How to Easily Polish and Port a Throttle Body

Video tutorial on how to port and polish a vehicle's throttle body. In order to do this procedure, you must remove the throttle body from the engine so you can probably polish and port the throttle body and the material shavings do not enter the engine. This is a very small horsepower increase depending on the design of your engine, but it will improve throttle response and reduce the amount of oily residue build up. Do not remove any material from around where the throttle plate touches in the bore either. Also when doing this procedure, I would recommend purchasing a new throttle body gasket so you won't have any vacuum leaks once reinstalling. This particular tutorial was done on a 1997 BMW 540i.

Tools/Supplies Needed:
-socket set and ratchet
-throttle body cleaner
-lint free clothes
-new replacement throttle body gasket
-tape
-rotary grinding stones
-penetrating oil
-Dremel/rotary tool
-flap wheel drum sanders ranging from 40 grit to 320 grit
-400 grit wet/dry sanding paper
-abrasive pad (finer than 400 grit)
-metal polish
-thread locker
Procedure:
-first remove the throttle body from the vehicle
-remove the butterfly from the throttle body, most are held in with two screws that go into the shaft
-if you can, also remove the shaft and linkage
-tape around the shaft or the hole where the shaft was so no metal shavings get into that area and cause premature wear for the bushings or bearings
-in order to smooth out those edges, you can use grinding stones for either a drill or rotary tool such as a Dremel
-when using a grinding stone, its best to use WD-40 penetrating oil with it so the aluminum material doesn't plug up the stone and it'll no longer cut away any material
-once you are satisfied with the sharper edges being ground down, you can down move onto sanding drums for the rotary tool
-once you have reached the highest grit in a flap wheel drum sander, you can now do some sanding by hand with 400 grit and add some water for lubrication
-depending on the color, will depending on how course the abrasive pad material is
-I started out with green and then moved onto the red pad for the finest compound
-you can also use water with this too to help finer sanding and to keep the dust down
-again once you are satisfied, you can now move onto a metal polishing compound
-the metal polishing compound I would recommend is Eagle One
-apply the polishing compound paste and rub until highly mirrored finish
-multiple coats can be applied to achieve a higher polished surface
-once you are done with the bore, you can now move onto the throttle plate
-most throttle plates are smooth to begin with so you can skip directly to the Scotch Brite stage using the same procedure and finally move onto the metal polishing compound
-once done, you are ready to reassemble the throttle body
-make sure you peen the thread of the screws on the other side to ensure they don't come out or apply Lock Tight thread sealant
-install new throttle body gasket along with throttle body to your vehicle

There really isn't much of an increase of horsepower considering you're not increasing the size of the bore where the throttle plate is. But this does allow the air to flow smoother into the intake, increase throttle response, reduces drag on the air flow, and prevents the oil/film build-up inside the throttle body.

Correct! This is more for the purpose of efficiency. I've been doing mechanics since my teens, and have always stressed the importance of what sometimes just a good cleaning will do! Like air conditioning systems for example.

+Argenis Bautista No I do not offer this service, but a local performance tuning shop would. Also if you have the same car as mine, the intake manifold doesn't require this same procedure as well. It has a plastic composite intake manifold instead, which was designed to be as large as possible as well as being very smooth inside. But I would recommend cleaning it as they can have a build-up of debris on the inside over time, especially if you've had a PCV failure and this can affect the vehicle's performance. If you wanted to go with the extra step, you can polish and port the heads. That would be much more costly, but it is a possibility.

It might be helpful to replace phillips head screws with allen head screws when putting the throttle plate/flapper back on the throttle shaft. Probably a 1 time operation, but allen heads are a lot less likely to get screwed up when installing/removing. If phillips heads get screwed up in removal, you can go to the next larger thread by drilling them out. These threads are usually metric so there is not a huge difference in size ( 1 millimeter = .040") also enlarge hole in throttle plate to allow it to center itself in the bore before tightening. Drilling and tapping with plate installed tends to lock plate in position. You can usually find button head allen screws if you are concerned about air flow compared to the regular square shouldered allen screws.

You polish the combustion chamber and the exhaust ports not the intake. Polishing helps keep carbon deposits from building up on the exhaust ports. You need a rough finish to increase boundary layer flow against the surface of the intake manifold. Dimpling works the best but is very hard to do in most cases. Of course we are only talking around a .5 to 1 percent difference in power increase so in most cases its not worth it to dimple so just rough sandpaper is the next best thing. We have also dimpled intake valves as well for an extra .3 hp on the small engines.
@jacobpulliam1748

At the throttle body i think it helps prob not much, once you get into the intake manifold and cylinder head it should defently be slightly rough
@edlingja1
@edlingja1 6 лет назад
I always wondered why people polish the snot out of the intake. It makes sense that you would disturb the valves, but how to do it without damaging that's where the money is made! But the main thing is that many passenger vehicles have quite a bit of crankcase ventilation going on directly in front of the TB. You should really clean it like every 5-15 years depending on mileage & personality. I guess this is a big bmw though, so idk if it has a turbo or whatever. If there is a large, or multiple, turbo(s) you could probably go polished TB & further work to disturb the remaining length. The reality is that alot of the combustion at the top end will be ocurring outside the cylinder anyways.

