I have over 200 trees and needed a quick, effective and cheap method to fertilize them. I found these Miracle Grow tree fertilizer spikes on Amazon and the reviews were fantastic. I bought 10 packages for evergreens and 10 for deciduous trees. The fertilizer analysis for the evergreens is 12-6-12 and for the flowering trees is 15-5-10. I tried to install them using the supplied plastic cap, but quickly learned how ineffective this is. I put together some ideas and came up with a great idea by putting a pilot hole in the ground first. Watch me demonstrate this new tool. I was able to install all 240 spikes in about 8 hours.

I use a crowbar. Little jab with it perfect hole about 6-8” deep. Drop in the spike and done. Crowbar I use is about 5 foot tall. No bending until dropping in the spike. Make doubly sure no underground power lines are present. Nice video !

Wait till the ground is saturated (wet) then insert the stakes. Works every time. I have a flower bush that blossomed by inserting 8 stakes around the perimeter.👍👍👍👍

Great idea with your pilot hole tool. The fertilizer spikes would always break using the plastic cap, whether the ground was dry or wet.

LOVED your video! I could not understand the directions on the package and even called the company. Even they couldn't fully explain it to me. YOUR video was easy to understand and included extra tips that the company did not give me. GREAT JOB!

I remove mulch and then gently use a crow bar so I don't poke holes in my underground drip lines/sprinklers, etc.

I was considering trying those but if you ask most tree experts or arborists they say these don’t really work all that well. They’re tempting because it’s easy to do. I would just spread fertilizer evenly all around the drip zone. If it’s in a lawn, they’re already getting fertilized from fertilizing you’re lawn.
@acreagelife9644

So any fertilizer will do?
@mplslawnguy3389

@@acreagelife9644 As with fertilizing anything, get a soil test to see if you're lacking anything and pick a fertilizer from there. For instance, the soils in my state almost universally have enough phosphorus in them, so I would go with something like a 12-0-3, or a 10-0-5 or whatever. If you're hell bent on fertilizing your trees, drill many holes with an auger around the root zone and evenly distribute a granular fertilizer in all the holes, this may take some math. Like I said though, if you're already fertilizing the turf around those trees, they are getting fertilized so I wouldn't worry about it so much. People always overlook PH as well. You can't fix a struggling tree when the PH is out of whack because the plant will never be able to uptake whatever nutrient you think is lacking. Extension websites are a great source of information on this stuff. Start with the ones in your State.

Get rid of hammer and survey spike and get a steel digging spike. It weighs just enough to usually make a perfect hole for the spike in one down thrust in favorable dirt.

Water the area where you are going to apply the spikes. The will go in with just a few blows from the hammer.

How bad is it going to be if I put these within 6" of the main stem? What do you do when the tree is young and the roots don't reach 2' out?
@acreagelife9644
@acreagelife9644 Год назад
6" seems a close and the roots are at risk of burning from the fertilizer. When the tree is young, the roots may not reach out very far, especially if the tree was recently planted.

In another video they recommended one spike for every two inches of tree width..So a tree seven inches across would get 4 spikes..Live on a golf course where they think only water will keep the trees healthy..Never move into a HOA community.

You don't have to hammer it into the ground most especially if you have hard soil. Why not make a small hole the size of that spike and just insert those deep enough. 🤔🤨😏

The door is directly to the kitchen aswell so but we like to keep it clean piling poop and kitchen scraps around the trees in the back corners. We have an old drained pond we compost in but never used or turned the compost. Could probably just spread my compost and fix my pond?

Can the tree spikes be placed in the ground in July? In live in the mountains in California and the weather is usually in the high 70's during that time. I failed to place the spikes in the ground in the spring.
@acreagelife9644

Yes, I'm sure it's fine. You will see results next spring and there will be less waiting for the spike to dissolve into the surrounding soil.
