How To Do Honda Civic Tune Up

I show how to do a tune up on a 2000 Honda Civic. In this video, I change the spark plugs, distributor cap, rotor, spark plug wires, and air filter. Doing a tune up takes less than 30 minutes, and can make your car run better, and improve your gas mileage. And it's pretty easy to do it yourself.

Fuel filter to, very easy, right on the firewall ! I did a full tune up, plugs, cap / rotor, cleaned K & N air filter, new PCV, gear oil change every 50,000 km, synthetic oil changes every 6,000 km. Bought new a 1997 Honda Civic Si coupe Aug. 1997 owned to Nov. 2008 had 685,000 km on it, original starter and clutch alternator at 400,000 km and it still ran like a charm when I sold it.

Charles Crocitto, they come pre-gapped. You can check them. There are warnings about gapping fine wire plugs like platinum and iridium.

Both can make a huge difference depending the condition of the plugs and wires you have installed. Plugs are more likely to have an impact as they wear out faster than the wires. The wires can be damaged or just degrade over time.

Does the engine sound worse than it did before he changed the plugs? The distributor and rotor wear out over time due to the arcing, the same way the spark plugs wear out. So it's a good idea to replace them at the same time.

The cap and rotor are both BWD. I just went with what was recommended by the auto parts store on those. The plugs are NGK platinum tip, and the wires are also NGK.

my first car and i bought all this, glad to see I'm doing it right haha I'm planning on changing transmission fluid and getting an oil change, the previous owner never kept up with routine tune ups or oil changes, luckily it still runs. also i put in a cold air intake as opposed to a new filter.

I wouldn't have even tried without your video. For some reason, on my 1988 Civic Wagovan, I hit a wall with the rotor. I got the screw off (had to gently move it into position by turning the motor -tapping the ignition) but it wouldn't slide off and I didn't want to force it. Otherwise everything according to your directions. Thanks for doing this!

You generally don't need to replace the fuel filter on these newer Honda's unless it's giving you troubles. I replaced mine at about 200,000 miles, just because. I wish I had made a video of it. Not sure if the 96 has the same type as my 2000.But it was a little more involved than the old type with a couple hose clamps. I know there are some videos out there for it.

You half answered the question. Because the PCV valve is so hard to get to being buried underneath the car behind the oil filter. I usually have my oil changed at a shop. Usually the Honda shop. I don't have a rack and it's tough working under the car without one. I asked them to change the valve when they changed the oil and was told it generally doesn't need to be replaced unless it is giving you problems.

I bought the parts at my local auto parts store (Advanced Auto). I didn't list specific parts as the parts for your car might be slightly different than my car. But the process of installing them will likely be the same, or similar.
@RJTheBikeGuy
@RJTheBikeGuy 11 лет назад
Then I before doing the cap and rotor, I would solve the issue you have now. It sounds like something went wrong. Did you do it how I did it in the video? One plug at a time. Only unplugging the wire from the plug? Or were all the wires removed? Is it possible the wires were connected to the wrong places? Did you install the correct plugs? Are all the plugs screwed in to the correct tightness?
@RJTheBikeGuy
@RJTheBikeGuy 11 лет назад
It helps keep air and moisture away from the contact of the wire and the spark plugs to help eliminate arcing and corrosion.

@RJTheBikeGuy
@RJTheBikeGuy 11 лет назад
No, you shouldn't mess up the timing at all by replacing the cap/rotor. You can pickup a Haynes or Chilton's guide for your particular vehicle for any minor differences. But this stuff really is pretty simple.
@RJTheBikeGuy
@RJTheBikeGuy 11 лет назад
I do it the way I do it in the video to make sure I get them back on in the same order they came off. If you get them plugged in to the wrongs spots on the distributor cap. the engine will not run correctly. But you can put the wires on any time you like, just as long as you get them plugged into the correct locations.
@RJTheBikeGuy
@RJTheBikeGuy 11 лет назад
It's more how long they last. The copper wear out faster than the platinum and the platlnum wear out faster than the iridium. The constant arching slowly burns the metal away and the gap increases. As the gap increases, performance slowly decreases. So the Iridium stays nearer the optimum gap longer than the platinum which outlasts the copper.
@PilotObi

So after changing the wires on the car, you dont put the distributor cap back on? Or is it only because you baught NKG Wires and they are aftermarket?

