In this video I will show you how I create diecast displays for just a few dollars. And they look great, just check out my other videos to see the finished project.
I found this video recently and went to Home Depot and then to Lowes to get the "ceiling stripping." No one had ever heard of it, and they couldn't find it in their system. Fortunately, a lady at Lowes led me to what may be what they are calling this now. It is listed in Lowes as tile board divider and comes in 8-foot lengths for $4 each. The end pieces, I think, rang up as $5 each. This is as of June 20, 2023. The actual Lowes item number is 11934 for the "PVC TLBRD DIVIDER WHT 8-FT" I bought, and the end piece was Lowes item number 11933 for the "PVC TLBRD END CAP WHT 8-FT" that I bought. I haven't done the project yet, but the design is similar to what he has in the video. I couldn't find the "No More Nails" tape either, but Gorilla tape has several double-sided tape options and I bought one of those. The Plano 5324 fixed, 24 compartment boxes he uses are available on Amazon, on sale for $8 each as I type this. I couldn't find them in stores anywhere yesterday. They also make adjustable compartment boxes, but I don't know how similar they are to the fixed ones he's using. I hope this information I gathered in my search yesterday helps people new to this video and these type of projects.
You are a hero! I tried looking this up a while ago and couldn't figure out what they were. Glad I came back. I found them with different numbers but looked them up by name and still found them very easily online.
you and the OP are the MVP's I've been searching for weeks it seems like for something to make displays that won't empty my wallet on one display. I'm off to Home Depot ..............ZOOM,, What did you use for the end cap pieces?
Yes I see many collectors now here on RU-vid with similar display set ups, it's great to see the revolution of cost-effective methods in getting the cars out of the boxes and onto the walls! Thank you and thanks to everyone else for making this hobby a great one full of shared ideas and input.
Thank you so much from Australia. Just finished about 3 thousand cars on the walls. I used screws instead of tape (a lot cheaper). The collection can now be seen instead of being cooped up in boxes for years. Cheers again mate.
Hi mate, I am in Australia too if you still have the display on your wall i would love to see pics, feel free to send me a message through my channel. Hope to hear from you soon.
Awesome help! My son started collecting at 3 years old (with the inheritance from grandpa of course) and he is 10 now so they are already out of control. Almost all are still in the package so they have been harder to store. This will be an awesome display for him to show off. Thanks!
I'm looking at his collection and im like "ok, ok, cool, hes got quite a few less than me, so this was probably easy for him." Camera turns at 5:08... Nevermind!
Thanks for the tutorial. Wife and I are living with her dad...looking for our own place, but until then my cars are in blister packs and in storage containers. I am looking to put these on plywood NOT a wall, so I'll use the same instructions, but just put them on wood instead. Thanks again!!!!
omg thank you . our 10 year old has been collecting for some time new . he is at last at the stage of not opening them and this is just great . we are up to over 10,000 cars now , I think we could cover every wall in his small room .
I am quickly running out of room on my walls using the pushpin method. I will have to get over the fact that all the card won't be displayed, but this is going to save a ton of space and looks great. Thanks for the how-to. P.S. That is an insane collection! I have decided to just get Mustangs, so I don't have to add-on too my house.
For new people reading this, you can set the bottom of the plastic bubble on the lower card's top edge and only obscure the card below the bubble. The main card is still displayed, but, of course, you don't save much space but you do lose the need for pins. I have my few Supers displayed like this in one of the rows.
Hi I am from Argentina, Great idea I will put into practice. I started collecting them only a month ago. I hope to get the organizer at Walmart. Greetings from Cordoba, Argentina.
