EP #56 - Not for Instagram + Choosing Between Ambition and Self Care
***
The hater and lover are reunited after a month of doing absolutely nothing besides sending each other bedtime texts. Caroline does have one more thing to show for her break, though: a new sport she’s invented. Or at least a concept that will improve the sporting experience for her? The details aren’t important.
The two move onto bigger topics as Caroline shares a Tony Robbins quote that stirred her into action recently: “the path of least resistance will never make you happy.” She’s happily taking on new challenges in her work, while Jess shares a story of turning down a new opportunity in favor of balance and long-term goals. She even references a book (*gasp!*), Radical Candor by Kim Scott, to elucidate her point. They settle on the hard truth that periods of ambition can only exist thanks to periods of rest, and discipline is in the eye of the beholder.
Finally, a couple of dating red flags that SEEM fine, until you get a good morning text from a Hinge dude who thinks he should run for president.

As an artist and creative I’ve found I have to hate 85 to 90 percent of my work before I get into a flow of something worthwhile. And even then my paintings I love the most may start off horribly and takes time to start evolving into something totally different. Those crappy starts are essential.
@Not4EveryonePod

appreciate this, i find the same! i observe that all the artists i know go through periods of absolutely doubting their ability, "all my talent is gone", "im not funny anymore", "i'm not skilled enough", "it was all a fraud" -- and then that season of doubt eventually ends. there are just ebbs and flows

The conversation about ambition really resonated with me. I’m 28 and have been (what feels like) stuck in an entry level corporate position but allows me peace in my personal life. It’s my comfort zone, but also an insecurity of mine as I feel like I should be doing “more”. My goal this year is to try something new and it’s been so hard as the opportunities just feel few and far between at the moment but we’ll get there! Love y’all!

i'm so glad to hear it! it's a tough balance to strike, personal to the individual, and will probably continue to change through your life!

I don't think someone who achieved a lot in something like Marathon or whatever just “naturally good” at it. Behind success like such there are years of hard work. We just don't see it, that's why people think this person just good at it. Nobody is naturally good at something from birth. It's easy to devalue somebody's achievement these way. I am drawing all my life and at school I was working so hard, I was going to after school drawing classes, then I would go to art school after my normal school and come back home like at 9 pm almost every day, and I was like 12 years old. And everybody would just assume I'm naturally good at drawing. But I spend every day all day drawing. If you don’t want to put so much effort you are not going to get the same results so don’t be surprised

for the subscriber makeover, if you want to do it what about something like having them make a pinterest board of generally the style they'd like, but also a board of things they absolutely hate (to then be avoided) so that there can be a bit of a surprise, but also, hopefully no real disappointments if thats the worry
@Not4EveryonePod
@Not4EveryonePod 8 месяцев назад
oo this is a good idea. yeah i think i'm going to do something around having them sign off on the high-level choices (like paint, layout) and then keep the details/accessories as a surprise

(I quit Instagram in April 2021, literally that's why I have to comment here! I come from Spotify just to express my love to y'all.) Anyways y'all are the best, consistently cracking up at y'all and also feeling so heart-warmed. I appreciate y'all's unique flavor of kookiness. -- also, maybe a little woo-woo for you guys, idk -- but I think The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron, and Women Who Run With the Wolves by Clarissa Pinkola Estes, might be really inspiring fuel for you two as creatives. -- you're killing it! Xoxo.

As a @not4everyonepod community scientist, If you were to measure the marathon runners heart rate there are a lot of variables that have to go into the equation to get the outcome of the winner. I enjoy the principle of this new sport, although I am unsure how to measure a winner.

@jazzyg530

While listening I was thinking that the point of a marathon doesn't even seem to be about one winner, imo. It's more about each individual runner pushing themselves and gaining strength, endurance, confidence, being proud of completing the goal, etc. So I don't think Caroline invented a new sport but rather chose to reframe what "winning" looks like compared to when you measure something beyond the one person who crosses the line first. And in this way almost everyone is a winner because they all improved and have something to be proud of for even training and running in the marathon.

Ive been using a dumbed down phone for 3 years now. No SM. No internet. And i love it. I can get so addicted to technology so quickly, that i had to just cut the cord to get my time and brain back. For the argument of consistency: if you add an "e" to "smooth", then you would have to do the same to moon, fool, school, and food.

Whattado: Im dating this new guy that has a smaller package than my previous one. I dont have a lot of experience. But I am taken aback a little bit. I've only had 2 serious relationships so far. My new person is definitely more considerate than my last one. How to not compare? Help!

I'm a creative, writer & academic. I don't consume social media , I'm not on it & feeling like every sentence I write in my thesis is 'shit' is a part of the creative process. I have spoken to so many ppl about this. Don't get discouraged. It's actually part of creation.

I am still happy about my achievements, even years after. and that is because, in today's rat race, they are MINE, I had worked so hard to reach them, and nobody can take them away from me now. (so I may be an exception but I still feel that high from these past achievements. of course I don't ever rest on my laurels)

Would you awesome two consider not having a down-up camera angle? The perspective in general is hard on the eyes. Not on your persons, but generally seeing things that way is weird. At least to me. And probably my soul mate, too.

I’m only 8 minutes in and your new sport talk reminded me of when people have congratulated me and called me brave for things that weren’t scary for me. i don’t feel like I’m brave if it wasn’t scary even if it’s technically a scary thing. So if the marathon wasn’t that hard for someone because usually they do iron man’s or something, i like the idea of the person who persevered the most getting celebrated.

Golf handicaps enable competition between people who are not on the same level. You win if you beat your benchmark more than the others beat theirs. Your new sport could be applying handicaps to other sports than golf.
