There are no standardized tests in BC anymore. I loved the Provincial exams but everything is dumbed down now. 😮

It's hard to say what the best option is in that sense. What are they using now, if anything? Just grades?

@@livinginthelowermainland you should see what is going on...no zeroes, suggested passes, no marks for junior students just some meaningless words... no real standards anymore!

@@johnnyboyvan I have heard about the new no-letter grade system for the younger ages. My wife is an elementary school teacher. But I'm less familiar with how the high school grading system has changed

It doesn’t sound very pc to say it but from what I’ve heard, a big factor that influences Surrey schools ranking and quality is the ethnic demographics that goes there. I’ve seen schools in Newton where it’s mainly one ethnicity, to schools down in South Surrey where there’s far more diversity. Same goes for many of the schools up there in Guildford and, Fraser Heights, Fleetwood. The differences between schools in the good areas (Fraser Heights, Guildford, Fleetwood) and South Surrey vs bad areas of Newton is just night and day. Without a doubt, many would unanimously agree to move to these good areas if money wasnt an issue hehehe

I think a big part of that would be household incomes. Newton has the lowest household incomes based on stats Canada data while South Surrey has the highest. My fiancé is a teacher and often teaches at elementary schools in more inner city neighbourhoods and sometimes kids will show up in the same clothes for multiple days. Add in English not being the language spoken at home and I can only imagine how difficult it would be for those kids.

Some schools in Langley and Surrey are not ranked by Fraser. Why is that???

They must either not do the required or don’t meet some other sorts of requirements. The rankings aren’t the best measure of “good” and “bad” schools though so I wouldn’t solely rely on it

@@livinginthelowermainland Thanks for your reply! I have also heard about that from local Canadians. But for newcomers, we are just tempted to send our kids to the higher scoring school because it seems like a safer bet in a brand new environment

@@michaelsham6632 that's understandable. My wife is an elementary school teacher so I get a bit of an inside scoop. Generally if you can choose a better neighbourhood, the school will follow suit to some extent. I more so advise on the few schools to avoid in a city as there are far more good than bad and they are all provided the same resources from the government

I call a little bit of bullshit. Granted, social economic factors would affect overall score, however if the school is doing what it should be doing, equal to “better schools “then you would see equal or better improvement between the grade 4 and grade 7 scores. However, unfortunately, scores amongst some of the worst ranked schools go down or rather the gap between the haves and the have Nots expands between grade 4 in grade 7 testing. Also, the teacher you’re quoting references how her school feels like it’s 1 million years old… Is that not potentially part of the reason for the poor school? I mean I know they don’t rank schools based on the quality of the building, but if the school is old and doesn’t have the same resources of another school… Then isn’t it by definition in at least one way and objectively worst school? Maybe if that’s cool, had newer and better resources, it would give the attending children a better opportunity for success.

Thanks for your comment. Where were you able to find stats for the improvement between the grade 4 and grade 7 scores? Would you mind sharing? As for the age & condition of the school, I think it would indirectly play a role. But as mentioned in the video, all schools are provided the same amount of relative resources & funding. Overall, the ranking system can definitely be used as a tool. I just don't think it should be used as a be-all-end-all resource.
