Omg, one of the many times I was eating korean bbq, a white family came in for their first time and had no idea what they were doing. They go and get all their meats from the buffet area and then come back to their seats. The waiter then gives them their drinks and turns on the stove. The husband and the wife apparently have no idea why there is a stove and why their meat is raw and I guess they assumed you eat it like sushi because this was an asian place. They then start eating fucking raw meat and their kids are watching them because they want to make sure it's ok. They tell their kid's it's fine once they tried it and the kids start trying it slowly too. At this point, I'm just watching with my jaw dropped. One of the parents then eats a piece of fat with no meat and starts dry heaving because it is gross. The waiter sees this and comes back and tells them that they are supposed to use the stove and they are just saying OOOOHHHH like it never even came to mind. They then start cooking the meat slightly embarrassed and the kids burn themselves. I was just smh and facepalming the whole time. It ruined my own experience.

Those are not really authentic Korean food. They sound more like Korean-American food. Looks like they took authentic Korean food and transformed it into more American-friendly style. It's okay though cause we do the same here. We take American food and turn them Korean style. Like Bulgogi burgers and Kimchi pizzas and etc. Whatever works I guess.

A couple of things I don't agree with (I'm Korean-American). My 2c Oppa: you say this as a female to a male older than you or -very rarely- the same age, and only to the same age if you are submitting to that role. If you call a younger male "oppa," you are an outlier. I would even say an extreme outlier. Saying oppa without context doesn't mean anything other than she recognizes you're older and someone they don't consider a stranger. Even then, a woman can call a male waiter this just to get their attention regardless of what your real ages are. Same with males calling male waiters and waitresses "hyung" or "nunah." Dong seng: regardless of sex, you say this to refer to anyone younger than you (rarely do you address them by this word), and only if you know this person. I've never even heard of it used to friendzone someone, and it's very disrespectful to call anyone older than you a dong seng. If you're older and a girl calls you "dong seng" I'd be offended because that is just disrespectful. "Yuh gi yo" and "juh gi yo" can be used interchangeably. I've never heard of anyone making the distinction that they do here. You can confirm this (if you can type hangul) in google. Older people pour drinks like that if they don't know someone younger. If you are over the age of 16 and you're older, you generally poor with both hands and drink away if they are anywhere near your age, and it's also safe to do because it's respectful. If you're younger, you usually tell them not to pour that way (pyun ha gae ha seh yo!) if you are "agreeing" to be younger and they older, and the older can tell the younger the same. Basically as a gesture of, "let's be friends and drop these formalities."

Oh, and "go chu" = pepper, "kko chu" or more accurately "ggo chu" = slang for penis. They sound the same to non-Koreans. Korean girls will sometimes flip the meat because they like doing that and want to seem motherly, as a friend or as a girlfriend. It depends, and isn't necessarily friendzoning you.

Actually, calling someone "oppa" or "donseng" doesn't mean a girl likes you. It's based on age. If ur older than the girl, ur an oppa. If ur younger, ur her donseng. To be honest, i think when a girl calls a guy "oppa" outside korea, she's friendzoning an older guy. If she likes u, she calls u by your name, even if ur older than her.

Yeo Gi Yo = Ju Gi Yo. When asked politely. Ju Gi Yo in an ill-tempered manner means something different (rude).

What I love best are the Korean noodle soups, so many creative varieties. If I ever were to visit Korea- I'd probably feel as though I were in a candy store...and probably wouldn't want to come back to the U.S.
