This is simple genius. My stud finders (I have three) are useless on wood paneling and I've been trying to figure out how to locate the studs without drilling a bunch of holes. I installed the paneling myself (didn't think to take pics of the framing) and the brads are visible in places where the tongue and groove panels come together. Great idea.
You can also put a magnet on a string to find the studs. Some studs are 2 foot center as well so I’d knock 16” from first screw to see if there’s a stud there to make sure it’s 16” center and not 24”.
My walls are wood paneling covered in plaster. My stud finder just malfunctions whenever I try to use it to find studs and the plaster makes it sturdy enough not to be able to reliably tell by pressing in like you showed. Am I just doomed not to be able to hang anything heavier than a plastic clock?
Helpfull but I'm dealing with a job. Have to drill 3 inch hole through 12 inch thick load bearing wall. 12 inch headers etc. I'll try your method. Worst case I'll rip the wood paneling off and find a spot
