Being injured can make you feel angry, alone, and as if things will never get better. We find that our patients tend to follow the five stages of grieving, which are denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. All of these emotions and stages are normal, but it's important not to get so caught up in it that it hinders your recovery. In this video, we share some of our tips that our patients find help them to deal with the mental side of injury.

My whole life revolves around sports; I am a gymnast, a wrestler, cross country, diver, martial arts, soccer, lacrosse, dance, and a big surfer. @@bardlemon5635 Last December (8 MONTHS ago) I dislocated my knee badly while I was simply walking in my house. It took over 30 minutes to reach the hospital as I felt like my bone was coming out of my knee. The doctor put it back into place, and I went to physical therapy for a while, but 8 months later I’m still scared to push myself because I’m nervous that if it could happen while I wasn’t doing anything, then it could definitely happen again when I’m running too hard or fast or something. Even though it wasn’t a very serious injury the mental part of the injury has stuck with me for a very long time and I don’t know what to do to not be afraid of running, ice skating, playing tennis, basketball, etc. do you have any tips?

Teenage Judoka here, I did calisthenics and practiced judo everyday, tracked my progress for some time. I suffered a possible ligament tear last week, I don't know yet as the MRI scan results aren't out yet, but I can't move my shoulder much and I cried twice these few days as I knew the recovery period could be long and I didn't want to accept especially because I'm addicted to upper body workouts. But I hope and I pray that I'll recover soon and I can overcome this ordeal. If you're reading this and you're injured, I hope you're comforted knowing there are many people going through the similar experience as you around the world.

fuck that doctor. idk where ur at now but i also had a career ending injury in football (i was crushed by a thousand pound hot tub). resulted in a fractured femur as the main injury and now i have a titanium rod and 2 screws (1 at my hip and 1 above my knee). I remember crying the day i got home bc i couldn’t even walk myself up the stairs. Was told I wouldn’t run for at least a few years. I’d cry myself to sleep every single night bc of the pain and bc of how much i hated being disabled. so what did i do? midnight. on crutches. i’d walk 1-3 miles. every other night. i was forced to walk myself to school and back during covid bc i was i. high school. within a month i was walking unsupported. i even went to my schools off brand football combine and ran the 40 with a partially broken leg ( i ran somewhere between a 4.7- and a 4.9). i ended up not being able to play football nonetheless but i still had to get my rocks off somehow. so wrestling. loved every second of it. got injured in that too. groin and knees. I was also a quarterback for a good majority of my football career so shoulder injuries started making their way into my life. fast forward to now. still battling every single one of these injuries if not more bc of the mental stuff. I say all that to say this. Fuck the doctors who doubt u. fuck the doctors who frankly are incompetent and don’t care enough to help their struggling patients. If not by faith, optimism, or any of that shit, the 2 things that will ALWAYS be the best motivation, are spite and rage. If I wasn’t so angry at myself and the world and the ppl who got me hurt I wouldn’t have pushed past my limits, and if I wasn’t as rageful as i am rn typing this, I wouldn’t be so determined to fix myself. Good luck. Don’t give up on ur dreams bc i’m not either and nobody should.

Thank you so much for this video. I too used to exercise every single day. But now I'm one week out of being hospitalized for blood clots in my lungs. I think I'm deep in the anger stage right now. I've spent the past week in bed pouting and groveling, especially when my boyfriend gets ready to go to the gym. It's so difficult to be patient, especially when our way of de-stressing or maintaining our mental health is with exercise. I like that you mentioned recognizing our small wins and writing them down. This is the first day i was able to leave the house, i had to go see my doctor. I was really scared to leave home because I was sure I'd get too short of breath and panic, but i did it. Good luck everyone who are watching this video, impatient with the healing process. We got this! 💪

