This video is an amateur case study of a heat pump that failed, walking through a step by step electrical diagnostic procedure to determine the cause of failure. Few tools aside from a multimeter are needed to replicate this effort, but there are many causes for heat pump failure so the presentation is by definition incomplete. The discussion requires background knowledge and common sense both from the perspective of safety and estimation of personal competency.
The video I describe that went through the details of evaluating the capacitor and resistance of the start and run windings is listed below.

The information provided here is offered for free and in good faith, but there are no guarantees as to accuracy or safety. Always read widely and search for at least two sources for critical information. Note that uncaptured release of refrigerant gas is illegal and unethical. No DIY seminar on RU-vid can replicate the knowledge base and experience of a professional technician. DIY repair and diagnostic efforts are by definition risky and not all safety steps are shown here. If you decide to accept the risk of DIY repair, liability for any misadventure is on you.

Errata. 80A at 240 V is 19,200 Watts. With a smart meter on the home we can look at daily power consumption, and the day after our pump died our electric power consumption increased by about 40% above baseline. I expect it to stay at that until the new heat pump is installed. This will cost more than a few hundred extra dollars every month. In locations where ambient temp is usually above freezing, heat pumps are far more economical than resistance heaters or even natural gas. Efficiency slides backward for locations that get colder, although in those locations geothermal heat pumps offer a more effective option.

Was sorry to hear of the failure of the compressor. But like all things in this life, every thing must come to an end. Just want to tell you that: You are much appreciated, thank you for the teachings, and I personally, has learnt so much from you, this is the least that I can do or say. You take care Sir. I know for sure now that there are really some real good people in the world, and I myself is trying to labelled as such before i too come to an end, which is know is not too far away. God bless you SIR.

Sorry to hear about your compressor Dave. It sounds like it had a good life. Take care! 👍

Yes, the new unit is going in today. Your advice to simply swap the run cap rather than adding a dedicated start cap and potential relay was the trick to getting another few seasons out of the old pump. Thanks for stopping by, Terry!

@@spelunkerd I want to apologize for not seeing your video earlier, but as I've mentioned in the past RU-vid doesn't show any notifications for your channel and for a lot of other channels. You got a lot of years out of that compressor and you'll be happy with your new unit. On a side note, my most recent video shows where I'm releasing a Windows volumetric efficiency calculator to the public that I wrote. It has some features not seen in any VE calculator which may interest you. Have a great day and don't work too hard!

@@stuzman52 I'll go have a look. Likewise, I didn't see it, the algorithm has taken control of subscriber lists and feels it can do better, ha ha.

@@spelunkerd No problem Dave! As for their algorithm, I just don't get it. At one time in the past, I would get notifications through email. Then they dropped the email and went to notifications through a popup which doesn't work. Again, sorry for the delay in viewing your video.

The thing I find most interesting is the way this failure shows some behind the curtain design features of the ground and TNC-S neutral system. The way the AFCI breakers in unrelated circuits tripped is easy enough to shrug off. AFCI breakers trip when they see the characteristic frequency of voltage change in a corroded circuit, in this case on the ground side. But how do we explain why the 240 V external coil fan was slowly spinning, when the board should have it turned off? That PSC fan is not even fed with a neutral wire, and it has a single pole contactor so one pole is constantly hot. I'd be interested in any thoughts you guys have. Do you think there was a second point of failure, or do you think this could all be explained by magnetic interaction between one hot pole and fluctuating equipment ground?

Good video, but what your customers know that it's wise to denergize the capacitor before moving forward.

Excellent point. I addressed that in the other video, but it's always good to hammer in critical points regarding safety. Ground each side of the cap to each other, and also touch them to the equipment ground.
