Whoo Whoo! This is great! I’ve been teaching Zumba for years and I really enjoyed this video! Great information and a delightful delivery! My first Zumba class was hysterical! My sister dragged me in (because I wasn’t a group fitness kind of girl...) and we tried to hide in the back. I was such a mess-did everything except fall down. I was working at such a high intensity level that halfway through class I thought I was going to have a heart attack. Thankfully that didn’t happen. We made it through class, laughing at ourselves and having a WONDERFUL TIME! My instructor was a former member of the military and she had lost half her body weight through Zumba. She was so inspiring. I was 48 years old at that time and in pretty good shape, but Zumba was a challenge like nothing I’d ever done before. My sister and I kept coming back and got more comfortable with each class. One of my instructors took notice of me and gave me lots of encouragement. Somewhere along the line, I thought: “maybe I could teach this”. For my upcoming 50th birthday, I’d made a “bucket list” titled DO WHAT I AM AFRAID TO DO. Item #1 was was to get certified to teach Zumba. And I did just that! Then fear held me back from auditioning for many months, even with my mentors encouraging me all the way. Finally, with a mighty push from my sister who dragged me into that first (game changing) class, I auditioned. And guess what? I did NOT get hired! Nope-instead I got some incredible feedback, practiced some more and got hired on the 2nd audition. I’ve been teaching for 6 years now and I couldn’t be happier! And my BEST days? Those are when I see someone who would make an amazing instructor and I get to encourage him/her! But every time I get to dance with people, magic happens. Zumba is the gift that keeps on giving!

I have not tried Zumba yet. I am 68 years old, didn't know what Zumba was, so was checking it out online & found this Zumba info for beginners before doing a class. This instructor is not only very informative, but also enthusiastic, upbeat, witty, understanding, and entertaining. She's "fun". I feel uplifted & inspired just watching her video, & I haven't even tried it yet. I plan to try it soon! Thanks

Thank you so much for your comment Judy, I'm glad this video inspired you! Give it a go, if you want to take it easy at the beginning you can always try a Zumba Gold class (Zumba Gold is the low impact version of Zumba); let me know how you go! I have a few members over 70y.o. in my classes, and they are awesome! I'm sure you'll do great! :-)

This is so sweet! Thank you, Minie! 🥰 I just started Zumba in a class sponsored by my employer. And I heard some colleagues after second class saying "I won't continue, I can't do the steps, she - the instructor - should explain them first." So, I started looking for some background information to share and I stumbled across your channel. This is exactly what I've been looking for! Thank you! Whoo! Whoo!🙏🏻💕💃🎵🎶

Hello. Thank you for this video, it's quite awesome and very helpful. I remember my wife and her friends dragging me to my first zumba class, me being a bit reluctant to go. My very first class was a strong session, so I found the class a lot easier to follow than the dance sessions. It is true what you say about the 'no judging,' as I was welcomed with open arms in that first class. I enjoyed it so much that I decided to attend the dance classes too, which took me quite a while to figure out 🙃 As to the place in the class: At first I was reluctant to go to the dance classes as I am a man and there was a perception that it is meant only for women. However, the ladies at the class do not really care about my y chromosome, and I cannot think about any other fitness or aerobics routine where my cheeks are sore at the end from laughing so much. At first, I preferred to stay more or less at the rear to the side, but now the group has made soace for me at the front in the middle. Even when I arrive a tad late, I see the front middle spot open haha. When I could not attend a class, the instructor told me the next day that the people kept that spot open. I have formed amazing friendships, and can see how proud my wife is when se saw how much weight I lost. I enjoy the zumba classes so much more than I thought I would have. Another huge benefit is mobility. I have fractured some lumbar vertebrae a few years ago. Since joining zumba, I have regained most of my spinal mobility and back aches are a thing of the past. Thank you for your tutorial videos. They help a lot gaining a better understanding of the steps, and have just raised the fun element right through the ceiling.

