Hey everyone, back with another care guide and this time aquatic plants are the topic! Aquatic plants play an important role in the life of our newts and salamanders and choosing the right plants can be tricky. I made this video in hopes of helping you choose the right plant for the right salamander. Newts and salamanders are very unique from one another and plants may play a different role for your newt or salamander depending on the species. Lighting and substrate for plants can be quite confusing as well, so I've touched those topics too. If you enjoyed the video, like and share and comment down below! Let me know what other types of guides you would like to see in the future!

my daughter caught a bunch of newts like the one at the beginning of your video. we setup a 10 gal. aquarium for them. It has been about 2 months and they seem to be doing well. I want to add some natural plans to replace the plastics we started with. In the light, the newts are beautifully colored. When the light is less bright, they looked camouflaged and the colors become really muted.

@TheSalamanderWilds 4 года назад
That's awesome! Yeah, the lighting can really bring out their intricate coloration and if you can get some java moss, the newts would definitely appreciate it!

Do you use flourish tabs or anything like that ? I have 2 axolotl in a 74g bow front..
@TheSalamanderWilds
@TheSalamanderWilds 3 месяца назад
Nope, no tabs or fertilizers/chemicals of any kind. The only thing I do is use nutrient rich aquatic soil and an LED aquarium plant light. I also keep my newts in a garage by a window, so everything is exposed to natural light and temperatures.

I have long toe salamanders that prefer more land as adults do you have a species like that and could you do a video on there enclosure

Hi! Those are really awesome Ambystomids! I'm only keeping Eastern newts at the moment, but I'm currently looking into doing a care guide on spotted salamanders, which should be similar care to long toed salamanders. Personally, aquatic animals are much easier to keep than terrestrial.

Hello, I love newts and salamander, I really like this video you uploaded. And Chinese hobbyists can't watch these excellent videos through youtube. Can I reprint your videos on Chinese websites?
@TheSalamanderWilds
@TheSalamanderWilds 4 года назад
Hey, I'm glad you like the videos. I understand access is strict in China and I would love to help the hobby there as well. Please forgive my hesitation, however, as I am unsure of what you mean by "reprint" and I'm not sure legally what that would mean either.

@@TheSalamanderWilds I meant I may download your videos and post them on a Chinese website which is a Chinese equivalent of RU-vid. Please let me know your thoughts on me doing this, I have to receive your permission before actually taking this step. Thanks.

@@user-vn8nw1ws5u Hello, so I gave some more thought about this and as of now I'm not sure this is the best way to go about it. I don't know what sort of implications this would have. I'd like to do some research on the matter myself and see if there may be some other solution as I do want to help. Respectfully, for now I would have to say no.

Dude your footage is so good! Can you tell me which kind of cameras you use like for the salamander journal? and the cameras you use for filming your tanks Also not part if the camera topic : Your Spanish ribbed newts are so lively and the swim so much! I want to know why because mine never really moves so can you recommend anything
@TheSalamanderWilds
@TheSalamanderWilds 2 года назад
Hey, for the cameras, these are what I use. I did a video on this topic I think you should check out. I may do another similar video in the future: Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra - UHD60 (4k) GoPro Hero 9 Nikon 5200 DSLR with Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 18-55mm lens As for the newts, I no longer own these, but I think usually the presence of food gets them going.
@zaac2999
@zaac2999 2 года назад
@@TheSalamanderWilds what editor do you use too? And did you use a usb or something like that to download the footage and edit it?
@TheSalamanderWilds
@TheSalamanderWilds 2 года назад
@@zaac2999 So I'm actually using Davinci Resolve 17 for all of my video editing. It's free to use too. All the footage is taken by my Nikon camera or my Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra camera. After I get my footage, I connect to my computer and just copy it over and then I'm able to import into the video editor.
@zoraac4678
@zoraac4678 2 года назад
@@TheSalamanderWilds What is the total cost of the cameras?
@TheSalamanderWilds
@TheSalamanderWilds 2 года назад
@@zoraac4678 So my total cost was nearly $2000 for everything, but I was able to get some of these things during sales so they weren't normal price. Since I use my phone as the main camera for most of my videos, my phone cost $600.00 at the time, but normal price wad $1200. The GoPro I believe is nearly 500.00 normal price, but again - I paid less at the time of purchase.

Where can I buy captive bred adult eastern newts? I have an eastern newt that ive kept for 4 years and now im in a different state and id like to add some more for him.
@TheSalamanderWilds
@TheSalamanderWilds 4 года назад
Unfortunately not too many people breed eastern newts, let alone successfully raise the tiny newly morphed efts. You should check caudata.org. There's a lot of reputable breeders on that site.

I got mine from reptilecity.com . a lot of other online reptile retailers will have an amphibian section you can find all sorts of newts and salamanders

Is super glue safe for eastern newts
@TheSalamanderWilds
@TheSalamanderWilds 4 года назад
Unless it says it's non toxic and that it's safe for aquariums, super glue is not safe for them. Aquarium sealant may better suit your needs. What sort of project are you working on?

Black Dimond Blasting sand is $10 for 50lbs. Doesn't make a mess. Is black so it looks great & doesnt cause harm to any animals. Even those that like to dig. Having Malaysian trumpet snails in your tank will keep the sand aerated and so it wont compact. They are like aquarium gophers. Using root tabs at the root will give the plant all the nutrients it will need. More research on keeping aquariums would help
@TheSalamanderWilds
@TheSalamanderWilds 3 года назад
So a couple of things - the trumpet snails aren't compatible with most newts and salamanders. Newts require consistent cool temps below the 70s to thrive and this below what the snails can tolerate. I also wouldn't trust using root tabs or other fertilizers with newts and salamanders - their skin is very sensitive to changed in water quality and experimenting like this isn't worth the risk since a lot of these chemicals can be harmful. The info in this video is based on the perspective of keeping newts and salamanders and a lot of traditional aquarium methods aren't suitable for these animals.

Amano Shrimp will eat ALL the algae growing on your moss and other plants
@TheSalamanderWilds
@TheSalamanderWilds 3 года назад
True, but newts/salamanders require consistently cool temps that aren't really compatible with amano shrimp - especially if you're putting newts/salamanders through a winter cooling.