Thank you for the support :) For boring out a throttle body, it'll need to be done on a lathe. It'll have to be completely disassembled, the slot in the center shaft will need to be wider, and a new throttle plate will need to be made.

UNIQUE youasked allot with one question. I assume your bottom end is cast not forged? 55mm to 65mm will not yield enough gain to make or break bottom end, that's good. A power adder ie, nos, turbo or SC will push bottom end. You need to be accurate in fuel pressure adjustment. You need to seriously think of dyno tuning because 55mm to 65mm is enough change to cause detonation if your too lean. What is your exhaust setup?

if it wasn't mentioned an alternative I found better than scotchbrite is steel wool. There are progressively finer grades, same as sandpaper. Use the polish with the SW. Finish with "000" (finest grade) and just buff residual polish off w/clean microfiber towel and it will be highly shined. Thanks for the video. Too bad no one will see the effort.

If I polish my TB is it as good as porting it?
@4DIYers
@4DIYers 10 лет назад
Unfortunately no... The porting allows more air into the throttle body. But that also depends on your throttle body design. If you have odd edge or an irregular shaped bore, it tends to cause turbulence in the throttle, therefore reducing the flow pattern. You can go ahead and polish the throttle which does improve some of the performance. But you won't be able to achieve it's maximum potential.

@4DIYers
@4DIYers 8 лет назад
+micheal balma What is the upgrade on??? I did an upgrade like that years ago on a Ranger and the computer was able to adjust accordingly to the larger bore. As for causing flat spots, no. It could be an issue with the new TPS if it works on a potentiometer.

@turkandproud69 8 лет назад
+4DIYers yeap. if i cant use the IAC Valve. can i just use the idle screw to control the idle?
@4DIYers
@4DIYers 8 лет назад
It's not something I would recommend as it's a fixed adjustment as opposed to an IAC valve which is a variable adjustment controlled by the vehicle's computer. Therefore you may setup the throttle for when the engine is warm, but it'll most likely be too low for when the engine is cold. Same goes for a change in altitude as well, the engine won't have a way to compensate for that, therefore you'll most likely encounter running issues.

gain or loss from a 65mm throttle body from 55mm port matched with intake,headers,exhaust on a 2.2L motor?
@4DIYers
@4DIYers 8 лет назад
+micheal balma If you're increasing the size of throttle body, I would also recommend upgrading the fuel delivery as well, especially since you're increasing the flow of exhaust as well. You should certainly experience some noticeable gains. As to how much, well it's hard to say how much because it's dependent on if it's extremely de-tuned from factory or not.

The injectors are 220cc.i will be using stock injectors but aftermarket sard fuel regulator. Its a 5sfe engine a engine thats always lean. Hoping this will be sufficient. And it wouldnt be tuned. Only thing ill be doing extra is porting the cylinder head and advance timing & fuel pressures
@4DIYers
@4DIYers 8 лет назад
Not sure what injector design you have, but sometimes you can upgrade them to a multi hole to help optimize the air/fuel mixture. I would also recommend porting the intake manifold as well and use some ball hones to smoothen out the internal rough casting. Have you considered phenolic spacers too??? Helps keep the intake heat transfer down.

bman737 Considering you aren't enlarging the bore of the throttle body around the throttle plate, this should make that much of a different. The end is able to compute any adjustment very fast regardless. With this modification, it's creating air flow efficiency, reducing drag, and optimizing atomization.

+micheal balma Unfortunately I'm not familiar with those engines so I am not sure. It would be best to install an air/fuel meter to determine if your car is running accordingly. You don't want it running too lean and you'll lose performance and then there is the risk of damaging the engine.

+4DIYers i will be installing a aftermarket fuel regulator. the engine is prone to run lean as it is stock standards.
@piecartbox

+micheal balma man I thought my 360cc were small. Fuel regulator is for when u run more boost/pump/injector and the new pressure from the pump is overrunning the stock unit.

A Fuel Pressure Regulator is used in a return style fuel system. Fed EPA regulations require all new cars to have returnless systems to reduce fumes created from fuel splashing back into the tank. EPA screwed the manual tuner. Get a wideband air/fuel ratio gauge. Helps to tune. And you'll see if you run too lean. Although I don't think you'll run too lean with this mod. The only time there will a difference anyways is at WOT. Peace out Holmes

ive decided to go for a 60mm throttle body. its gotta better sound but im just trying to adjust it at the moment and its running pig rich

are there noticeable power gains?
@4DIYers
@4DIYers 7 лет назад
The biggest noticeable improvement was throttle response, but this will depend on your vehicle and how much of a modification was made.

