This video is a chatty behind the scenes look at my latest embroidery pattern, which is a strawberry plant and mouse! I share some tips I have personally found helpful for how to embroider more neatly.
The strawberry and mouse pattern is available to all of my patrons for free. You can join my Patreon for monthly patterns, behind the scenes, tutorials, and more.

I think the only thing I can add is that the brand of floss can impact the final look of your work. Cosmo threads are finer than DMC. I use them when I want something wispy and delicate, or to add fine detail. Anchor and J&P Coates are more coarse than DMC. I use them when I'm stitching something textural like bark or turkey stitched thistles.

That was extremely helpful. I’m on my second picture and I’m making a lot of mistakes, but as I watch your videos I’m improving immensely! I’m tackling thread painting and it’s been pretty rough but I’m determined to get better. I want to be able to do pet photos like you do! You’re so talented!

I have been doing this type of embroidery for a short time, so your tips are very helpful. If I don't like the way, or thread number looks; I just get my little scissors out and snip it all out and try again.

I think the biggest thing I learned was just slowing down, and not going too fast with my stitches. it's the quickest way to make mistakes is if you're just stitching really quickly without much intention in where it's going.

This pattern is adorable!! One thing I just learned is to thread my needle so I have a knot at the end and a tail near the needle like you have here. I was doubling the thread over and knotting it together and it was making my stitches too thick and causing the threads to become messy. 😊p.s. love your channel!❤

Any tips how to prevent fabric from bunching up? Or how to fix your fabric when it starts bunching up?
@crewelghoul

For thinner fabrics it helps to double them up. Or you can bind the embroidery hoop with cotton twill tape. Another thing is to get a hoop that’s a little bit nicer than the bamboo or wood ones you get at the craft store. I like to get beechwood hoops, you can find them on Etsy or Amazon!

when you outline in split stitch, how many strands of floss are you using? your outline looks so much sharper than mine D:

I usually use 1 or 2! 1 can be hard to use but you can do a back split stitch and it’s easier (go down through the stitch instead of up through)

How do you know what direction your thread should go?

Please can you tell me how you keep your embroidery stitches flat mine seem loose and stick up
@crewelghoul

It may be your fabric! Is it completely smooth and tight in the hoop? If your fabric is tight and you’re still having problems it may be uneven tension when you’re making each stitch. For each stitch you make, make sure each one is tight but not so much so that it’s pulling or puckering the fabric.
