Today, we'll take apart a pretty straightforward knife, the Spyderco Caribbean, and see whether the construction is worth its' salt. The liners are LC200N. I am #NotABrilliantMan
Thank you for another fantastic review. I just received my Caribbean (serrated) sheepsfoot blade today. It dwarfs my SpydieChef. Thing is super sharp. Carry on fine sir and good luck with the move
**Cuts to a Spyderco meeting** PR Rep A: “So we need to send out T&E models, who are we going to send them to?” PR Rep B: “Well, I guess we need to send one to Nick Shabazz.” PR Rep A: “You mean the guy that wears a Batman mask and calls flipper tabs ‘pocket peckers’, really!?” Later that day: A package addressed to Nick Shabazz is shipped from Spyderco
Good timing. Just ordered one of these. Saw all the bad action comments. Was hoping you’re able to tune it. I may do some washer polishing and see if I can tune this like a pm2. My dragonfly h1 gets no respect. Replaced by the bugout for a running knife then shifted to boat and beach duty and now replaced again.
Iammightymeaty yup Lord knows him and Eric even more need the money to get a woman that doesn't look like shrek. You would think Eric would use some of those deep pockets to book a dermatologist. That acne and scars is nasty nasty lol
Hey bro. I have one of these and love it. No rust at all and spent alot of salt water time ect. I hear lc200n is a tough steel too. Edge retention and toughness to boot, while having a performance grind!! Cant beat it in my opinion. I would love to see a pm2 in this steel with lc200n liners as well
This is my favorite fishing knife. I just don’t have to worry about anything with it…no need to keep obsessively clean, sheepsfoot is a great shape on the boat, highly visible, easy to keep razor sharp and it’s substantial/sturdy so you can do some *work* with it if you need to.
Holy headgear Batman! I always assumed you were wearing a semi ridged mask held on by a strap. I didn't realize you have been using a full on rubber cowl just in case of reflections. I'm impressed. Bravo.
You could get a 'Bone tool'.. It's the same thing you're referring to. It's a poly/plastic prybar that is provided by manufacturers, and is very good at spreading the plastic trim inside a car without breaking any clips or such. Cheap, strong, and effective. Use it for knives too, works good.
I feel like a titanium frame lock makes more sense for a salt knife. The new spidiechefs have the ceramic detent. After any time submerged in water the washers need to be relived. In a compression lock it won’t fall shut like compression locks do.a frame lock is more forgiving to close even if it’s not fully lubricated.
I hope they all aren't difficult to open up. Seems like a model made to resist rust, would be good to have open easily; gotta replace the oil that gets washed out after dropping it in the river.
i bet you would be a great custom knife maker, If you had notion to be one. That Batman mask thing was funny. That's crazy funny we would have never known you had it on, unless the liners had been polished. i just find it funny you had it on all nonchalant, to continue tradition of keeping your face hidden. lol.
@@JohnFrumFromAmerica I understand that. However, having worked with a wide range of epoxy, FRN, Grivory, etc engineering polymers during the last 40 years, I guarantee that you will still alter the thread channels permanently. This will lead to reduced surface area contact between the threads and the G10 thread channels.
@@mazepa-slavaukrayini932 what's your advice for a screw that has too much thread lock on it. I am only saying to do it once if the manufacturer has put too much on. Not to be doing this every week.
@@JohnFrumFromAmerica The best thing to do, as well as the safest, is to simply torque the screw SLOWLY forward and backwards many times until it loosens itself.
Hello! Can you help me on which Spyderco to buy between Kapara and Caribbean? I only have one chance to buy a good quality folder, for general use. Is these the best overall at max 260$? Any suggestion would be much appriciated
Nick, ive always wondered this: you love pourpose build knives, knives with one very specific job, made for a small niche of people. However, you seem to dislike super thick hardcore knives made for the few people that need an extremely strong folder for some reason. What gives? Is there a difference between pourpose build knives for hard use and lets say.. a pourpose build diving folder?
Great question. For me, though, the main purpose of a knife is to cut. There are overbuilt and beefy knives that cut (e.g. Spyderco Shaman, Demko AD-15). Those are appealing and appreciated. What bothers me are heavy, overbuilt knives which are so heavy and overbuilt that they cease to be functional tools. That, to me, makes it not a "specialized tool", but a bad one. As they're not good pry-bars, either! So, that's the difference. A great knife, made for the water, is great. But a poor knife doesn't become OK just because it's made while shouting "HIGH SPEED LOW DRAG".
Nick, for the benefit of your loyal followers, please address the lovely gal you share your life with as BRIDE rather than "fiancee". BTW, "Bride" may be used well into past the 40th anniversary without penalty.
Nick, do something, please! You know.... Proper nomenclature. Unless you have a fiancée and a wife at this point. Which is fine with me. No judgement. Whatever makes you happy man!
Chris Allison That's how I feel about Rc bladeworks bought horrible rit and finish Southard scales, literally got them in hand try to put them on they didn't fit requested a refund Denied......
The pivot mechanism sucks on this knife. In addition, the first one I received was missing a bronze washer. Customer Service at Spyderco was and is a nightmare. But back to the mechanism- it’s virtually impossible to dial it in properly- it’s either wobbling around with blade play or it’s too tight. Poor design, and the first crappy knife I’ve experienced coming out of the Taiwan factory.
Thick rubber Batman mask? I'd pay money to see that! Also, when's the review of that? The mask, not the knife. I mean, I want to see the knife review, but the mask review reigns preeminent.
Maybe a troll but I will say there are a few posts on spyderco forums about early LC200n Mules being prone to rust. I’d imagine that was a fluke though and if I remember correctly was looked at by Sal and Co.