Aww, thank you so much for your comment, Hannes!🥰 It's amazing to see how Zumba creates such welcoming and inclusive vibes! I know that people think that Zumba is mainly for ladies, which is weird because Beto, the creator of Zumba, is a guy! Thanks for writing your experience, it's going to inspire many more people to follow your example and give it a try! ❤️

My first Zumba experience was hearing about it in the medias. Remember thinking that this fitness dance to Latin music sounded like what I had been missing my entire lifw. Going to my first class and learning that the instructor was my former dance teacher made my expectations sky rocket. And I was not dissapointed. For the first time there was a fitness class where I never watched the clock to see how much time was left. I sweatted more than ever, but I had fun. I never had those bad way sore muscle, I had fun. Now 10 years later, I have been ZIN for 6,5 years and still love it. 💖💖💖🇩🇰🇩🇰

I took my Zumba basics course about 3 months ago and have finally got three classes starting on Sunday!!!! I'm a little terrified, I hope my participants go easy on me :) I'm used to teaching much slower pilates style strength classes so this is waaaaayyyy out of my comfort zone! Thanks for an informative video, I watched your beginners guide and found it really helpful to get back into that Latin vibe and refesh my training. Now to put together my play list and create something fun for next week!

Hello Minie from Japan, I took my first zumba class last Thursday, and of course, I checked your video of steps before it! In my life, I really enjoyed Latin music and move my body with it, but I'm too lazy to listen to an instructors what to do, which kept me away from studio lessons for 7 years or more. But ZUMBA! I don't really have to do follow "how I should be to be proper". As you said at the end of this video, anyone can be perfect! So, I really liked Zumba and can't wait for the next. Could not catch up with fast steps, but who cares? I do care if I have fun, and i absolutely DID! Thank you for your videos, Minie.

Nice Video! Im also a Zin and I agree with most of your tips. But I personally dont always start with my left. Some choreos I start right n some start left. Haha but at the beginning I always show which side im starting with. Thats another Tip I give to my participants "try to understand cues". I always say that certain hand or arm movements stand for certain moves that follow. I also tell my participants to take a break and drink water if they need to. They dont have to wait for me to say "its time to drink". I remember my first Zumba class...Actually I started Zumba with the DVDs and RU-vid. As a dancer I always had interest in fitness formats that had dancing involved and when I saw the infomercial for Zumba I was like "Ill check it out". In 2009 I started with Zumba at home infront of the mirror and in 2014 my mother and my friend convinced me to sign a gym membership and join a Zumba class. I was the only male individual there and also... one of the younger and taller participants... so I definitely stood out as soon as I entered the room. The instructor noticed me but I was not really up for a conversation since I felt super uncomfortable already for the above listed reasons. People were looking at me and later I found out why... but I will come to that soon. So I positioned myself in the last row because I was able to see everything even standing in the far back (since I was the tallest) the class started with a simple warm up which I was able to follow. Then the actual workout started and I had no big problems. As I said Im a dancer and Im used to learning choreographies. After some time I needed to go to the toilet though and I started heading to the exit door... suddenly 3 or 4 lady-participants piled up infront of the door and asked if I want to leave and I should stay and give it a chance. I should not lose my motivation and continue even if its frustrating in the beginning. Haha they really thought I was avout to leave and wanted me to stay. I told them I just had to hit the restroom and that I would be back once Im finished. So I came back and finished the class. After class I felt good... I was not exhausted or frustrated as many other people told me how they felt after their first class. The Instructor came up to me and asked If I ever did Zumba before and I said only with DVDs but never in an actual group with people. She said I would have danced so well and picked up the steps so quick. She asked If I had experience in dancing and I said yes. So she really wanted me to come again. Next class I joined the Instructor pulled me right next to her into the first row. She challenged me a bit and said something like "lets see if you can keep up" or something (I dont remember the exact wording). And I did keep up haha. So I joined more and more classes and the ZIN asked me to make my own choreo. She gave me 2 weeks. Easy task for me. I even prepared two choreos and I was allowed to do them infront of class. Everyone liked it... Some of the ladies in class said when I first entered the room on my first day they were making bets on how long I would actually stay before leaving. All of them lost because one year later I became a ZIN myself and started teaching them hahaha Thats my story

