jaws? Thanks for your answer in advance. - Beginner machinist
@S_V_C
@S_V_C 4 года назад
You could put any size part into the rear end of the jaw, as long as the cut is the same size as the travel of the jaws when gripping it.

what is the size of chuck and the diamater of the part and isn't that pushing on the spindle bearings?
@zalamachineshop
@zalamachineshop 6 лет назад
The chuck is 12" (305mm) work piece is 10.7" OD (272mm) This is standard size for us. I've done much bigger in this machine before and the bearings are just fine.

I can barely see those letters enough to read them because they're green if they were like white they would stand out better. Correct?

Hi Marcin, Do you know a way how to prevent a program from dissapearing from MDI after execution on FANUC controller? (on HAAS it stays there until operator deletes it). My jaw cutting program would look like this: T1111 G96 S1000 M3 G0 X10.7 Z.1 G71 U2. R.02 G71 P10 Q20 U-.03 W.01 F.012 N10 G0 X10.7 G1 Z-1.29 F.008 N20 X7.0 M01 T1111 G96 S1200 M3 G0 X7. Z.1 G70 P10 Q20 M30 This way I can run finish pass only if skim cut is needed.

Correction of third line : G0 X7. Z.1
@zalamachineshop

No unfortunately I do not. I've tried to find a way to do that but whenever I make a mistake and press Reset I gotta retype the program every time. Our Mori has a MDI rewind option but not the Fanucs.

@@zalamachineshop On the new Fanuc HMI controller you can browse thru your MDI history page by page and run again whatever you like. A really useful solution

@jonjuke6849
@jonjuke6849 5 лет назад
Man those aren't perfectly cut ,where's your releif at the end of the jaws you can't hold a part right if it has a sharp corner at the location spot,did u look at your jaws most jobs that cause for precision especially in holding roundness would not hold up in jaws that has big gaps in the middle of each jaw ur using the wrong size jaws all I seen we're holes like swiss cheese😂😂be careful with that ,good luck

Good points but the jaws worked great. This exact set up I used for this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FQJ7vTdyq34.html I've rotated thousands of parts with my jaws. And fingers crossed so far so good. Thanks for the comment and please check out the other vid.
