Tips for Breeding Newts and Salamanders --- And why it's Important!

Hey everyone! I decided to revisit another older video now that the channel has picked up a bit and made a more clear and concise, more in depth video on the benefits of breeding your newts and salamanders! This video also addresses the importance of participating in captive breeding. If you are able, I strongly recommend breeding your animals to keep the hobby going strong. Breeding our newts or salamanders is no easy task and it should be no secret either. We need to reduce the dependency on wild caught animals and help conserve those populations as well.
*Oddly enough, a towards the end there is a point where some audio gets cut off mid sentence.

I just chose this video to comment on because it was your newest one. Love what your doing here. I breed dart frogs and newts, and there is definitely not enough people involved in the newt hobby. Keep them up! Great content! You should do a care video on the torosa. Interested to see how you do it.

Glad you've found the info useful! Yeah it's quite unfortunate that salamanders aren't as popular as the other hobbies, but I think that makes the salamander hobby a bit more interesting. A lot of people don't know about them and tend to be amazed after realizing what they are.

I saved a western tiger, this year, in August. It was doing its migratory march into a farmers field during harvest. He would've gotten chopped up if I was biking by that day. He's quite big now.

Getting ready to breed these newts is exactly the same for snakes, create a “winter”, empty stomach, both of these acts creates a breeding response in snakes. 💕💕

excellent video buddy. if you have any information to share about feeding small efts, i would really appreciate it. currently have some alpine newt efts and feeding them springtails, but feel like they need more varied food. great video

Funny you should mention feeding an eft. I'll be doing an update video soon on my Eastern newt eft and discuss feeding efts actually. Springtails are great. You can try dwarf white isopods too, but I think so far white worms are my go to. I hand feed mine so it's easier to see when my eft eats.

I breed eastern newts and cought the adults in a pond behind my house. I do not keep or sell any of my animals and I usually care for the larvae until the eft stage, and realease them around the pond. I also sometimes do this with some eggs and larvae as i cannot always provide attention and food for the constant demand, and i simply let them devolop in the pond.

I finally found some eastern newts! I have four females, and one male - should I balance out the gender, or focus on getting more females per male??? I have a ton of tanks ready for a large scale breeding project
@TheSalamanderWilds
@TheSalamanderWilds 5 лет назад
Males can be aggressive when courting the females, so it's probably best to have an equal number of males to females or more females than males. If courtship becomes too aggressive, then it may be necessary to separate them temporarily. So actually, your current ratio seems fine. And congrats on the new newts! That's awesome!

For spotted salamanders and stuff you could just build an outdoor habitat. Like a little area with a wall around that salamanders cannot climb up or dig under and add water. That way you don't need to simulate anything and they breed on their own.
@TheSalamanderWilds
@TheSalamanderWilds 2 года назад
I have to slightly disagree here. Most keepers probably don't have access to build an outdoor habitat, but furthermore - building a pond for spotted salamanders probably isn't practical solution. They only enter the water during breeding season - late winter/early spring when vernal pools fill up with rain water or melted snow/ice. Those pools are temporary and the spotted salamanders would live underground, away from the water. As amazing as it would be, I'm not sure many keepers have the resources to build an entire vernal pool habitat unless its naturally part of the property.
@Mothobius
@Mothobius 2 года назад
@@TheSalamanderWilds No I mean like this. Capture some adult salamanders in breeding season and make an outdoor area for them with a barrier they can't escape. Like a low wall or something that they cannot climb. Add a little water area in the ground like a kiddie pool or something. They will lay their eggs there if they have already mated earlier. And next season release them into the outdoor habitat during breeding season so they can experience the natural factors required to breed. It's like they are in nature since they live outside.

I own a 30 gallon aquarium with several other native species including bluegill and freshwater mussels and a water lily. My tank has a very rocky aqua scape. I am wondering if I can safely add eastern newts. Thanks.

