bit.ly/DrainAC Watch 3 ways to drain a portable air conditioner. The first option is to manually remove the water bucket and dispose of the water. The second option is to attach a drain hose and let gravity move the water from the portable air conditioner to a floor drain. The third option is to add an external condensate pump that moves collected moisture from the AC vertically without relying on gravity.

i've had success using a pond pump in a pan to pump the water into the discharge air stream. does a pretty good job of removing the moisture, and it was a dirt cheap solution. You can also run a thin tube from your drain pan into the warm air discharge stream. the venturi effect will draw the water out of the pan as long as the elevation grade is not too much.

I have to elevate mine and have a bucket under it. On a hot summer day it can easily fill up my bucket. Of course I could drill holes in my house for the hose to go through, but that sort of defeats the purpose of a *portable* ac :)

Not the greatest idea if done on default drain location height. If it's partially evaporarive there is a disk that throws water on radiator. But if it's single hose there is hardly any purpose aside power consumption

Purchased: August 2023 - still works GREAT!I ru-vid.comUgkxxsUnXhGsSJLim_XnMHyQK0u3XVaW-CGn live in a studio and during the summer it gets scorching hot - really old building with no ac units. I can’t express how EASY it was to install. This unit has been a life savior during the summer and some days during other seasons where it can still be a bit warm at night. In this small place is my friend, a husky, poodle mix and myself. We need AC - lolI don’t use the dehumidifier option - I’m not sure if it will leak in my house, since I did not install the small draining hose that came with it. May look into it late but I don’t worry about much humidity in the apartment. I don’t understand why the negative reviews since all things mentioned, I personally did not find issues with. Definitely worth it!

@Sylvane
@Sylvane 3 года назад
Without knowing your exact model, you'll likely want to add a hose to the lower one for continuous drainage. The one halfway up the unit is for Dehumidify mode. Double check your manual, but that's how most models work.
@77dris

@@Sylvane Thank YOU! I have an Uberhaus portable AC and wondered why there were 2 drains. The lower one almost never needs draining but the top one will empty out gallons in a day when in AC mode. From what you've said, I suspect that most moisture will evap out the air hose/exhaust and that top one isn't necessary to drain unless you use in dehumidify mode as you say (ie, without an exhaust hose attached).

@soulstepper7370
@soulstepper7370 6 лет назад
+Jose is right about the dehumidifier mode, but +Vendetta, the reason it was leaking was because it was full. You have to unscrew the water outlet drain, which is on the back rear, at the bottom, to the left of the power chord. I put unit on a chair and tilted, but water didn't just come out the drainage hole, but also on each side of it. Some got on floor, but the bucket caught most of it. Unit shuts off also automatically, with STOP in the display, which indicates "time to drain". It is supposed to be designed to evaporate the water, but I guess a few of our 90+ degree Humidity days overflowed it. lol (Haier Commercial Cool Portable Air Conditioner (CPN14XC9) - 14,000 btu)

I bought a Whynter ARC-131GD and am continuously draining it through the bottom drain into a bucket. It collects approximately 5 gallons over 24 hours while in "cool" mode. The question is: would it be better to use the top drain and why?
@Sylvane
@Sylvane 7 лет назад
Hi! That particular model has Whynter's AutoDrain technology where if it's installed properly it's supposed to recycle the captured moisture and exhaust it outside. In that case the benefit is that you should never have to empty the reservoir unless it collects more moisture than it can pump out quickly. If that happened the compressor would automatically stop until the reservoir was emptied to prevent it overflowing. Thanks for your question!

And does this water not harbour bacteria, mold etc?

You should definitely drain the water before storing it for the season. The drain port is typically in the back at the bottom of the unit. You’d have to get a condensate pump like he says in the video. They can run from about $49 to about $115. It hooks up to the drain directly and then you plug it in and most have a float sensor that gauges how much water is in a reservoir so it knows when to start the pump.

