Here’s how to set up your marker float step by step: what rod to use, what reel, what line. You must use braid because you want a line without any stretch and then use a mono leader to avoid tangles. To attach the braid to the mono, I show you how to tie the mahin knot. For the marker float, I use the Fox run rig kit to attach the float to a distance lead, using the blood knot.

@@matthewcollinsangler I watch alot of the younger sponsored anglers use a lot of expensive bait and gear and then the previous generation of Fishermen i watch all have one thing in common. Keep it simple. Rigs, bait little and often and most importantly know what you fish over.

@@DJSpannamanUK Hi mate. On the rig front I think you’re right. I caught my first carp 39 years ago from a park lake before carp fishing existed. When I got back into carp fishing 20 years ago everything had changed and I was lost and confused for years. It wasn't until I returned to the basics that I knew and understood as a kid that the results came and I started catching consistently. Top man. Keep it up. Off too winters lake @mannor farm for 48hrs today. It's apparently notoriously hard ad the fish are bigger but I'm gonna find those features and spots and got equipment to fish top, middle and bottom so let's hope they like scopex lol

Brilliant video is this Matthew. Clearly explained and is just what I need as I’m yet to explore spodding. Info on the kit needed and why is useful. Little tips like wetting the line to mitigate windmill loops is excellent. What Id like to see next is how to transition from this marker rod/feature finding to the rod(s) that will then cast out. A detailed video on how to accurate wrap, where to start and finish points so you know exactly that you are casting on to the spot you’ve found. Things like remembering to unclip and reclip and other tips would be useful to someone like me who has never spodded before.

Hello Matt Another of your ardent followers here. No idea what you did in your former life, but your presenting skills are exceptional. You mentioned in reply to another comment about forming loop at end of leader so that same setup can be swapped quickly (loop to loop) between feature finding with lead and spod/spomb. I can understand that no problem, but am I right in thinking this means lead only, with no marker float. Regards Kevin

Hi Kevin, thanks very much for your comments. We really do appreciate you taking the time to write to us. I had a career in engineering before I bought the lake and moved to France and never imagined I’d become a RU-vid presenter! You only need to check out my back catalogue if you're brave and see how bad I was on RU-vid at the beginning lol. Yes, you can only do the loop to loop trick between a leading rod and a spod/spomb. It won’t work with a marker float setup as the loop knot would catch on the line every time and the float would never bob up. If you’ve not used a leading rod before then it’s definitely worth setting one up as they are more sensitive than a traditional marker rod setup. Good for detecting hard to find spots and subtle transitions in the lake bed. Hi Dave, that's great to hear mate, thanks for the feedback. Something I forgot to mention in the video is that it's really important not to over fill the spool with braid in the first place. Especially if you're markering up at long range. Braid flies off the spool much easier than mono anyway so you won't compromise casting distance. Overfilling spools with braid is the number one cause of wind knots. I'd aim for 2 - 4mm (radially) down from the spool lip. Once you've connected your mono leader, tie on a lead and cast that out a few times to settle it in properly. Start with a medium force cast and build up to the max you need for your target venue. If you get any trouble, worse case you might lose a lead (better that than your entire setup!) If you're still getting wind knots then cut some off and try again. Certain reels are better than others. If the line lay if poor then you'll really have to err on the side of caution when filling. Always load braid under tension or things can go horribly wrong! Top video n tips I like the stiff mono idea to stop the tangling . I kinda do the same but only about 4cm as u add that to the size of the marker it makes 1ft in total if that makes sense

Glad you liked it mate. I understand your logic but the only downside I can see with that is that when casting, in the rearwards position, you are going to donk your flights on the deck when you cast (on a full bloodied cast). By having a boom slightly longer than the marker float the lead hits first rather than the flights 🤔

Hi Matt great video, haven't used marker floats myself but I can now see the benift thanks I will be trying this as the water I fish has a lot of very soft spots I can feel my lead sink into the slit when I cast in, i like the Knot not used it myself but will be using it from now looks easy and so tidy, have you any tips on spod baiting, thanks again.

Hi Chris, glad you liked the video! You're the 2nd person to request more info. on spodding so that's on our to do list of videos to film. Setup wise you can use something very similar (if not identical) to the marker float setup. Just replace the marker float with a spod or spomb. Don’t forget that spods are heavy so unless you use a mini spod/spomb, you’ll need a dedicated spod rod to do this kind of work. Cheers, Matt.

Thanks for the info, very useful. I understand finding the features (on the lake bed) but what’s the significance of finding the depth? What changes would you make to your approach if it was say 10ft deep instead of 5ft (if you’re using a bottom bait anyway)

Hi Chris, on some days, you want to be as deep as possible, other days really shallow. If you have 3 rods, 10ft, 7ft and 5ft and all the takes are coming on one rod, knowing the depth will allow you to make better decisions and reposition rods to the right depth. Different depths work on different days, different times of year and obviously different lakes.