I have a '92 Accord and when changing the rotor I could not get the old one off. I haven't found any screws on it. I'm looking at my new one and I don't see where a screw would go. It looks exactly like the one in it. Do you have any ideas as to how it may be secured or perhaps how to get it unstuck? I don't want to break anything prying on it.

There is a screw holding it on you have to reconnect the battery and crank the car on so the rotor spins where the Gap is and you can see the screw but don't start the car all the way just crank it until it lines up and you can see the screw as the rotor turns and then unscrew it it's a Phillips head I just seen the video

Messing with the ECU goes beyond the scope of this video. But on most Hondas, it is located under the kickplate on the passenger side. You can try resetting it by disconnecting your battery for 10 minutes. But it could be you have other issues, and the ECU is just trying to compensate for those issues.

whats the purpose of the grease used in the spark plug wires?
@matjdm
@matjdm 12 лет назад
A little advice, when you remove your wires, before removing the sparksplugs, putt a airgun on, sometimes it have dust and crap on the sparkholes, with that, thoses crap don't go on the engine. it's also better to use a torque wrench with the honda torque sheet, and you need to mesure the gape of the plug too and check the honda manual for see if the gape is correct or if you need to change it. don't forget to look if it's a ingle-use hollow or folded metal washer, somes have no washer...

@aodhanof90
@aodhanof90 12 лет назад
@skaterman1q2 it would apply to all civic engines that have a distributor- however a full service should include an oil & filter change, fuel filter change and the cabin air filter if equipped... depending on mileage, for auto trans a drain and fill of HONDA ATF-Z1 (3 qts.?). that's on top of what he did. If the Civic is newer & has coil on plug ignition, skip the new wires, rotor, rotor cap & gasket as they are not used.

@RJTheBikeGuy
@RJTheBikeGuy 11 лет назад
Because they are a Japanese brand and Honda uses them in their cars. The cars are designed to work best with the NGKs. American brand spark plugs are fine, but are different. They work great in American cars. They are what American car companies use and the cars are tuned to work with them.
@RJTheBikeGuy
@RJTheBikeGuy 11 лет назад
Ouch! The spark plug side is generally pretty obvious on Hondas, because the wires are of different lengths. My guess is you have the wires connected in the wrong spots on the distributor cap side. Do a google search like "2000 Honda Civic firing order diagram". Change it to YOUR year and model. Look at various diagrams and compare them to how you have your wires hooked up. Notice the caps often have #1 marked. Notice also they don't fire 1 2 3 4. More like 2 1 3 4.
@RJTheBikeGuy
@RJTheBikeGuy 11 лет назад
If you are comfortable doing it, and have the tools, do it yourself. It's really not hard. Get the parts at the local auto parts store. You just have to be aware that sometimes bad things happen. Generally things go smoothly though.
@RJTheBikeGuy
@RJTheBikeGuy 11 лет назад
I would stick with regular oil. Especially on an older car. The two are very different. Synthetic oil can leak through places where regular oil wouldn't.
@MikeKollin
@MikeKollin Год назад
Is Anti Seize the same as Dialectic Grease? And I believe you put the grease around the threads. Then put it in the tip of the spark plug wire like you show! Thanks for the video....
@RJTheBikeGuy
@RJTheBikeGuy 11 лет назад
It very well could. Take your car to the local autoparts store and have them look up the code for the check engine light. It could be something simple like you didn't tighten the gas cap enough. Or it could be something VERY serious. Do this ASAP. Then evaluate how bad it is. You want to drive the car only enough to get the code checked and find out how bad it is. If it isn't bad enough that you are going to junk the car, buy the tuneup parts. I hope you have at least changed the oil regularly.