I injured myself and got a hiatal hernia. Most horrible hernia you could get. It changes your life in so many ways. Chronic fatigue, bad breath, GERD, heart palpitations, slow digestion, stomach pain, nausea, you can’t eat foods you used to enjoy, constant pain, burning on your chest, can’t enjoy anything anymore. You have to take medication for life which can cause depression, dementia and osteoporosis. Worst part, there’s no recovery at least with other injuries there’s light at the end of the tunnel. Not here. Have been depressed for 4 months and probably the rest of my life. I don’t know what to do anymore, I feel like I ended my life

Bro how much time it takes to recover from wrist injury because i am on the same way you were thus injury stopped me to prqctice back handspring flip
@iker8010
@iker8010 3 года назад
@@pursuer477 Well depends on the wrist injury my man. In my case I had trouble especially with handstands, pushups and basically any exercise that involved my weight supported over my hand on a flat position. This was due to various injuries I had in the past from being a goalkeeper and boxing. I have wrist problems on and off but this one in particular took longer to go away (3 months or so). First thing to do is not to panic and start stretching the shit out of the wrist. Allow the wrist to rest for a while, even though the pain may appear to be rather mild. Ice helps initially and then heat does the job since it improves circulation to the wrist, which helps especially if it's a tendon or ligament issue. I'd advise to take a month or so off any type of upper body training, but don't let it discourage you since it's an opportunity to really the legs and the abs! If you want to carry on training upper body however, there's a few things that really helped for me: I did push ups/burpees on my knuckles which really helped to strengthen my wrist since it kept my wrist in a neutral position. Dips weren't an issue for the most part but i'd put a wrist brace to avoid extending the wrist too much (just in case). Pull ups weren't an issue for me so I repped them. And I also did a fair share of grip work: plate pinching, dead hangs from thick bars. I also worked my forearms through dumbbell wrist curls, hammer curls for the brachioradialis etc... Hope it helped.

@iker8010
@iker8010 3 года назад
@@leekenzo5922 Hello Lee. Honestly listen to your doctor in regards to how much time to need to rest those wrists, and with ligaments you have to be extra patient. As of now my wrist is okay, as long as I don't do stupid stuff it's fine. I train normally and box without issue. The only thing I can't do are exercises like flat palm push ups, handstands and such since after a few reps my wrist pain will flare up. It was tough at first but I accepted it, since then I just do exercises like push ups and burpees on my fists and it's great because I can pump as many reps without having a single worry (plus it strengthens the wrist overall). I know where you're at, you must be frustrated like I was. Give your wrists time to heal up buddy plus it's not the end of the world, there's plenty of things you can do (run, abs, legs etc). Just don't be an idiot like me and beat your wrists even more.

Thank you, this is very helpful. I’m not a sports person but I broke my tibia plateau six weeks ago while in Bangkok (I’ve been traveling as a digital nomad since 2021). My insurance forced me to return to my home country to recover - where I do not have my own home anymore. I feel like my identity has been snatched away and like I’m a burden to my friends who needed to take me in and need to help me with basically everything. I can see all the phases of grief I’ve gone through, the denial, the bargaining, the anger, and I think maybe I’ starting to get to acceptance but it’s been extremely rough. 10 days ago, I got a secondary injury from using my crutches - not sure exactly what it is but might be a torn pec muscle, it’s extremely painful and has reduced my mobility even more cause I can’t use my crutches now. Last weekend I crashed mentally. So many tears, so much sadness, …. Anyway, I’m hoping my orthopaedic specialist will allow me to start bearing weight in 12 days from now and start physio. In the mean time I try to do some easy chair exercises for seniors to keep my body somewhat active without taxing it too much. And I’ve just rented a place for myself for the next 6 months too. @@SportsInjuryPhysio just thought I’d come back and give you an update since it’s the end of June now. I wrote that first comment when I was at my lowest both physically and mentally. My orthopaedic specialist did end up giving me the green light to start weight bearing from the 7th of May. I was incredibly motivated to do my rehab exercises, every day I worked on my physical strength and flexibility for 40-60min. My progress was much faster than I had dared to hope for. And now I’m already at a point where I’m easily doing 4km walks without any walking aids. Still need to work a little bit more on my strength for even longer walks and on my flexibility (can bend my knee almost fully, but not yet, just a few more degrees until my heel hits my butt). Anyway, just thought I’d share it for anyone who needs to hear a positive story, it does get better!!

