Feathering light is a basic technique that many professional photographers use in order to gain more control over their lighting. Feathering light is one of those things that can be confusing at first, but once mastered is a great way to level up your lighting.
In this video photographer, Ab Sesay goes through the differences from setting your light to a traditional 45-degree angle to a 90-degree angle to slightly past 90-degree and then to a more extreme angle even past that. Ab Sesay also demonstrates how the differences between lights such as the Photek Spotlighter, Profoto 3ft RF Octa Softbox, Profoto Beauty Dish, and Profoto Magnum reflector, and how each differs in the results you get when feathering.
Ab Sesay also discusses some best practices, such as the type of light stand he recommends using. The use of a light meter for consistent exposures and using flags and V-Flats to control bounce and the overall contrast of the lighting sets.
Get ready for a deep dive, and one of the most detailed videos about feathering light.

Great in depth video on feathering. You can get a similar look to heavy feathering by using flags or v-flats between the light and background or subject. To me it keeps the light softer and controls spill a bit better. It is my preferred method. Either way you get really nice look with the dark light dark effect.

Hey Olaus. Your Welcome, and thank you for the great feedback. Hmmmm can you let me know what the time code was for the old light source? Was it this video?

Ab, I totally enjoyed this video. Thank you! I'd love to know more about how you made a flag for the ceiling? What kind of grip did you use?
@AbSesayPhoto
@AbSesayPhoto Год назад
Hey Jenny, I used a 4x4 Floppy connected to a grip head that is on a rolling stand.

@@AbSesayPhoto Thanks for the reply! Perfect for us low-ceiling-ed photographers. And I'm a +1 for a stand video! I'd even love a video on best practices with stands and grip equipment - there's definitely a wrong way to use some of it. Thank you! I hope that you'll always educate. You have a gift for it.

feathered octa umbrella vs octa softbox with grid 🤔. great comprehensive review!!
@AbSesayPhoto
@AbSesayPhoto Год назад
Depends on the umbrellas. But I wouldn't feather the octa with a grid past 90 degrees. The Grids are designed to eliminate edge spill with is what we are going after. But you'll still get interesting light.
@photo2000
@photo2000 Год назад
@@AbSesayPhoto oh... i was just posing the different options... grids kinda help solve the background spill... but the feathering does that PLUS changes how light hits subject... different tools for different effects 👍

I'm a little bit confused, to create a sliver of light, could you not use a strip box instead? This is an honest question and I appreciate you answering it. Thank you
@AbSesayPhoto
@AbSesayPhoto Год назад
Hey Stefan You can absolutely use a Strip softbox, and now I wish I demoed one here because you can feather it as well. The goal is to be able to achieve different styles of light by not just sticking with the traditional 45-degree angle, but experimenting with using any source that you have. It is not about getting a strip of light, but controlling the edge of the light source. This a really a great question.