Dude just saw your site cool awesome room you doing I just ordered them they should be in this week I've been looking and looking for a cheap way to do it and this is going to work out great I appreciate it the hot wheel man and by the way I just scored on a good deal 70 80s and 90s Hot Wheels bought six tubs for $65 at a yard sale
the ceiling strapping stuff can be found at Home Depot , Rona. Home Hardware, most hardware stores and lumber yards www.homedepot.ca/product/exceliner-divider-bar-pvc-white-moulding-8-ft-/1000154247 it is called PVC divider moulding
"Thats what she said" LOL Wackity Smackity DooOOO Awesome ideas, I believe the pieces you're using to mount the cards are FRP (fiberglass reinforced plastic) butt connectors. You'll see it used in kitchens at fast food places and restaurants etc as the walls due to it being easy to clean. I'm in the process of hanging mine up as well. I bought 1''x'2''x8' boards and will space them out to be able to display the entire card. Your idea is ingenious, though and I may take advantage of it on more common ones i have in numbers. Especially when you've got as many as you do and become spatially challenged.
speshulk007 Thanks for the info, and insight into how you display your collection. Its always cool to hear and see others collections and how they are displayed - much better that way then in boxes!
I love this idea , I used molding to hang mine , did top half a wall , everyone who came in the man cave would stand and scan over all the cars , going to redo it to full wall , I have more cars now, also like the plano cases just cant find em by me don't need em yet anyway
you are a monster in the hotwheels community...Thanks for the tips on displaying cars. I will be doing this shortly and I will put the video up on my channel...Thanks again. Keep Prowlin'.
John Ingrum Thank you very much! I appreciate the sub, views, and your comments! I am looking forward to seeing what you have on your upcoming channel.
just recently found your channel and WOW!!! i didn’t look at the time stamp when i started video but i’m like he seems different in this video… thanks for making great content. you’ve clearly been at it for awhile now
Thanks for checking out my channel and some of my older videos! Yes this has been a passion project and hobby for most of my life, and about 16 years on RU-vid!
Bought last night, Home Depot doesn't call them "ceiling strips", they are "home mouldings" in the crown molding dept. Funny scene last night, I had 4 Associates watching my phone and the video, lots of Hot Wheels stories shared :)
+Colin OBrien That is awesome! I can imagine the hilarity in the situation! But I'm glad you found these elusive "home moldings" LOL. Thanks for the comment, it made me laugh!
For those interested you can also buy a frame cork board or something similar and you can buy those strips in Black and you can put them on a 4 x 4 display. The only reason I say this because I purchased some Hot Wheels and they were in the display and it was in a frame type Square with the same strips in it just saying this because some folks might not want to mess up their walls and you can display them that way. Hopefully that came out right and everyone understands it. It's a great way to display a group of cars also for certain collectors. Thanks I hope that helped someone. @ wtffor
Hello fellow collector, I feel your pain on not being able to acquire the Plano cases even after 2 years of trying to find them. I don't know what I would do without mine, I have become so reliant on the cases for my collection. If you would like I would be willing to buy you them and mail them to you by the case, since I can get them in quantities of 6 already boxed from the factory. One box would include 6 Plano cases inside. Depending on where you live, shipping could be in the $30 to $40
Just to clear this up, this is not "ceiling strap" as it is called. What he is using is actually in the panelling section usually and it is used on FRP Panelling. The one is a butt connector for joining 2 pieces of panelling to somewhat hide the seam and the other is to finish off the edge.
The title mentioned diecast. Thought it was going to show displays for 1/24 scale. I build models and was looking for such. Great collection buddy and cases, Thanks for sharing! ....Bob
@gitrdone1975 Try using Carpenters's all-purpose glue. I use it on my ceiling strips to hold cars and it hasn't let go. Maybe also try running a dehumidifier for a couple days before and during the gluing part, in case you have high humidity.
You can use the window weather stripping for inside and it's got a sticky strip on it and all you do is put it up there where you going to put your cars and then put the center strip in it and there you go slide your cars down in no double-sided tape needed
That's the way I display my cars. Some body showed me that about 15 years ago. I use staples to mount strips. I also use thin pieces of wood to mount them to.