Thank you so much for this clip. So grateful to learn that I have missed the last bit about 'acceptance' so far - that I lacked faith in my body's capability in recuperation. I've been a beginner marathoner over a year, being so enthusiastic breaking my own records. This is my seventh week without running since my foot fracture, that I barely go outside as I walk with a limp. Suddenly in the last few days this feeling loomed over me that I am falling behind. Probably I needed someone to tell me that I should have a faith in my own recovery process that I will be able to run as much as I have done, if not better, in my own time. Probably this injury and recovery process is a part of my own race, as training for marathon has been for me. Thank you so much, sincerely!

I appreciate that you mention that one might have the kind of injury scans can’t see. It wasn’t until the twentieth doctor I consulted for a complicated back/chest/abdomen injury that he, a think-outside-of-the-box neurologist, said that “a big problem is that mri’s, ct scans, emg’s, and xrays don’t see everything” and affirmed, as you have, that the body does heal, but it can take time, especially with damaged nerves, maybe some years(6 years for me so far but I am about 70% healed). Earlier md’s were rushed, dismissive, and invalidating and acted like their tests are the gold standard, yes, a cause of anger in me. I have witnessed my present slipping-through-the-cracks of mainstream medicine predicament many times as a licensed massage therapist working in PT and pain clinics for 32 years as well as being a former dancer and dance teacher. I also appreciate your description of how one can proceed without a diagnosis. I have also been injured during this injury by 2 PT’s who didn’t have proper diagnoses and weren’t careful enough with me, but I didn’t totally blame them. A Trauma Neurosurgeon I connected with through Justanswer.com said it is very common for PT’s to not get proper diagnoses from doctors. If you’ve read this far, do you treat thoracic ligament injuries? I’m coming along with daily work on myself from all I know from my background and a little from past PT’s, and am about to try Peptide Therapy with hopes of speeding my recovery. I might be interested in consulting with you at some point in the future. Thank you so much for this video, and your video on meniscus injuries.

I had to sit out the baseball season my senior year of high school because of cubital tunnel syndrome in both arms. I had double nerve transposition surgery that summer after graduation. I started rehab but then my right hand went numb, I’ve had to wait it out for the last four months waiting for it to go away. After more nerve studies and MRI’s, they may have to go back in my arm to fix some scar tissue. I’ll have to restart the process all over again. I’ll miss my freshman season of college for sure, but I’m praying that this won’t effect my sophomore year. I’m a person that loves playing sports and being outdoors, so this has been really tough mentally. It’s hard to watch from the sideline for such a long period of time, watching everyone get better and bond with each other. I’m trying to keep my spirits up and power through but sometimes I feel hopeless. All I want to do is play baseball again. I know I’ll be back, I have big goals and I won’t be forced to give up. I will power through. I will fully recover.

I tore my rotator cuff a month ago and what I wasn't prepared for is how much it has affected my mental stability. I went from powerlifting 5 days a week to not at all. I feel hopeless like I'm losing all my muscle and I have no stable routine. Movement is what brings me joy and now it hurts just to tie my hair. I keep getting down on myself for making "too big a deal" of a minor injury. It helps to know that I'm not alone and other athletes struggle with this too.

