I truly have to say, I'm an auto technician. I went to tech school back in 2009, just got into a dealership position about 3 years ago (a large gap of time where technology has truly picked up). What you Paul have done and continue to do as far as these videos with the classes, troubleshooting in the field, etc has been absolutely amazing to watch and learn from. You go so much deeper into diagnosing things, far more than anyone else who I have "picked brains" from in the field. I seriously cannot thank you enough for the amount of effort you put in for those like myself who want to truly become better. I am a big fan, I have subscribed and I will at some point soon be purchasing a copy of your works. You sir are awesome! Thank you!

I absolutely agree with all your comments !!! As an experienced technician in New Zealand doing diagnostic work for over 10 years using scopes I always get a little something from your videos. Today was the coil turn on oscillations and what actually produced them work respect to the 2ndry ignition. GOLD! I recommend your channel to other mechanics all the time. Thanks for all the effort you put into fighting the good fight :)

I was a ASE master tech from 1975 - 1985. I quit and started a remodeling/repair business for 35 years. I have continued to perform all my own repairs. Now I'm thinking of semi retiring and going back to working on cars part time. I have fully enjoyed all of your videos that will prep me to take my skills to greater levels. Thanks you for your time and effort to educate us.

ScannerDanner no prob. I attended courses at The School of Automotive Machinists (Sam Racing) in Houston Texas. One of the best engine builders in the world. So I learned to build and machine and study race engine theory. But over the past 10 yrs I have gotten alot of general Auto stuff. Alot of times it way more difficult to diagnose and figure out what's going on. But anyway I have a snap on Solus that I use and that's how I found you a couple years ago. You teach a difficult occupation very well sir. I may pick up your premium before long.

Amazingly informative presentation. Thank you so much! At 58 years old I still find this fascinating. I spent a couple thousand on a nice Pico rig about 20+ years ago and it's amazing how much you can learn just from diving in. I've been out of the professional auto repair business for 35 years but still do a lot of my own work. Unfortunately my rig was stolen years ago but watching this has kind of reignighted my curiosity. I may have to get another Pico to keep me out of trouble 😉. Danner, great job, thank you.

Case in point, I had a P0301. Cylinder 6 and 7 had no compression. Also, misfires aren't the only thing that can cause misfire codes. Misfire monitors, in my opinion, can only be trusted to tell you that the crankshaft slowed down. Bad ujoints, bad engine mounts etc can cause the crankshaft to slow down and can cause misfire codes. I've seen it myself.

@scannerdanner I have a capacitive pickup that is very similar to the one you use. I use it with my verus and a small handheld similar to this one. It will not show nearly as much detail with the spark event as the ones I have seen you use. Connections are correct. Do you think it is just because it may be a cheap knockoff? Thanks, justin

hello there.....I have a buick lesabre 1995 that has the same engine 3800 in my car and I am dealing with 2 misfire.....The number 4 cylinder ignition coil isn't firing at all and cylinder number 2 will sort of spark but not like consist like the rest of the ignition coils......First I tried swapping coils around but the problem didn't move at.....the coil that I thought it was bad (after switching them around) was good so my next step is the ignition coil module system.....After putting a new ignition coil control module in it I am still stuck with the same misfire.....I even put new spark plugs wires in it (since I change the spark plugs last year and forgot to get new plug wires) nothing change at all.....I even bought new ignition coil pack all three of them and the problem is still the same........I wanna know whats my next step to pin point the causes of 2 misfire that I'm trying to fix......thanks..... love your videos keep up the good work brother.

hi I've watched your videos about the aes wave scope. i'm thinking about getting it i know it cant do what the more expensive scopes can but will i be able to test most systems on a car that require a scope. and what else do you think i need along with this tool as a beginner trying to diagnose

Get this kit. It comes with a low amp probe, test leads and secondary ignition adapters including a COP wand uScope Master Kit 1-channel automotive scope goo.gl/MFe1Th

For an intermittent misfire what test(s) could be done with the scope? No one in my dealership can use the new mopar special tool : pico scope. I want to get proficient at scope usage

Mr Danner, good afternoon. how to diagnose misfire caused by spark plug gap? how to determine the correct spark plug gap when there is no possibility to change coil charging time, or any other parameter of the ignition system? Thanks in advance.

1:53 I can't figure out why some of the DIS ignition systems' waveform(s) look that way . Low firing lines falling that way I would truly appreciate an answer, ive been searching but havent found anything

Hi good video 🔥So fire line is compression, flat line is spark .If I have compression or spark in my car .Am I able to see that in a regular scanner tool?
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 6 лет назад
Firing line is not just compression but is affected by it. And no, you need a scope to see this stuff. Thanks for watching!

Pretty crazy to think how fast the computer has to work for it to calculate single cylinder misfires wile the crank is spinning at 800ish RPM! And in my experience they are pretty damn accurate, especially on the newer cars!

you mean, attempt to calculate. as with all confusers, they're only so great :))

Would a engine burning oil and making a rich condition cause a short kv firing line on a snap throttle
@joelserrano9105
@joelserrano9105 6 лет назад
Quick question about the spark line not increasing on the snap, if my sample rate is not enough could I have this issue on not having an spark line not increasing due to sampling rate?
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 6 лет назад
If you are using a time base where you are watching one ignition event, then no, most likely it is not a sample rate issue as to why you are not seeing what you want. This is because you are on such a small time base. It is long time bases where you will run into sampling issues.
