How to Feed Small Terrestrial Newts/Salamanders

Hey everyone, TheSalamanderMan back with another video! This time I'm going to tackle a pretty important subject, and that is what to feed new morphs and how to feed them! Small newts and salamanders are so tiny and fragile that caring for them can be a big challenge and hopefully this video can help address some concerns that other keepers may have. In a hobby that seems to have so little information at times, my aim is to help keep our hobby strong with information and raise awareness about these awesome animals!

Thanx sally man! I was just gifted a tiny red back ,bringing me here. Never heard of white worms, I'm sure he'll love em. Oh, do these guys go off feed just prior to brumation? Would a frig be too cold for brumation, I'd imagine not this little guys from Michigan. It gets pretty cold here. Any info on over wintering is greatly appreciated, its now late October here. Pretty sure this guy should be deep in his burrow now or very soon?

Hi! A fridge should be fine if it's set to the right temperature. Depending on how cold it is, it might eat very little or stop altogether so you would have try and see what happens. As for as overwintering, I think this article might be able to provide some info. Quick question, is that a New Hampshire orange Salamander you have as a pet? I forget their true name, but I used to search for them when Hiking up in NH as a kid. Now I am a pet owner for a much more common breed of Salamander originating form Massachusetts. I love those orange ones though, ever since I first came across my first one on Mount Monadnock as a wicked young kid.

@TheSalamanderWilds
@TheSalamanderWilds 3 года назад
Hi! No, Repashy would not work. Repashy is a powder and not only is not formulated for newts/salamanders, the newt will just simply ignore it. It needs to go after live food so you'll definitely want to use the springtails.

HI, I had 5 eastern newts outside this summer and when I emptied the tank to move them inside, I found some baby newts (still aquatic with gills). Now I have some very small morphed efts, but they are not red, they look like tiny adults. When do I move them to a terrestrial tank? @TheSalamanderWilds

Hello! As soon as the eastern newt has morphed into the eft, its ready to go completely terrestrial so I would move them into the terrestrial setup. Just make sure to mist the new enclosure so it stays moist, but not dripping wet.

Hello great video! Are blood worms good for newts?
@TheSalamanderWilds
@TheSalamanderWilds 3 года назад
Hi! Yes, blood worms are a great food source for newts and salamanders. However, these are better used for aquatic or semi aquatic species. Using live foods for terrestrial species will yield much better results since the animal will go by sight. The eastern newt shown in the video is still terrestrial so blood worms won't be used until it matures and goes back into the water.

@TheSalamanderWilds
@TheSalamanderWilds 2 года назад
Hi! It's normal for a newt or salamander to not eat for a little while after morphing and moving onto land. The animal is going through a lot of changes and is still adjusting. Keep trying though! How big is this new morph? Usually spring tails are used for smaller species like the eastern newt in this video. Also, I personally wouldn't use meal worms as the hard exoskeleton could be hard to digest. Small earth worms would definitely be better if they're an appropriate size.

@TheSalamanderWilds 4 года назад
I suppose it's hard to say, but due to their toxicity I'd say they have a pretty good survival rate.
@swayback7375
@swayback7375 Год назад
Survival rate for basically all reptiles and amphibians is very low! That’s why most of them reproduce in such high numbers! It just depends on when you start counting. They often lay eggs by the hundreds and even thousands but many are in decline. Simple math of 2 breeding adults making hundreds of eggs per year would mean we would be overrun with them, but with almost all species declining you can assume the survival rate is in the single digits.

Would blood worms work as well?
@TheSalamanderWilds
@TheSalamanderWilds 4 года назад
Hey! I wouldn't recommend using blood worms for any terrestrial species/phase newts or salamanders. Blood worms work well for aquatic animals, but terrestrial newts like the one in this video will go by sight most of the time and are tempted by live food like the white worms. The blood worms will take a lot more work to train the newt to go for food that isn't moving and may not be successful at all.

@TheSalamanderWilds
@TheSalamanderWilds 3 года назад
Hi! From what I've read, it's normal for them to not eat for a little while after morphing since it's a big physiological change. That said, I would keep trying earth worms or night crawlers, maybe chopped if they seem to big. Crickets may be too fast moving at the moment and guppies aren't really a good source of food for salamanders.

@TheSalamanderWilds
@TheSalamanderWilds 3 года назад
Hi! Well it depends. The one in this video is very small and in its terrestrial stage, so shrimp and minnows wouldn't work here. As for aquatic adults, shrimp are usually too quick so it's not recommended to depend on this as a food source. Minnows are also much to fast for newts to eat and they are unhealthy for newts and salamanders and may contain parasites - I wouldn't risk trying to feed something like this to your newt.
