How to Cycle a Fish Tank the EASY Way!

Cycling a new aquarium just means growing plants and beneficial bacteria that help purify the water from the toxic ammonia in your fish’s urine and poop. This process always takes forever, but since I already own a few tanks, here’s what I did to speed things up when cycling my daughter’s new tank.

I add an established filter, and some substrate from another tank, and feed lightly for a week or two, gradually increasing the amount over that time. If your filter is big enough, it'll contain enough bacteria that you can consider the tank cycled on the first day really. In 40+ years, I've actually cycled an aquarium twice, moving house, despite always having had between 8 and 20 running most of the time.

There seems to be a lot of anger in the comments about the decor. If you have watched her other videos you know she LOVES planted aquarims, this was for her daughter, it was a mix of fake decor and live plants. Although some things she did may not have been the smartest or easiest way to do it, she is very educated and knows a lot about fish. She is very careful about stuff and loves her fish, she is not a bad person for putting a few colorful decorations for her daughter to enjoy. She put some live plants in there to. And to all the people saying those fish were injected with dye, they aren't. Their geneticlly modified, breeded to make them colorful and hardy fish, it doesn't mean its right, but its not the fishies fault, they still need good homes. Also she has a longer more in depth video about how she set up this tank. Check it out before you judge her please.

I think the glow fish idea is from this popular version of glass fish that are manually injected with dyes. Glow fish are actually super healthy and don't have many of the issues regular fish do and are extremely eco friendly because they cannot possibly survive in the regular envirnment (everything will see and eat them). I wont say it's wrong because this is literally one of the most humanely bred domesicated species that both got bred for health and aesthetics. It's not as terrible as people think of it as but it's not perfect.

I would personally remove colored gravel! It degrades and it seeps into your water making your tank cloudy even after water change! Also gravel degrades over time and becomes sharp so fish (like corydoras) or snails that dwell on the bottom can develop sores! Sand is a much better option and doesn't need to be sifted through with a gravel vac as the debris stays on top! (From personal experience) my tank was always cloudy even after water changes so I removed the pink/purple gravel and replaced it with black instead but I was made aware by a friend who also has fish that the gravel can erode and become harmful to species that dwell on the bottom so I changed it out for sand and have had a much better tank since! (My corydoras also sift through the sand and keep it so much cleaner than the gravel!)

Also there's studies that show color preference and it always lands on more natural colors, reds, browns, ect I also find colored stuff really stresses my fish, which is why I moved to 100% natural tanks, no artificial colors

It’s just usually good practice to have 100% natural substrate and plants in a tank as it’s a whole ecosystem plus plants help to take out nitrates in the water, and plastic plants, usually can end up, causing tears in fish fins.

Most of the time, just transplanting a used sponge filter is enough as long as I don't overstock and overfeed. Aside from sponge filters, I sometimes use the other filter media like ceramic rings from established tanks, put them in a net bag, then place them in the new tank for a couple weeks to "seed" it.
@rat_dragon
@rat_dragon Год назад
Great point! And yes, you're absolutely right. A seeded sponge won't work for a tank that's bigger or more overstocked than it (a 5 gallon seeded sponge won't cycle a 10 gallon, or a 5 gallon seeded sponge with 5 shrimp won't cycle a 5 gallon with 50 shrimp.)

Instead of starving fish for days after getting them (because they could have eaten little before you got them too) you could just be responsible and cycle your tank completely before adding fish.
@Andreas-gh6is
@Andreas-gh6is Год назад
Not feeding the first day is a good idea. Even after a few weeks without fish, the biological media will take a couple of days, more like a week to double once or twice to meet the new demand.
@k9spot1
@k9spot1 Год назад
You literally can’t completely cycle a tank without fish because there’s no source of ammonia without the fish waste. Even if you add outside sources of ammonia the microbiome will need a while to adjust to sourcing their food from the new fish waste because of particle size differences, etcetera when you first add fish. The best way in my experience is to add just one or two fish at first (they did that with the snail) and then just add a few more at a time. That being said, it’s certainly not always possible to space out your fish ordering slowly and most new fish owners won’t realistically be willing to take the time. When you have to add more than one or two fish all at once, feeding them none or small amounts at first is a MUST to avoid a toxic spike in ammonia and nitrites. That being said, a full week of no food as suggested here is a long time for nearly all fish unless they can graze algae or something naturally in the tank. I would recommend waiting just a couple days with no food and then adding just VERY small amounts that they are sure to finish and digest very efficiently. Your tank can not be fully cycled without fish and even after adding fish it will still take normally take several months to really balance out. There will likely be spikes of diatoms (red looking algae), green algae, and filamentous algae as well over the first maybe 6 months if you’re doing things right and those will all pass with very minimal cleaning. The myth of being able to quickly cycle a tank before you get fish is something propagated by the industries that make algae killers and other interventative treatments.

@@k9spot1 I think you don't get the exponential growth thing about bacteria. Very little ammonium is needed to establish about half or even just a fourth of the capacity the tank will eventually need. That however takes a lot longer than the one or two redoublings still necessary, which again takes a few days.

And even then it takes a few weeks for the bacteria to develop.

An easy way is with Seachem Prime. It detoxifies the ammonia and nitrites so you can add fish on day 1 and you dont have to do counter productive water changes; you need the ammonia and nitrites in the water column to feed the bacteria.

Ring out a sponge in the aquarium then add new sponge instant cycle.
@rat_dragon
@rat_dragon Год назад
Exactly! This is called "seeding" and cycles in as little as 12 hours, sometimes up to a week (but that's still better than a month!)
@matthelm3795

Why not just add the old sponge like she did? Seems that would have more good bacteria than just rinsing it out. That's the way I've always done it. Just add very few fish and use prime and stability for a week. Never had any problems

@@matthelm3795because people need to find things to criticize. It's way easier and just as effective to plop the whole thing in there and turn it on.

Thank you I keep watching fish tank videos and the people don't talk about the cycles anymore. In the old days we were told to be careful and to cycle the tank for a rubicon anaerobic cycles to keep the fish healthy by providing a healthy environment.

Or if you already have tanks established, you can just do a water change on them and put it in your new tank
@jarekvance8455

Can you explain more about water changes, ? Doesn’t putting untreated water in your tank make it harmful for the fish?? Do you just have a whole separate tank full of chlorine nitrate free water to refill your tank?
@TheHogan316
@TheHogan316 Год назад
Water changes when cycling just remove the ammonia and the bacteria have nothing to feed on. I always fish in cycle and instead of water changes while cycling I use prime to detoxify the ammonia but keep it for the bacteria.

Have you tried using soil, sand and fresh plants? That way you can avoid the chemicals, water changes and stress. I have a tank set up using the method I mentioned above and it’s been effortless and stress free. Hope this helps 🐠 ❤
