I found one this morning - it crossed the road into our yard with uber curious cats - so I picked him and moved him into the creek on our property, hopefully away from the cats. I did consider keeping it for a pet but had no clue how to care for them till watching your video just now. Oh well - he's better off in the wild and being free - since he's not domesticated. Thanks for the education. Now I feel a little bit smarter for a day or two, which is usually when I forget stuff - LoL.

I found my tiger salamander a few months ago.. walked right into the back of my restaurant where she had no business being in lol (not to mention that they shouldn't even be in Southwest Idaho). Thank goodness I was closing up for the night, or else I might have accidentally stepped on her (?). Anyway, she looked like she was starving and hurt, her skin was ashy and cracking. Took her home, got a terrarium setup, watched videos like this to make sure I didn't mess anything up. Couldn't get her to eat for the first 3 months.. I've had her for about 5 months now, and she's looking super healthy and she's actually active. Anyway, thanks for making vids like this. I was able to save her life, and now I have a pet for the next 20 years or so lol

I had 2 of them as pets, named 'Taco' and 'Burrito'! I fed mine a variety of small foods, such as waxworms, mealworms, crickets, etc. I also made sure they had access to other, larger food sources, like live Fathead and Shad minnows - these were in a shallow l'il container that I'd fill with water, since the 'manders seemed to love catching their own food! Also, one day I had brought home some live pinkie mice for my Water Dragon; I set the clear plastic container down next to the Tiger Salamander habitat. As soon as Taco and Burrito saw those mice they lost their little Salamander minds - kind of like me at a Las Vegas buffet! So, I attempted to put one next to their food dish, but one of 'em literally jumped up and grabbed it. They each ate 2 of them... And oooh did they grow to be huge! At the time (well before the Internet, etc) the only people who knew anything about them were the Herpetologists at Brookfield Zoo - so we took their advice, and they said it was fine to feed them the pinkies. Those Salamanders lived for a long, long time; at least 15 years if not longer than that!

Easily 30 yards to the nearest shade by 9 am. This video is a big help. I work at a fish hatchery, and we breed walleye in an old nuclear power cooling canal. We have to relocate hundreds of salamanders each year because they eat our fry. I got a male and female from the canal, and I have them in a large exo terra vivarium. Helpful video to learn what to feed em

To be fair, when my bearded dragon gets into feeding mode, she eats fingers too. I didn't realize beardie bites could be so painful! It can rip the skin off. Anyways, salamanders are super cool. We used to get a lot of water in our basement and we got spotted salamanders down there all the time. They were super cute. It was kinda like having pets that I wasn't responsible for the care of lol

I have a small spotted salamander that I found underneath the bed lining of a truck. he was covered in dust and was super dry. I would release him but I have no idea where he came from and it is very very hot and dry where I live. I keep the substrate damp and I even have a water dish in there and he is not wet to the touch. he is dry and kinda sticky. he eats just fine and is full of energy. should I be worried that he is never wet?

I just found one literally at my doorstep! the poor thing :( he was covered in dirt and dust!! my brother in law called me and said "come down quick! there's a lizard", but I knew right away when I saw that it was a salamander lmao, I have never seen one before in real life, and I had no idea we have them here, but apparently we do, it's been raining a lot lately for days here in BC Canada, and it's fall, so the weather is getting colder...I put him in a little 5 gallon tank for now, just to make sure he's OK and I might release him back, we might go to a creek or somewhere undisturbed, I don't feel comfortable putting him back out in the yard, I live on a residential street, but there are tiny patches of land on our streets where there is protected wildlife creeks etc. He hasn't eaten anything I've offered, not like I had anything very appetizing on hand, just dried mealworms and crickets, I soaked them and cut them into pieces because this salamander is very very small, the size of my finger, so I wasn't sure how he would be able to eat, and I also collected some aphids from outside, I heard they don't eat the first few days so we'll see! He was right at the door it was crazy! we could have stepped on him and there were cats and raccoons walking around! Had to cup him first to protect and eventually I put him in a tank and set up a temp habitat. I knew he was water based because I've kept garden snails for a year, and just instinctively I knew he needed a water dish, and cocofibre, good thing I had all this on hand lol! luckily he came to MY doorstep instead of some crazy idiot who would have tortured him or kept him in a dry box. I'm an animal freak so it's like he knew lol, or he came to my house to get some taste of the baby snails that have errupted all over! My snails have bred like crazy outside!!

