You're going to fall off your skateboard from time to time, and the bigger you are, the more it's going to hurt. In this video I explain how to minimise your injuries.

When you fall a billion times from skating, it'll soon feel like its slow motion and you can just anticipate your landing and direct your body accordingly. I usually fall foward past the nose from wheelbite or something and I land on my arm on my side protecting my ribs and then I roll about to redirect the energy. The most I get out with is just a scrape or bruise on my arm.

I've seen other videos where dudes just talk about how to fall. I love that you actually do it for visual example. Very helpful thanks. I stopped skating at 18 after a wrist injury. Now I'm 31 and am getting back into it, but with a job, wife, kids, ministry, etc, I really can't afford any bad injuries. This video is helping me overcome that fear and try to not fall so hard!

Very good advice, i've worked on my reaction so now when i fall, i naturally react by tucking in arms and roll if possible, rather than trying to stop my momentum with my arms/landing flat footed from high falls. I've skated for 3 years and haven't had any fractures. Then again, i don't skate many big things, and it might just be lucky.

Very helpful video. Always get prepared to fall ! Today I changed both my usual skateboarding clothes and shoes, and skated with a brand new jeans that impeded my movements. Coupled with a starting achilles tendonitis that was also reducing my foot strength, I fell backward miserably like a total beginner just by simply pushing my board on a flat surface... Just pain in muscles and some scratches, but remember that you may fall stupidly at anytime, not only when you're doing dangerous tricks. So get prepared !

Again, very helpful. Some advice I would offer, in regards to skating around cars, assume the worst at all times, anticipate a car is going to pull out on you, anticipate the dog is going to case after you, anticipate a car coming round a blind corner. I've had several near misses, I'm not proud of them, they scare the driver just as much but I get carried away sometimes; I love skating the streets

Very good video, thank you. I'm struggling with this. My story : I practice martial arts and weight training, and am still healing my digestion with my herbal doctor. Around 3 months ago i restarted skating after 30 years. And my friend from back then joined me. I was in heaven : Skateparks everywhere. Before, i had no idea what to do with my free time in the weekend, i can't train all the time and I'm not much of a people-person. All went really well until one weekend at the skatepark i fell down, sprained my ankle severely and bruised my ribs. Now 10 weeks later, i can almost train everything again. In that time that i couldn't exercise anything, my health declined everyday until i felt terribly tired cold and depressed. I swore i would never touch a skateboard again. And of course now i start to feel sorry for not wanting to restart again.

I think you have to prioritise what's important to you Sammy. It sounds as though you had a great sense of companionship with your friend. Is s/he into skating too or could you find that friendship with another safer sport like tennis or snowboarding or mountain biking? Are you willing to accept the mental health hit of another injury? Now that you're older, you heal slower, you're heavier, and injuries are more likely. Also martial arts breakfalls for mats definitely are not suitable for the concrete. If you DO decide to skate again, you have to mentally immunise yourself against likely future injuries. Very best of luck Sammy, may your lines be long and your falls small!

My friend fell off a FS 50/50 he only have one arm and he fell right on the ledge, he did twist trying to land on his only arm and it really saved him, 6'5 not lightweight, could of been really bad but he rolled out of it with just few scratch instead of broken ribs

That's actually a really good one. If you did martial arts, I'd tell you to do a rolling breakfall because it's a good way to avoid bashing your hip. Because I always wear wrist protectors, I can afford to fall on my hands into a press up position. I think your best bet is to allow yourself to roll very loosely in a kind of diagonal direction so that you don't bounce onto your hip. Practice on the grass first! Good luck!

@goobon
@goobon 9 лет назад
When I first started skating I was going too fast down a hill far too steep for someone at the level i was then. I had an injured wrist (from another skating accident) so instead of sticking my arms out to catch myself I turned myself mid-fall and caught myself on my shoulder. I flipped over and landed on my right forearm and scraped the shit out of it and got some nasty scars, but I'm glad I did that instead of sticking out my arms because I would end up with 2 broken wrists. Im a large guy (6'2 and around 240) and I have really wide shoulders so that makes it a bit easier to land on them and spread the impact out. Not only that, flipping over after a hard fall is pretty awesome.
@matbroomfield
@matbroomfield 9 лет назад
In that situation, going with the fall, rather than trying to stop all that momentum dead in its tracks was clearly exactly the right thing to do. Sometimes, the injuries are the lesser of two evils, exactly like you said in your case.
@goobon
@goobon 9 лет назад
Mat Broomfield I was mostly concerned about hurting my wrist even more. I fell on it about 3 days before, and I had cysts on my palm and wrist. They made falling on my hand a lot worse. Not only did I hurt those a lot and made my whole hand swollen and unuseable for a week, but I also sprained my wrist. Learned to just take the fall and not try to stop it real quick. I would much rather just clean up a nasty cut or scrape than break/sprain/bruise my hands and wrists and be out of them for a while.
@wagodad9476
@wagodad9476 9 лет назад
I had a similar situation, except I was hauling ass at night on my street. It was hella dark and the roads had pot holes and cracks. I got my front trucks caught between a crack. I flew forward first thing I reacted was to put my hand in first collapse and roll it out while evading my head hitting the ground. I just got scratched up and a good laugh.