Hi! Sounds like a nice setup, however I would highly advise against adding newts here. Bluegills can definitely injure the Eastern newts. There are a few breeders, but they're definitely not common. Certainly a hard species to find that isn't wild caught. I've seen the black chin variant for sale though, so maybe keep an eye out for these and give it a go. Very beautiful salamanders, one of my favorite as well. Would be great to see these more commonly bred.

@TheSalamanderWilds
@TheSalamanderWilds 4 года назад
Hey there! Well, this depends on how old your fire belly newt is. If its still an eft, it needs to be kept terrestrially for quite some time. Also, it is known that newly introduced individuals may refuse water for a period of time as well. Check out this article: www.caudata.org/cc/species/Cynops/C_orientalis.shtml

TheSalamanderMan Hi thanks for your help! And so do i have to put the frozen blood worms on the dry area or inside the water inorder for the fire belly newt eats? Thank you!
@TheSalamanderWilds
@TheSalamanderWilds 4 года назад
@@francisrusli5894 So the food also depends on the whether they are aquatic or terrestrial. If the newt is aquatic, frozen blood worms will work great. If the newt is being kept terrestrial, you'll need to use another food source. Live food works very well for terrestrial newts,salamanders. I recommend using white worms and isopods.

TheSalamanderMan are cave salamanders hard to keep
@TheSalamanderWilds
@TheSalamanderWilds 4 года назад
@@skittles08sd Well, it all depends on if you're able to simulate the environment they come from. If you're referring to Eurycea lucifuga, which is in the same family as the Two lined salamander and Long tailed salamander, I suspect it may be a semi aquatic species but I don't know for certain. It is a lungless salamander so the skin needs to be kept moist and I don't believe this species is widely bred, so legally obtaining one could be difficult.

hello. I'm looking to get a spotted salamander online but I wanna make sure its a trusted site. ive been looking at reviews and I cant find any overall great sites. do u have any suggestions or recommendations of what sights to use? Also. do u have a site u sell on?
@TheSalamanderWilds
@TheSalamanderWilds 4 года назад
Hi there! The best site that I recommend is caudata.org . There are a ton of reputable breeders on this site and it is my go to for info, help and anything newt/salamander related. However, as far as a spotted salamander is concerned, you may have a difficult time finding one that is captive bred, let alone legally caught and I personally don't advocate for the sale of wild caught animals. Unfortunately, most of the sites that you can quickly Google sell wild caught animals, which damages wild populations. The spotted salamander is a difficult species to breed due to a complex courtship and breeding process that is very difficult to replicate in captivity. On caudata.org , it has been documented to have been captive bred a few times though. And also, I don't currently sell any animals of my own. Hope this helps!

Thanks so much! I was looking at websites and by any chance do u know if snakesatsunset are good? I saw that they sell salamanders.
@TheSalamanderWilds
@TheSalamanderWilds 4 года назад
@@rydermatthews9740 Personally, I don't recommend it. By looking at the site, they're advertising species that are rarely captive bred with the exception of the fire salamander. It's going to be tough to find someone that participates in the captive breeding of spotted salamanders unfortunately. It's really a shame too. It would be nice if more people participated in this hobby and in the captive breeding of species that are suffering from over collection in the wild.

I don't think moonlight would be an issue during rain and cloud cover. The idea is to simulate natural seasonal temperature changes. It's possible to create a rain chamber in the manner that is used for red eyed tree frogs, but I personally don't have experience doing something like that.

@TheSalamanderWilds
@TheSalamanderWilds 4 года назад
Hello there! I would highly suggest reading this article: www.caudata.org/cc/species/Ambystoma/A_tigrinum.shtml . Tiger salamanders are part of the Ambystomid family, like spotted salamanders. Both are difficult to breed due to a complex breeding process that starts with a migration to a vernal pool. Simulating this process in captivity is hard, but it can be done. I would also read this forum post as it documents a successful breeder's process: www.caudata.org/forum/showthread.php?t=52763 . If you're truly set on breeding them, I wish you much luck and success!