Hi Matt I like how you explain everthing. But One good question for you? I m casting 130 140 150M.. Do you think that's possible with mono? I think no chance.. I m using Marker lets say 120 m from the bank.. Mono will not survive such a far casting? Thanks. Kris

Hi Kris, wow, fair play, that is a very long way indeed! With a 50lb braided leader and 10lb Nash Bullet mono I can hit 128m with a 12 ft rod but that’s lead only without a baited rig so 115m with a single bait. If you are looking to achieve 120m with a marker float setup them I would choose a different marker float. I haven't done a video on this (I don’t even have one myself (yet) but the Nash marker float system solves the problem of the braid twisting and stopping the float bobbing up. Visit your local tackle shop and have a play and you’ll see why it’s possible. I would use 50lb braided leader and the Nash spod/marker which is only 0.18mm diameter to get the distance required. It’s not a question of a mono shock leader being strong enough but the mono will absorb and lose some of the force on the cast and cost you distance. The braided leader will transfer the max energy to the rod and gain you the metres you need. Hope that helps, cheers, Matt.

Hi Ashley, thanks for commenting, glad that you like the video! On the right waters the combination of a spod and marker rod can be a powerful one but if money is tight there are other options. I often use one rod to do two jobs 😊 Try tying a large overhand loop at the end of the leader so that you can loop a spod on and off. If you can loop a spod on and and off, you can loop a lead on and off. As long as you’ve got some braid for the mainline and a strong leader you can create a spod rod/leading rod setup with just one rod. Do your feature finding with a lead, then use distance sticks or marker elastic to mark the distance, then swap out the lead for a spod and it's done. It’s also useful if space is tight or you have to trek a long way to a swim. Sometimes every gram counts! Hope that helps. Cheers, Matt.

can i ask you a question about clipping up please ? I'm a beginner so I'm trying to get the straight , if i cast out with a lead weight and marker float and find a spot i like i clip the line on to the spool , reel in, then with marker sticks wrap around the sticks , remember how many wraps then transfer that number to the rod I'm going to fish with then clip that line to the spool , ok, so i cast out hit the clip let the lead go down and I'm fishing , so then do i take the line off the clip because if a fish bites the line won't come off the reel, right? if a fish bites and i land it do i have to go through the process of wrapping around the marker sticks overtime the rod comes out of the water? i hope this makes sense and i know its long winded, many thanks for your help.

Hi mate, thanks for your question. You are absolutely right in what you say and your description of the process is spot on. As soon as you’ve cast your baited rig into position, you must take the line out of the clip or you’ll lose your rod. When you’ve caught one or if you have to recast for any reason, you’ll need to re-wrap your fishing rod to the exact same distance before re-casting. All the best with your fishing, Cheers, Matt.

I have a question, you do this on the same day you want to be fishing that spot? I can imagine you want to do this a few days before actually fishing that spot? Are you not spookig the fish in the area and dragging lead and stirring up the bottom while fish could be there? Thank you

Hi mate, I understand your concern and yes you are right, on certain waters on certain days the last thing you want to be doing is thrashing the water to a foam with a marker float setup. TBH I don’t use a full marker float setup much unless I’m rowing out rigs and dropping them next to the float. My preferred approach is to use a leading rod and find the features with that. Ideally I do that in advance of the session and then when I rock up I can make three casts and put the rigs where I want.

im a beginner , I've tried doing this but struggle with the line before the weight hits the water, are you putting your finger on the spool JUST before the weight hits the water or somehow grabbing the line again? ?

Hi mate, so on this video I’m using a few different techniques. Sometimes I’m trapping the line with my finger against the spool just before the lead hits the water, 1-2 ft above the water is ideal. That means I can feel the lead down. I’m fishing with big reels and I can trap the line with my finger because I have long fingers lol. Depending on how big your reels (and fingers) are, you may struggle to do this. Many anglers use their left hand to cup the line against the spool at the right moment. I use this technique when I’m just trying to get a feel for what’s out in front of me. Once I’ve chosen a spot, I use the line clip of the reel and cast against that. This stops the line coming off the spool automatically and as long as I cast just hard enough, I can feel the lead down. I see you’ve already watched my casting video so hopefully this all makes a bit more sense. These techniques take time and practice to get right. All the best with your journey, Matt.

How do you use marker sticks? I am new to it and clip up my marker then use the sticks and clip up my spod and mainline. But usually cast too far if I clip the same length.

Hi Sam, thanks for your question, not 100% sure what’s happening there mate but I’m going to take a guess. By any chance are you putting the line in the clip on the marker rod when the float is visible on the surface? If so you’ll be over shooting by the depth of water you’re fishing. @@sambailey855 Ah yes right I see what’s happening now. So, you should gently wind the marker float back down until you feel it tighten up against the lead, while holding the rod at the angle you are going to hit the clip at on the cast. Put the line in the clip at this point, then when you transfer that distance to your fishing rod and your spod rod, the distance should be correct.

Hi Corey, I understand your concern and yes if used incorrectly or at the wrong time marker floats are an excellent way of removing carp from your swim. I only use them when baiting up accurately is more important than nabbing a quick bite. If I’m doing a day session then I probably wouldn't even bother. I’d just lob some PVA bags out to showing fish and hope for the best! Cheers, Matt.

7:40 NEVER do this.. LOL. That’s why his overkill of a spool is squeaking & crying for a rebuild. Kill a reel just to wet your line or just cast & problem solved.