I am a teacher, but due to COVID-19, I was asked to do Zumba with my summer camp kids. I have never done Zumba before; I just love dancing. So I did three classes so far teaching the kids "Zumba". I feel I am not quiet doing it because I think they think Zumba as just dancing crazy like hip hop. I learned from videos that Zumba is like aerobics that people do it to lose weight. I would love to get feedback on what I should do in the next three more classes. Thank you.
@MinieMinarelli
@MinieMinarelli 3 года назад
Hi there, sorry for the late reply. Zumba is a dance fitness program that sees its basic steps in Latin American rhythms: salsa, merengue, cumbia, reggaeton. Yes, you are right, we also dance hip hop during Zumba classes, but that's just an added rhythm (in my classes, I add lots of rhythms, like jive, flamenco, country and more; but I always make sure that the 4 core rhythms are always the priority in the playlist!) It is not allowed to call it Zumba, if the instructor is not a registered ZIN instructor. Also, there is a proper Zumba Kids training; if you work with children, I definitely suggest you do the Zumba Kids training. If you can't take the Zumba training, my suggestion is just to call it Dance class: it will still be lots of fun for you and the kids! All the best.

Alka Agarwal Hi, Zumba is a Latin-dance based workout. It has many different rhythms and many more moves, so there is not one single position for legs, bust and arms. Just follow your instructor and you will be fine and if you have any special needs that require more gentle movements, I recommend Zumba Gold, the low impact version of Zumba!

Hi Chandan, my suggestion would be: look for a Zumba instructor in your area, try a couple of classes and if you like it and want to get the qualification as a Zumba instructor, go on Zumba.com and look for a Basic B1 training. You can't teach Zumba, unless you have the qualification and a current ZIN membership. It's an investment, but personally I think that it's worth it! Good luck!

I went with a friend. Found it overwhelming. Feel like I will never learn. But really want to move.

Hi Lori! Don't worry, it does take a couple of lessons to get the hang of it! Also, maybe try a couple of different instructors, sometimes we connect better with one more than another...good luck!!

I have lost my good shape, due to prolonged best rest as I had knee injury (knee cap displacement), I have no flexibility, but I have gained strength by walking and bicycling. Yesterday, I joined a Zumba class, In how many days, I will feel free to move............. like others...........

Does anybody know if I need to take my shoes and socks off in a Zumba class?
@MinieMinarelli
@MinieMinarelli 4 года назад
True MickieFan hi! Absolutely not! In fact, one of the latest tips is to get to your Zumba class in sportswear (a shirt and leggings) and training shoes! Doing zumba without shoes is not good for your knees and back, so always wear shoes!

Can you teach online zumba class
@MinieMinarelli
@MinieMinarelli 3 года назад
Hi Kalyani! During the lockdown I did have many online classes. Unfortunately now I teach at gyms most days of the week, so there's not much time left for online ones. But I still have a couple of them, if you want to check them out, on www.upgradeyourperformance.com/zumba or you can follow my Zumba playlist, where I share many of my choreographies. I hope that this is helpful! :-)

Hi Karishma, have you participated to Zumba classes before? There might be a few Zumba instructors in your area: try their classes, introduce yourself and, if you decide to move forward and become a Zumba instructor yourself, go to zumba.com to attend a B1 Training and qualify as a Zumba instructor! You can't teach Zumba without the license and a current membership, but if you're motivated, it's worth it! :-)

Why no bare feet?
@MinieMinarelli
@MinieMinarelli 8 месяцев назад
Because it's a cardio fitness class and appropriate training shoes absorb the high impact of jumping and turning around, which otherwise would affect (and potentially injure) ankles and knees.