@tessathehipchick
@tessathehipchick 11 месяцев назад
Ok this Is a question that still nobody has answered in any of these videos about portable air conditioner units. When they get full and need to be emptied how will I know it's full? Mine is digital like the majority of newer units on the market today so is there a setting on the LED front panel that will light up to indicate thst the reservoir is full and I need to empty it or how am I supposed to know when it's full and needs to be emptied? I was using the plastic tubing hose thst connects to the drain plug and just placing a damn cookie sheet underneath the middle of the hose so I would just continously empty itself thst way and then end up overflowing on my bedroom carpet a few times because the only way I can get it to drain using that plastic piece of tubing that comes with the window kit is to place a flat cookie sheet under it .I tried a glass bowl but the damn hose kept Flipping itself out of the damn bowl in the middle of the night getting splashes of dirty condensation water all over my carpet so it's a never ending battle. Tonight I completely cleaned the emptied the reservoir by having to put the cookie sheet under the front of the unit and tip it backwards while holding onto the unit with my hands and waiting for all the water to stop but not much came out because the last week it's been draining a lot by using the plastic tubing and if was very humid here in Ontario the past month and a half so the condensation really built up quickly then I put the cap back on the drain plug and made sure It was on there tightly so it does not leak water during the night. Then I cleaned the grill at the very back of my unit that just slides in and out and wiped all the dust off it with a Mico fiber cloth and made sure it was nice and clean and dry before I put it back in place. So I guess 🤷 I'll wait and see what happens now that I've taken out that rubber tubing that I was using since I installed this brand new unit in May this year but it's very frustrating and I'm fed up with it now and it takes up too much space in my room to have that rubber tubing laying on a cookie sheet beside the ac unit which is beside my bed 🛌 😄 I've had enough of friggin summer ☀️ 😅😅😅😅! I'm ready to disassemble this unit, clean it off inside and outside and cover it for the fall and winter months and embrace the fall and winter months with open arms ❤😅😅! Has anyone else come across the same problem as me with their portable air conditioner units with the draining aspect of it? If so would really appreciate some honest feedback about everyone else's experience and what you ended up doing and has anyone else used a damn cookie sheet underneath that rubber tubing or is it just me? 😅

Me too 😢 it takes up so much space… not really portable either because it overflowed once all over my bedroom floor so I elevated it to drain it using the plastic tube in a friggin huge container… so I have no idea if we’re supposed to put the caps back on the drain holes and just do it once every other day. Not a problem! We suggest you make sure the drain cap is on securely and then unplug your AC. If it doesn't work when you plug it back in, call Sunpentown's customer service at 800-330-0388.

I have a temp unit in my home until my air conditioner is replaced on Monday...it was working great the first day..second not so good. The reason...trying to drain out a window instead of down into a bucket....remember you can't drain up hill.boing!!

That is where the condensate pump would come in. Water won't run uphill remember.

How come you have a drain at the bottom and the other one on top (where you attach the hose). Why is the hose so high? Do you have to siphon it out with the hose? You did not explain. Do you just plug the hose and it will gravitate down by itself? Will it gush out before you try to connect the hose? Do you connect the hose when it's empty and leave it on? When it's full?

Both drains are used to get rid of collected water. The drain port at the bottom is typically used when ACs are in standard Cool mode and don't need to be emptied very often. When water collects extremely quickly (like in Dehumidifier mode if your AC offers that), then you can attach a hose to the top drain for continuous drainage. Water should automatically flow through the hose when the pan is full; but it won't come rushing out. Every AC is slightly different, so reach out to your manufacturer for specific instructions if you're still having problems.

I need to drain mines every hour or so. Its horrible. And if I don't it will just start pouring out on my carpet. These are the worse AC's in my opinion

Put mine on a chair and tilted it. Some missed my bucket, not just coming out the drainage hole. Cleaned it up, washed the filter, plugged it back up and back in dehumidifier mode.

My portable ac started smelling like urine. So I took it apart to see if I had a mouse nest but I didnt. It needed to be cleaned anyway but it still smells like urine? any clues?

It's black mold you'll need to take it outside, saturate it with Lysol foaming bathroom cleaner, let it sit awhile then pressure wash it out. Rinse and repeat once per week. I'm waiting on an inverter u shaped window unit to arrive and then I'm selling the portable. It's too humid in Arkansas, and forget this it's too much damn work.

It's in a blue can this is the only thing that works. Black mold gives me an instant migraine when I turn the unit on, nothing else not even bleach helped.

So I have this stupid ac unit, and every 5 minutes or so it has P1 error, and I check the drain on the bottom everytime and nothing, there's no water in the container or water from the top, but it starts the fan option, instead of the cool. it's getting annoying. I knew I should have bought that damn insurance on it.

Sergei Mathas Sorry you're having so many problems. You should reach out to your manufacturer, because they'll have a better idea of how to fix the problem. There may be an issue with the draining system that you can't see (a crack in the pan can cause errors on some models), or it may be an issue with the control panel. The manufacturer should be able to point you in the right direction.

There is no partially evaporarive air conditioners. There are only ones where manufacturer used tiny bit of common sense and "i am an idiot manufacturer i do whatever however i want and I don't have to explain to anyone my disregard for quality". Most of them are in second category.