If the oil / buildup stuff doesn't get stuck to the inside after you do this the P&P, where does it go? In the engine?
@4DIYers
@4DIYers 10 лет назад
It'll just get burned up in the combustion chamber just like if there was any excessive oil content within the intake.

thanks for the video, ive seen the butterfly shaft machined down betwrrn the screws and the sidewalls, so its down to the flap itself, what are your thoughts on this? what do you use to stop the screws falling out once they have been out? threadlock? thanks
@4DIYers
@4DIYers 10 лет назад
I have seen people cut down the shaft in the past and it would be a great idea if you had the means to do it and also if you're able to remove the shaft. Once the butterfly is open, even with the stock shape of the shaft being round, it can change the airflow to some extent. As for the screws, you either peen the threads or apply some threadlock.

4Diyers really, for a street car, that kind of mod would give very little added performance anyway, unless it's a track and you're needing every little bit to be more competitive,
@4DIYers
@4DIYers 10 лет назад
The way I look at it, every little bit counts... Someone can do a series of small 1hp performance gains. In the end if they've improved 10 different items, then they have a 10hp increase. It doesn't mean this is something for a track only application, people can use this for added street performance as well. Not to mention just for regular daily driving, it may have positive effects on fuel consumption as well.

I agree, I have a 97 prelude i'm working on. I can't afford a super charger, or turbo, so I have to do little things like this, that the young guys probably don't know about. what I meant is, shaving the butterfly is such a minor mod, and you take a big chance on screwing it up for such a small gain. porting and polishing the tb is a definite must. alopng with that I've also built my own TRUE SEALED RAMAIR SYSTEM. btw my prelude is making about 205-210, not bad for a stocker. I prefer to under rate the power, it probably makes a few more, but i'll leave the bragging for the teens who think putting a coffee can muffler on makes it a race car. I must be one of the oldest import guys out there. i'm 46, and my dad, who helped me put in the lowering springs in, he's 67. we've always built big block mopars, this is our first import, having fun with it.

4Diyers well ive done it, every little helps, it was tense cutting the shaft down but all done and polished up, im going to sand and polish my inlet manifold next as that is rough, its an FSI engine so no need to keep the roughness in for mixing the fuel, thanks for the help

Does this mod increase or decrease horsepower?
@4DIYers
@4DIYers 10 лет назад
This mod increases power and throttle response.
@lees.4084
@lees.4084 9 лет назад
4Diyers only on SOME vehicles. On most, the TB is not a restrction to the engine, and porting will offer no real power gains.
@MrClayFTW
@MrClayFTW 9 лет назад
Lee S. Yes but this same concept can be applied to the upper and lower manifolds as well and if youve got a car like my caddy that has a really restrictive stock air intake and intake manifolds you would see serious gains from adding a cold air intake and porting and polishing. Ive heard many people say not to get carried away with the porting part tho and in fact several say less is more and the gains are from smoothing everything with polishing compound.
@lees.4084
@lees.4084 9 лет назад
MrClayFTW Not sure which Caddy engine you have, but regardless, you won't likely see any tangible gains from this. There would have to be a demonstrated deficiency with your particular manifold design in order for this to be of any significant gain. Which year and engine do you have?

Lee S. I did this mood to my Colorado 3.5l and improved throttle response a lot. Mpg and 0-60 is the same

I could see this gaining POSSIBLY 2 to 5 hp.
@menogusta9829
@menogusta9829 9 лет назад
82raptor But the power to $ ratio is very high. The people who do this generally already have most of the tools and consumables involved in the process.

How did that extra one horsepower treat you?
@4DIYers
@4DIYers 6 лет назад
Horsepower increase isn't so much noticeable with this particular car, but the throttle response has greatly increased. It depends on the vehicle.
@philmitchell9552
@philmitchell9552 5 лет назад
Things like this aren’t for a direct horse power increase, it’s for improved drivability, making the intake nice and smooth the whole way through will let everything flow nicely and therefore have a more responsive engine

benefits of doing this?
@4DIYers
@4DIYers 8 лет назад
+bartojoe Yes there is. It will increase throttle response, reduce the chance of oily residue build up in the bore, reduce airflow turbulence which will reduce performance, a mild increase in performance depending on how poorly designed the existing throttle body is, and increase fuel economy.
@piecartbox
@piecartbox 8 лет назад
+4DIYers If you've opened your intercooler piping and plenum up huge this might help a bit... but most ppl who have welded up a new plenum will just use a larger TB since they are fabbing a new surface for it to mount to anyway.
@4DIYers
@4DIYers 8 лет назад
piecartbox This is an NA engine. This is just intended for anyone wanting to modify stock parts without getting into too much more or an excessive amount of work retrofitting a new throttle body.
