If you ever want to see something that will make a flintknappers heart soar go to Howth, Ireland and head down to the coast. The coastline is made up almost entirely of nodules of black flint.

My issue is sorting for quality. There is so much flint here that it is used in construction and landscaping to fill in or build up the level of the ground... They seem to max out at about 6-8 inches but are often full of holes, most superficial, some not. The shapes are amorphous and don't seem to lend themselves to knapping (from my totally non-expert, early stages of trying to learn perspective). I can walk out to the park and pick up at least 3 types of flint (or high silica rock) that just stick out of the ground, a beatutiful dark black flint, a rusty orange, yellow and red type and a grey type that has all types of other stuff in it. The grey one is super hard to break at all, but when you get it just right you get flakes. The black one is beautiful and feels very workable but seems softer. The rusty one is the softest, but doesn't break as nicely as the black. I want to say you can't get 10 metres out of the parks car park without finding some but the car park itself is also a loose surface bolstered by flint stones. It's everywhere.

Hey man, you did notice the burn mark right? This was an area where natives put their knapping material into fires to make it easier to spall

Charcoal isn’t medicine. I don’t know why people ingest that shit. It’s literally pure carbon. It’s not good for you in any way, shape or form. It doesn’t “detox”, it causes diarrhea. But if you ever want to make charcoal, just get a nice, hot fire going and let the wood burn into coals, (coals will be red hot but not ash), and then scorch the fire with water. After that, let it cool and then gather your charcoal and let it dry.

I once heard that it’s best not to nap around sites that were used by ancients because it is hard to tell the difference between modern mappers and ancient ones. Any truth to that. Just found your channel and I love your content.

I came across a flint knapping site here in Iron County Utah. Found a few points and what looked like a knife blade. I knew it wasn't prehistoric given the amount of modern trash in the vicinity, but I'm wondering if this site isn't from you? 3 peaks recreational area, near iron springs Utah. Knapped here before? If you have, see if you can find some of my pit fired pots on the west side by the firing range. I also have 2 smelters out there if you can find them. One of them still has iron in it.

"What did the ancients use?" Around me that would be quartzite when they had to, otherwise it was whatever they had traded bow wood for from the people that lived further west and northwest.

Generally how much stone do you end up with or does it very significantly from site to site?
@DonnyDustsPaleoTracks
@DonnyDustsPaleoTracks 5 лет назад
I only take what I need in accordance with the state and area rules and regulations. Some places require a permit and can be picked up a land management offices.

That looks a lot like New Mexico but could be anywhere out West. I’m disabled and can’t get out to look for good stone although I know that it’s around. I live in a very volcanic region and should be able to get good stone but someone else is gonna have to collect it for me. I don’t know who that would be.

I’m attempting to find actual chert or flint here in FL, specifically North FL. Problem is, we’re literally a giant block of limestone with mud on top. I’ve tried scouting stuff around me, and found nothing. I have no idea where to find stone here, I have no idea how the Natives survived here to be quite honest.

Good video, but a few questions remain. How do you know if you're on public or private land? Does it make a difference? Is it legal to stop on either public or private land and just start taking their rocks?
@DonnyDustsPaleoTracks
@DonnyDustsPaleoTracks 4 года назад
George Pretnick next thing to do is look on maps and establish boundary lines. Most with Be identified as private or public. If you are on private the area is marked. Roadways often lead to private. BLM requires a stone collects permit as well. So just do you research and if anything ask people.

There's Rules ? For collecting Stones ? Where , When & Why !?!
@DonnyDustsPaleoTracks
@DonnyDustsPaleoTracks 5 лет назад
It’s case by case. I am not talking about picking up a stone...more like a bucket full or truck load. National Forests, state open spaces, state parks, BLM, protected lands, Private and public lands all have varying degrees of permissions and regulations. I cannot recite all of them for all the states, but you don’t want pick up a bucket of Chert, get stopped by some “authority type” and get fined a large sum of money. Do some research and find out, if any rules and regulations exist.
