Horticulturist, Byron Martin, takes a 40 year-old Staghorn Fern (Platycerium andinum), and cuts behind the sterile frond and wraps it onto a cedar board and still comes out with a beautiful specimen.

Thanks! We've got 2 huge staghorn ferns that need dividing. One is in the crotch of a maple tree that has died and we wanted to get it out of there and do something with it but it is HUGE!

If you ever decide to remake this video, can you please actually SHOW where you are cutting? You slipped your hand in somewhere , saying that there were several parts to it, but as a novice, I have no idea what to look for, where I COULD cut. Then your body covered the rest of the process. So I am still unsure of where it would be safe to grip it while you pulled the piece off.

I noticed that your moss looked dry. I just mounted mine with moistened moss. Should I take it off and redo with dry moss? Thanks for a great video.

Hi, I'm having trouble finding an answer for this, but do staghorn ferns need soil when they're mounted? I have tried to mount a few that have been growing in pots, and they seem to suffer as soon as they're removed from their soil and pots. I really want to be able to grow and collect them, but it's heartbreaking to see them just deteriorate after mounting

They need some kind of substrate behind the sterile frond plates to hold water and for the roots to grow into. We use sphagnum moss.

Try searching on a website, Davesgarden.com. They might be able to recommend a vendor who currently carries the item for sale and can ship to Europe or France.

Hi, My mum has a stag horn that has naturally propagated on her lime tree, it's only about 6 inches around at the moment, and it's only about 4 inches above the ground. Is there a way of removing and re-mounting without damaging the fern or the tree?
@LogeesPlants

Simple just scrape it off keeping the sterile fronds as intact as possible and mount it using sphagnum moss placed behind the sterile fronds or shield. The fern doesn’t harm the tree.
