How to Diagnose and Replace Universal Joints 

This was a nice trip down memory lane. Years ago in college I was driving on the other side of Utah lake and heard a huge slamming and tearing sound. My rear U-Joint had broken and the drive line spun wildly out of control, tearing up anything in reach, including the floor of my YJ. Luckily I stopped quickly and removed it. Driving home in 4 wheel drive (essentially 2 wheel drive in the front only) I was able to make it to Advance Auto Parts where I bought a new U-Joint. Because this was before RU-vid I had to “figure out” how to get it apart and back together again. It just happened to be your exact method, only you were much more graceful in your execution. Looking forward to doing this on my new YJ here in a couple weeks!

subscribed, solid video. to the point and informative. at the end though, it would be good to mention checking the level of the atf in the transfer case, not the transmission.

Thanks to you my jeep is finally running smooth, just did replaced my rear axle U joint thanks to your video.. , and I also just watched your transmission mount replacement video while doing it... AND i also watched your rear main seal replacement video and did that!.. my two YJ's have finally had enough work done to get thru another summer. Excellent excellent video!!! I did hit the subscribe button indeed. You forgot to explain why you duct taped one end. Also, really glad you mentioned to grease the fitting once It's installed, because I was under the impression these things come pre greased.

I need to replace all the joints on my YJ95, but I am having problems finding the pieces... I found a guy but he said I need to disarm the yokes and compare the joints... he have a 1310 HD and 1330 HD , Spicer Brand... How can I know what size are the joints without disarm all the yokes? Thank you so much... I am not a mechanic neither but I love Jeeps and I love your channel :) regards from Mexico

Thanks for the video. When you say to mark the drive shaft so it goes back the same was because it's balanced, does it get balanced with the yoke? My yoke broke the other day so I need to buy a new one and replace the u joints, but obviously they aren't "matched". Should I be concerned with taking them to a shop for a balance or should I not worry about it unless I notice vibrations when I get it back on the road?

That u joint was bad! Good thing it was replaced.

Hey, I have a 93 yj and recently noticed a clanking noise from the rear driveshaft area when I'm coming to a stop. The u joints seems to not have any play. Any idea what it might be??

I didn't know you had to balance it, mine was already off and hanging down the u joint snapped off while driving.

check this out. changing drive shaft U joints on 96 Jeep Grand Cherokee but the yolk end the U joints seem very loose sliding in and out without having to pound them in. Mechanic said probably wrong yolk so I grabbed one off another 96 Grand Cherokee and it's the same situation. Any ideas?
