Listen I've seen a lot of solder joints in the vertical and nothing but straight dog shit. I've done a few shitty ones and here are tricks you should watch for.
1. as your flux becomes ready and hot wipe it before you solder.
2. focus your heat to the top. this had water in the other side hence why it took a little longer.
