If you use a rubber hammer, the spike caps won't get destroyed so easily

If you have clay. soil the spikes break up when trying to installing the spikes - Better to use 3 ft long galvanized pipe and a mall hammer to first make the hole then no-bounce hammer to install the spikes

I use a little drill auger, and put the spikes down in he ground about 6 inches.

This is not how you fertilize a tree. These spikes are gimmicks aimed at people who don't want to put any work into fertilizing. Not that fertilizing should be that hard, but spikes don't work and there are plenty of arborists and other people in the industry that will tell you that. Fertilizer should be broadcast evenly throughout the critical root zone, meaning from the drip line in, all around the tree. Spikes just concentrate fertilizer in one spot and will not feed the roots properly. If your tree is planted on turf, and you regularly fertilize said turf, odds are your tree needs no extra fertilization.

You don't need those caps to drive in the spikes. Take your garden hose and turn it on. Push the hose into the ground until it digs a hole. Drop in the spike. done.