Yes yes yes, roll with it every time. I guess the trick is not to panic and relax, which is easier than it sounds but works. I've done it before, motorbikes, mountain bikes, horses. I think the science behind it is "the long the impact takes the more the force is dissipated" or something like that. Good work Matt...
@Cobwobbler
@Cobwobbler 5 лет назад
Hi Matt, I remembered a bit of physics from school and found this video explain forces of impact. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ILIFo2X7EUY.html If you increase the time of impact (the 0.28 seconds in this example) by sliding or rolling out then you lesson the force going through your bones so they don't break. That's the theory any way.

@matbroomfield
@matbroomfield 10 лет назад
Thank you for your feedback Debra. Obviously for an elderly person, avoiding falls is vital as they no longer have the bone density, or reaction time to save themselves. Buut, if they did find themselves falling, I would always suggest that they tried to crumple and roll, rather than saving themselves, so the energy doesn't get transmitted into joints or snap bones. I can't imagine that it would really be practical to teach! You're doing a good thing there Debra!
@musicvelle
@musicvelle 7 лет назад
Another good method of falling is to land on your knee pads if you have them on. If you're going slow, you'll scrap the caps on your pads and be fine. If you're at speed, like longboarding down a hill, you'll slide some distance but still should remain fine.

You also can break your collarbone when you fall over with your arm outstretched. That was my first semi serious injury. Was pretty stupid, went downhill and then into mud and the wheels dug in. Board stopped almost instantaneously, I didn't. A friend broke his ankle trying to be too stylish. Kickflipped 3 stairs and tried stomping it down. Stomped too hard on the second attempt with his heel hanging over the edge of the deck a bit, and totally messed up his achilles.
@nedgey

So you still use your wrist and arm to briefly hit the ground first and enter into the roll? If you just tuck your arms in and roll what's to stop your head from hitting the ground?
@matbroomfield
@matbroomfield 10 лет назад
Yes, you use your arm as suspension so that the force doesn't smash your body. You just keep your head up (if you're rolling backwards) or to the side if you roll sidewards. It's more about having the awareness that a floppy head can smash into the ground.

Good video because this advice is universal. I broke my wrist while playing basketball and it was because i tried to catch myself and if i would have rolled to my side it would have been a totally different situation

1:50 is EXACTLY how I broke my wrist. Slipped out on a quarter pipe and tried to catch myself. Lesson learned.

I also found that when the board slides out from under me, I would flail my legs into the air and try to roll on my back so I don’t land on my tail bone (which hurts like hell) I would also put my arms around my head like a cage and try to land on my side. It’s all about trying not to land on your tail bone and head and wrists when the board slides out from you. I don’t know if I’m wrong (I am definitely no expert) but this works for me. Hope you find this helpful

Avoiding impact on the bone tips (knees, elbows, tailbone) is definitely one of your main objectives, and protecting your skull is goal number 1. My concern with your technique is that you still land hard, rather than trying to diminish the speed of the impact. But if it works for you, then fantastic, and let's hope that you don't NEED to protect fall all that often! :-) Happy skating!

Very helpful instruction. Despite reference to martial artists, I'm very happy to learn crucial and practical techniques from this clip. Now I can explain to my friends how to be prepared while practising muay thai.

As I understand it, Muay Thai fighters don't do many throws, but it always helps to be prepared.

Mat Broomfield Muaythai fighters often sweep their opponents off the floor with low leg kick. My friend was similarly swept with a low kick, and him being inexperienced, tried to protect himself by thrusting his hand against the canvas floor. Just like @48" on the clip above. He suffered a fractured wrist bone.

Well today I was riding my penny board and I lost control and fell super bad...I was just riding it not doing any tricks or anything and I fell. So I scratched my hand, my 2 elbows, my arm and my shoulder got like a rug burn type of bruise...luckily it was just scratches and I didn't have any serious injuries. But this doesn't mean I'm giving up on riding my penny board because its like part of the practice you know this stuff happens...so I'm still determined to keep practicing because I've had my penny board for 1 day already and I still wanna get better. So for all the new skaters out there, you are gonna face difficulties and maybe even fall but don't let that make you give up because that's why you have to practice. Even professionals fall but most don't give up because they know those things happen.

Osvaldo Ornelas Half of all skate injuries happen the first week of skateboarding. A Penny is not a board known for injuries, but I guess if you hit something in the road, you can still get thrown.

+Mat Broomfield it's harder to control because it's quite small and it also can get very fast, i think it's easy to injure yourself on these

Any tips on landing backwards? Like if you really just hit the tail of your board and flip over so the only choice is hurting your wrist or your butt...
@matbroomfield
@matbroomfield 5 лет назад
I ALWAYS wear wrist guards so then you can land on your hands quite hard. However, if you don't have any, you need to kind of collapse your legs so that you crumple to the floor, then rather than having your hands at a right angle under your shoulders (which can break your wrists and dislocate your shoulder) , you keep them down 45 degrees by your side with your elbow straightish. Now you're going to let your hands hit the ground first to absorb some of the force. Make sure you tuck your chin in so your head doesn't whip back and break your skull! Wear a helmet if you're smart!

Falling correctly is just natural for me. My body naturally does the roll and I fall mostly on my side and roll. Remember to tuck your head in guys. Took an extremely nasty slam down a 5 stair just yesterday and my whole left arm and hip and foot is torn up. I didn't inspect the spot very well and I took on a lot of speed, cleared it and ended up landing perfectly in a crack and my board literally stopped in a nanosecond and I FLEW forward and slid. My whole left side is banged up but the injuries by themselves are minor and they are spred out so that lets me know I fell correctly. I fell and slid so hard my left shoelace split into 5 pieces lol
