How To Do Brakes | Pads and Rotors | 2018 Hyundai Elantra | Front & Rear

Welcome back to the channel
In this weeks video I show you how to replace pads and rotors on a 2018 Hyundai Elantra. In the video I show you exactly the process that I do whenever working on any of my customers cars. From grinding the hubs and calliper brackets to prepping and painting them to put them back into service as well as give you a brief description of why it is I choose coated rotors and first line pads as opposed to the cheaper stuff. I also show you how to retract the rear calliper which also is used on this application as the handbrake or emergency brake. Wow bro thanks man. When installing my front pads it did not originally have the spring hardware installed. So replacing my pads/rotors for the first time myself yesterday and I reinstalled the hardware the same way I found it. I figured the springs were only on some other models of cars. My front rotors/rims get so so hot while driving and maybe it’s because I’m missing that spring. Which separates the pads while cruising. I watched this video to see how to remove the rear emergency brake. I’m happy I watched the whole video instead! Thanks again bro!

It may be a possibility that some models don't come with the Springs but if you're having an issue where it's heating up excessively it may be possible that you do need the springs. The best way to find that out would be to talk to the dealership parts department and ask them what Hardware comes with the pads. Sometimes if they're nice parts department they'll send you a picture of a parts diagram breakdown which sometimes will show you exactly what parts are needed. If you're seeing any sort of Bluing on the rotor is getting way too hot. I'm glad you found the video useful.

I am doing the same on a 2018 Hyundai sonata LE. After watching your video very carefully and inspecting the system on my car, I noticed that there are no 17mm bolts and the emergency brake spring is non existent. Great video. Very thorough! Thanks. I'll be following it when I do the job.

First time seeing a brake job that doesn't use loctite on the caliper bracket bolts. Is there a reason for that?

Yes, it's not required. There are certain applications where it is a requirement. For most auto manufacturers out there it is not.

Thanks for the information. How do you depress the calliper if you’re just replacing the pads not rotors? The screw driver would damage the rotor, wouldn’t it?

You can still rest your screwdriver up against the rotor just be careful and don't put too much pressure as you can scrape or damage the rotor surface. I'm not 100% sure if you can sneak the screwdriver between the pad backing and caliper but a lot of times if you can't get the screwdriver in and you're afraid of damaging the rotor as long as your caliper is in decent shape and free you can move it by hand without the screwdriver.

Thanks so much for the great video! Any way you could link to some of the tools? Like the wire wheel and the others to get the rust and scale off? And to the piston depressor tools? Amateur mechanic and want to be sure I get all the right stuff!!

at 31:04, you had put the rear brake pad wear indicator facing down and on the inside. For the front brakes at 28:20, you had placed it facing up and on the inside. Does this matter when replacing them? In order words if I were to put the rear brake pad wear indicator facing up, would that cause any issues? Thanks!

Hey Austin, the breaker indicator position is usually on the bottom of the pad on the inner pad. However if it is put on the top side by accident most cases it doesn't make a difference. Usually I just copy whatever it is that I see assuming that it is from the dealer. I have mixed them up in the past and it doesn't really make a difference so don't be concerned if you have. Hey victor, thank you for the comment. Unfortunately I don't remember or have the part numbers for the pad. The best thing to do is to look them up online. A good website for reference is RockAuto also if you're in the states for purchasing as well. If you're in Canada well shipping costs are way too expensive. Good luck my friend I hope this helps.

On that rear brake lower bolt at 32:15 minutes, what size Crows Foot is that? I need to get one from my local parts store. Thanks!

Hey thanks for the compliment. I really do appreciate it. As for what I did in the video I unfortunately don't remember but whenever I do a brake job I use a synthetic brake grease. As for sealant I use "the right stuff". It is a black silicone by Permatex. I also use anti-seize usually copper type and white lithium grease. I hope that helps answer your question. I'm glad I was able to answer your question. As for your Hyundai Ioniq oh, it will most likely have the same setup. I'm not sure 100% because I haven't worked on it. The best place to find that information out would be Hyundai itself you can ask them to compare part numbers or you can go online to search up is the part numbers for your pads and rotors would be the same as other Hyundai vehicles. I don't think it is different but I could be wrong.

When I change my front brake pads on my 2018 Hyundai Sonata, will I have to “bleed” the brakes?

You don't necessarily have to bleed your brakes every time you service them. It's not a bad idea if you're capable of doing it. The best place to find out whether you need to as recommended by the manufacture is to look in the owners manual. If you have a friend who has a shop and a brake fluid water content tester that is the absolute best way to find out. I hope that helps you. Will this apply to a 2019 Elantra sel?

Hello my friend. I don't know whether the torque specifications will apply to your elantra. But the same process of doing brakes and how I do them with painting the caliper brackets greasing and anti-seizing will apply to pretty much any car. However you can take your VIN number to your local dealerships and they will be able to most times tell you what the torque specifications are. If the brakes are disc front and rear I'm pretty sure the process will be pretty close to the same if not exactly the same. Not sure 100% however. Good luck my friend.

The one thing that I did not see was using brake cleaner on the rotors. Great video though.

The reason you didn't see me is brake clean on the rotors is because they are coated rotors. With coated rotors you should never use brake clean on them.