Couldn't find any No-Nails Tape at Lowes, but they had some 3M double-sided outdoor tape, said it holds 20lbs (the other 3M tapes were 5 lb.), gave it a shot and seems to hold well (so far - hopefully they won't be on the floor in the morning!). I cleaned the strips with brake parts cleaner to de-grease them and help the tape to have a clean surface to stick to, and then used a flat-bladed screwdriver to press on the strips where I put tape pieces to ensure max. adhesion, after first...
If ur from the uk and are wanting to do this try looking for (White Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) L-shaped Finishing profile, (L)1m (W)14mm) At B&Q, it’s the closest thing I could find and it works the same. Hope this helps 😄
What up man! I'm a straight newbie! I've always had Hot Wheels but never collected them, wanted a room covered in them when I was a kid(I still do). I have a son now that is a year old and I just recently started collecting a few weeks ago lol (have to start somewhere right...?) want my son's room like bed room with cars everywhere. Anyways... you videos are awsome and are helping me set up and look for the right cars! Thank you again!
I bought a “version” of this stuff at Home Depot. The kind i bought has the opening on just one side, so u have to double up, sort of. But it works. And im using quarter inch osb plywood.
Similar to some of the other comments, I didn't find anything called 'ceiling strapping', but, Lowes has these, their price tag calls it tile moulding, and their website calls it wall panel moulding - it appears to be moulding for fiberglass reinforced wall paneling (FRP wall panels) for showers and tubs, made by a company called Crane Composites. Search the Lowe's site for "Sequentia" - they had them in 8 ft strips, white and almond, I printed the page off Lowe's site to show someone there.
Every Walmart has them with the fishing gear. I've purchased them in every store I've been in. They carry various types with either fixed dividers like yours, Or with re locate able plastic dividers. I actually prefer those, because I always have a few stray pieces that won't fit in the fixed dividers. $5.46.
Hi, im a new collector in Australia love your video have used your concept, brillant better than tripping over them on floor. My grandkids are impressed. The only sad part is we don't get the variety of cars, but still fun the chase.thanx and cheers, hot collector.
Only works if you have a big wall area. For small places, get hold of old wine boxes and create a shelving system. For packaged cars, simply bang nails into doors or use thumbtacks for less hard surfaces.
caution and don't cut yourself - probably easier to just push a blade down through the strips than to try and slice through them. Nice vid, great collection, thanks for sharing the tips!
I did a project like this 8-10 years using wood. The problem I experienced was the cards at the bottom of each row had the weight of all the cards above it resting on it, That resulted in bent cards on the bottom of each card or dented plastic bubble. Each card has the weight of all cards above it resting on it. I tried using a thumb tack every 5th car to reduce weight but the thumb tack still put a dent in the hook part of the card. Great way to display but card damage. I am now a Opener. Happy Hunting.
It's true, some of my cards had this happen too. Most were okay due to the tracks being tight enough to hold the cars up with friction along both side edges, thereby transferring the weight of the stacked cars to the tracks on the walls. I don't use this method for display currently.
Sequentia Vinyl Molding Division Bar is currently unavailable on Amazon. Here in Dallas, Lowes has it in stock, but hardwarestoresonline.com is almost half of Lowes price. 10 - 8' sticks with shipping to me, is still about $4+/- less than Lowes if price is more important and you can wait for shipping.
I'm not hot on the idea of sticking it directly to the wall. makes it kind of hard if you need to move. I like the idea of painting a 4 x 8 (or 4 x 4 for more portability) sheet of Luan and mounting it with screws. small screw holes will be much easier to patch come moving time.
positioning and pressing the strips into place by hand. They had strips with a very narrow slot, it looks to me like the deeper/wider (about 1/4") slot works great and the narrow one would have been a problem. The strips are slightly longer than 8 feet, if you cut them in half and want identical lengths, measure & divide by two. Cut it at 4ft, and you'll have one strip longer than the other. The strips might be more easily cut by a utility knife than scissors - takes some force, so exercise