Unfortunately, even with all the research and care I gave it, it didnt live very long, at most a month or two. I can only assume it was poisoned by the grease it was sitting in for who knows how long. My ma named it Grease Lightning.

TheSkyIsOnFireKF13 i like to here that. Little update, I got the coco fiber and a piece of cork bark to hide under and a bowl of water at ground level. First night he went into the water a few times and same the second night. Last night he didn't come out at all so I found a tiny baby worm in the bag of original soil I took him home in and cleaned it off and he actually ate it! I had to move the wood because he wouldn't come out. Tried a small meal worm with no luck. Need to find a place that has the actual worms. "Side note" my girlfriend hates it and everything that comes with it like worms . If I was to wait for a warmer day say over 50 degrees, could I possibly release him back where I found him?
@MEEP1000LPS
@MEEP1000LPS 6 лет назад
you probably should wait till spring at this point it might shock him to put him back now see if you have a pet value near you they have meal worms and use tweezers to feed him he might not want to eat bc he is already stored up for hibernation dont be scared about the hiding he does that in the wild they can be very elusive mine never comes out and try not to handle him he might drop his tail

So, I have a few questions. Please don't get mad if it's dumb, I'm fairly new to the amphibian world. 1. Is it alright to use bottled spring water? I hear people saying so, but I trust you more to confirm if that's ok. 2. Are salamanders ok to be kept outside? I have limited space but a very nice shed outside that would probably only be a few degrees colder and is much much more convenient for me. 3. Are salamanders ok first time pets? (Well, other than a few cats and a dog. You know what I mean by first time pets) 4. Would a salamander be ok with no heat source? I have one but I'm not sure if it's necessary. Again, sorry if it's a stupid question. LOVE your channel and have an amazing day!

If you live in the country (like we do), you don’t have to worry about chlorinated water, BUT, you do need to worry about your softened water...if you use a water softener. The water will coat(?) their skin causing them to not absorb any and they will swell up and die. I had that happen to a couple of tree frogs before I found out why. Use natural spring water for your amphibians.

Hi, my dad was at a farm a few towns over when he found what I think is a smallmouth salamander. It’s about 30 degrees outside on average this time of year and he brought it to our house. Your video is helpful, how would you recommend caring for it? Right now we’re focusing on keeping it damp and allowing it to burrow but have no clue. Would it be better to set it free near us? We live in a city as opposed to wear it was found and I’m a bit worried. Do they eat all winter? Thanks for any help

I have 5 spotted salamanders trapped outside my basement bedroom window. It gets so hot out with a lack of rain that they dehydrate and they try to conserve their moister by hiding under the rocks. Every other day I have been dousing them with ice mountain drinking water to keep them moist and alive. I don't know if that's what I should be doing but they're making it so far. I believe they have a lack of food and I've been thinking about moving them into my own home so I can take care of them easier. But I don't really know how big the tank should be with 5 juvenile salamanders. I've been researching and I have noticed 1-2 salamanders are housed in a ten gallon tank. I've been thinking a ten galleon tank might be a bit too small. And I'm not sure how much water I should be giving them and if the water is safe for them to use. I don't think these salamanders can make it through the winter with just those rocks as they typically get coated in snow and there is no place deeper to go. I would love some advice since I'm interested in saving these salamanders to the best of my ability and any advice would help save them too.

The best thing you can do is remove them from the window well and let them go near a pond. You're right, they'll just die down there so they need your help

Any advice on what to feed a baby salamander? I got pellets that are highly rated but I can’t tell if they eat it.

Amazing. Do salamanders show any level of friendship towards you like a turtle does? Do they get to know you and like to be held? I saw a giant salamander in a HK restaurant in a water tank and on the menu. I wanted to buy it and take it home to save it.

When it comes to skin patterns no tiger salamander (native to North America) is identical. I like the barred tiger salamander but I think yours are eastern variants. Notice at 3:00 = chomp!. Yes they feed by sensing motion so they will grab on to anything.

Hello! I recently found a tiger salamander in my window well. I was wondering what I should do with the little guy. Im going to leave a tub of water in the window well so it can soak.

I have 3 pet salamanders because a guy i know came back for vacation and his basement was flooded and there was several salamanders down in that basement but he was about to kill them when I stepped in and took them home and now they live in a 75 gallon tank and get fed a wide range of food

Is there a maximum depth of substrate that I can use. Would it collapse if it were too deep?

I kept these as kids, love them, but I feel like it is to find captive bred ones instead of wild caught, which is a shame. The ones I had as a kid I actually bought as axolotls from a Walmart and they metamorphosed.
