Draining the unused gas from your generator is a simple process to keep your seasonal gas-powered engine ready to run when you need it the most.
Why do you drain the gas? Gas changes chemistry after just a few months' time and can prevent engines from starting and running smoothly. Fresh gas is essential for good care of engines. Seasonally operated engines are more prone to having poor start-ups because they have been sitting and may have had gas left in the tank for extended periods of time. This video demonstrates how to drain the gas line of this Generac GP3250. It is simple to do. This process will be similar for most gas-powered generators and many other gas-powered small engines.
NOTE #:1 once you drain the gas line, restart the engine to finish emptying the remaining gas inside the carburetor and/or...
NOTE #2 carburetor nut: There should be a nut on the bottom of your carburetor you can also remove to drain small amounts of gas remaining already in the carburetor.
What to do with the old gas? Small amounts of clean filtered gas, I reuse in my own vehicle with plenty of fresh gas.

You neglected to drain the carburetor bowl, which is the most important part. Many carburetor bowls have a bolt in them for that specific purpose. Alternatively, shut off the fuel supply and run the engine until it sucks the carburetor dry. Otherwise the gas in the carb will turn to varnish over time. I agree with your suggestion to label gas cans with the date filled.

Thanks for watching. good comment... Restarting the motor to finish draining the gas in the carburetor is in the written description for the video. Thanks again for watching.

I had to take the feul line off at the feul valve cause it was going too be way more difficult to take it off at the carb ,,the gas runs EXTREMELY slow,,is there a filter in the valve or something that needs to come out to make it run faster?

Hi Scott, Thanks for watching! Did you try opening the fuel cap while draining the gas? Double check your fuel line as well... if it is partially closed this may slow things down. Hope you will subscribe!

Should even the smallest amount of gas be drained? I added just enough gas to get it started, ran it a while till it ran out of gas. But looking in the gas tank there is still just a little gas left in the tank.

Run it dry. Any gas left may clog up the carburetor. Thanks for watching and subscribing!

what fuel stabilizer u recommend ??👍

Thanks for the question. Honestly, I can't tell what brand to use. I stopped in our local NAPA auto parts store and bought what they recommended. The bottle is gone. I believe the contents all stabilizers are very similar. I'm not sure if I posted this in the video or not, but REC Gas is the best for small engines such as your generator or power washers. Rec Gas does not have any Ethanol. The gas lasts longer. Still can use the Stabilizer if it will sit for more than a few weeks.

My RS 5500 does not have a petcock to turn off the fuel. Instead, just setting it to "stop" cuts it off. To drain, one must disconnect the fuel hose from the filter, then turn the start/stop knob to "Run" or "Choke" to get the fuel draining. Took me an hour to figure that out.😊

I think I ruined my generator. I got my generator 4 years ago after Irma and I didn't know that you were supposed to drain it. Needless to say, the gas has been in the generator for the whole 4 years. Question: will the method you showed be able to empty the whole tank? (if there's anything still left in there. And also. I had tried to put the leftover gas in my vehicle from that time, but I was not able to because the spout of the gas can does not fit into my gas tank. Does anyone know how to get the gas out of it? Thank you in advance for all the help, I am really trying to be a more aware, informed consumer.

Hi Kamulah, You probably did not completely ruin your generator... But you may have a gunked up carburetor. After draining your tank, drain your carburetor bowl as well. There is typically a nut you can remove to finish draining the gas (if there still is any) in the carburetor. Once you do this, try putting a small amount of fresh clean gas in the generator (32 oz or so) and try starting starting it again. If it does not start, you may need to clean or replace the carburetor but the rest of your machine should be ok. Hope this helps!

Any suggestions if mine has had gas sitting in it for 6-7 years?
@mi-tinker
@mi-tinker Год назад
Hi Chris, thanks for the question. I'm guessing you've drained what gas (sludge) might have been left. It will probably need some carb. cleaner. If that does not work, maybe either tear down the carb and clean it manually or replace it. Let us know how it all works out! Any other suggestions are welcome.

My generator is almost full, used it for a few hours...do we have to drain the 4 1/2 gallons that are left in there or just what’s in the carburetor?
@mi-tinker
@mi-tinker 3 года назад
Thanks for the question. My recommendation is that If you are not going to be using it again soon (within a week or 2) drain the tank for sure. Once done you restart the motor for a few minutes until the motor stops to completely empty the carburetor.

You can also add fuel stabilizer to your generator,run it for like 5 min amd then youre good for like 8 months with that gas in there

What is the purpose of the hose on top of the tank? It appears the fuel come from the bottom of the tank, not the hose on top..
@mi-tinker
@mi-tinker 3 года назад
Hi Gary, The owner's manual indicates the hose on top is a Recovery Hose that connects to a Roll Over Valve (also on top attached to the tank) that passes fuel vapors to the carbon canister.

Isn't there a screw or bolt that you can take out to drain has out of carbrator?
@mi-tinker
@mi-tinker 3 года назад
Thanks for the question. I'm sure many generators have such a cap on the carburetor, which would be awesome to drain it free of old gas... I did not readily see one on this model. Be interesting to check out once the snow is gone!

If you don't have a drain bolt in the carb the best way to get the carburetor empty is to run the generator empty

The Chinese Honda clone engines (a huge percentage of small engines) have two screws in the bottom of the carb bowl. The one on the very bottom removes the bowl, but the side screw drains it without removal. It's a one minute job to drain the carb and it should be done any time you won't be using the generator for a while. Google a Honda GX200 carb if you want to see a pic of the screw setup.

What of a diesel generator

Wish I could tell you, but I don't have experience with a diesel generator. I'm guessing it would be similar. Drain the tank and/or run it dry. best of luck!

U didn't drain the ball valve that's the most important and allow tank and ball valve cup to stay open for 48 hrs to dry out gas...

Thanks for your note. I did note in the description to also drain the carburetor via removing the nut, (and will have a follow up video for that) however, if you are referring to a separate way to drain the gas please send a photo or link to a video! Always glad to learn something new.