Excellent presentation. Applicable to any trauma, not only sports injuries. I think the sooner one has acceptance of their situation the sooner recovery truly begins. I also think if the person can understand and accept that recovery is not a sprint but a marathon, sometmes several marathons and requires stamina and patience and a whole lot of loving gentleness with oneself. I, at age 80 have had a lot of experience with traumatic challenges to overcome and when I had a traumatic fall that broke my hip this experience helped me greatly. My athletic sport is hiking and backpacking. I have been on the trail for weeks sometime. With the broken hip I went from a very active, strong, independent, self sufficient woman o total dependence in the space of 3 heartbeats. Immediate plans as well as long range ones disappeared into the ether. As an emergency patient I had no information about the surgeon or the surgery nor the process for treatment and recovery. The choice I did have was to accept that my world had changed, to roll with the punches, go with the flow and educate myself. Unfortunately my excellent surgeon had a pessimistic nature and too often bet against me. However, the variety of therapists who treated me for 6 1/2 months were so up beat, skilled and supportive as well as patient listners when there were discouraging set backs and unexpected impediments such as adhesions. It's been 9 months this week. I have all of my prefall function even though form is still redeveloping. I am hiking up mountains again and soon will begin training to carry a back pack .I look forward to see where I am at physically in another 8 or 9 months and how successful I will have been in changing my bone quality. Periods of anger, low mood, discouragement, were of short duration and far spaced.

@@jyotijoshi8952 I'm so sorry to learn you are struggling too! It has been 2 yrs now and my ankle is perfectly fine! So there is hope. The bone healed quick and perfectly but the tendons, nerves and muscles involved is what took so long to heal. Once I got the boot off and started physical therapy I bought a calf and foot massager online. It was more money that I could afford but it was so worth it. It helped with the pain and the healing of all that was damaged. I still use it just because it feels so good! It took a couple of months for the pain to go away altogether once the boot came off. I had a lot of stiffness in the part of the foot that bends at the base of the leg. But the pain got less and less with everyday. I know it feels like it will never stop hurting but it will!!! Keeping you in prayer. All the best to you and your speedy recovery!

I’ve been out of my sport (basketball) for two months. Torn meniscus three weeks before nationals at a high level. Now I can barely run a mile. I’ve gained 20 lbs, lost muscle, lost skill, just generally feel like I’m no longer good at the sport. I feel untalented, fat, less than. I see posts of my team out at amusement parks, at hotels together for tournaments, I see the girl who replaced me standing right next to my team. And it all hurts

I just got myself into an active lifestyle for the first time in my life. For a few months I felt so much passion towards exercising, dancing, yoga, anything. I had an amazing exercise which I love and then something really small happened- I tried to work out on the same day I had a vaccine and during the first stretch my muscle became painful for the next few days, which got me to be emotionally scared of working out, as if it can damage my body. It's been a storm since then, now I try to workout again but I feel both paralyzing fear and also my muscle. It isn't painful anymore but I can feel it stronger than the other arm. Now I think I will go check it so I can focus on my emotional healing.

Then I did wall push ups as an alternative and then I think I pulled a nerve on my right arm, the pain goes from the side of my bicep and the it moves from the front (this is also mild). I’ve been crying for 3 days straight because I like exercising and it makes me feel good and look good. The only alternative I have now is walking but idk if it’ll do anything.

In March I made a great 6 week workout program, my lower back pain was gone, and things were moving in the right direction until a bad chiro cracked my neck incorrectly, giving me a type 2 strain. I was out but was looking forward to getting back. First day back after a month, I get awful plantar fasciitis. Could not walk without shoes on. That was April 31st. Finally getting better after two weeks in PT and doing all the workouts until one set of workouts caused a very old injury (carpal tunnel) to come back. I don't even know what to do. I'm trying so hard here and keep getting injured. I changed my diet and am down 5 pounds now but am loosing motivation in this despair I'm experiencing.

I’ve played sports every single day, and all of a sudden it feels like it gets ripped from you. I currently can walk, I got off crutches a week ago, but I can’t play sports. The mental effects of you having to watch others is terrible. Thank you for this advice, I need it.

I wasn't necessarily very active before getting into an awful car wreck that broke my leg but I run up and down stairs everyday, I hang with friends almost everyday even if it's just sitting around at least I could do so comfortably and not being able to even walk is driving me insane I wanna lash out I wanna punch a wall I wanna scream and cry I just turned 21 I had to cancel my 3 day trip to celebrate and I can't even drive a car anymore. My mental pain is becoming more than my physical and I'm ready to blow. I'm stuck like this for 3 months and even though it doesn't seem like long it feels like a lifetime and its barely been 2 weeks.
