Being a long time woven fabric sewist, I have a thing about unfinished edges, even those which don’t unravel. So i much prefer the wrapped over version of the bindings. It looks so tidy! This tutorial was very thorough, and very informative. I’m still quite a novice at knit sewing, desperately trying to get better than wavy and wonky, this was so helpful 💐
@ThoughtfulCreativity

Totally hear you on the raw edges :) It took some time for myself to get over it, it is a work in progress :) when sewing with knits I have come to "feel the fabric" and sort of understand how it works, sometimes I just hold and feel the fabric in my hands for a bit before I start working with it. I know it sounds strange, but it gives me time to think about the best option for this or that material. Also, pressing (if you knits can take it, some are polyester and leave marks, so be careful or use a pressing cloth) saves the day when it comes to waves :)

I enjoyed watching the video. Always nice to have different techniques explained in one instruction. Another brand offering good quality elastic thread is Mettler-Amann : the thread is called Seraflex and has lots of colours. No longer popped seams and no longer need for zigzag stitches since I started using it. I also use it instead of serging the band to the top to reduce the bulk serging creates. I also test the top with the band basted if the band is cut on the bias from a non-stretch fabric. I also like to use foldover elastic as a finish for the neck.

Great video. Thank you so much. You mentioned a foot for top stitching (Edge Joining / Edge Stitching foot) but thought to mention that I have this foot and certainly use it for edge/top stitching, with needle to the far left - gives about 1/8th inch sewing line. I bought it as a 'Stitch-in-the-Ditch' foot (quilting). I thought I'd mention this in case anyone was trying to find one to buy. :) I love the 'stretchy' thread for knit fabric collars. Always very clear videos! I recently purchased Eloflex thread at major craft store. Have you ever had problems with this thread breaking? I am beginning to think the thread is old because gently pull and it breaks!
@ThoughtfulCreativity
@ThoughtfulCreativity Год назад
Hmmm... That's interesting. I have a pink Eloflex and it is the only one that broke a couple of times while I was sewing, but then I adjusted my tension and it was all good. If it breaks at a gentle pull - I would assume the same as what you said, that it might be old... I had the same happen to regular (other brand) all purpose thread that was old. Hmmm... I know people have said under my videos that they want to burn Eloflex thread, lol, but I honestly don't have many problems with it. Maraflex is another one that people love to use. Also, I have done straight stitch with a regular all purpose thread, but as I mentioned in the video - longer stitch length and making sure that the neckline isn't tight is the rule of thumb to avoid popped seams when doing straight stitch on knit fabrics.

@leeway3739

It is 100% everyone's preference, but usually in the garment industry the join seam on the neckband is attached at the shoulder seam. It is the least noticeable spot on the garment when worn. On a raglan sleeve like in your example it would be placed at the back sleeve seam.

Thank you for all your videos. I am new to stretchy fabrics. The neck area of my garment becomes wavy when I top stitch with my machine. Any tips other than the eloflex thread?
@ThoughtfulCreativity
@ThoughtfulCreativity Год назад
You might be either 1) stretching your fabric as you sew, which results in waves 2) the presser foot oressure might be too much for an even feed of your project so it stretches it out, you can adjust that 3) give your neckline a good press (if your fabric allows it) and see if the waves go away, usually they do, ( if the original neckline is not too wavy to begin with)

Hmm... let's see. Most probably your band is too short. I cut mine just a tad shorter than the actual length of the neckline and never had any issues, also keep the seam allowances on a smaller side. I hope this helps! :)

Do you put Eloflex on the bobbin as well.. Probably a stupid question but leave it to me 😅

Could you add lace to a knit neckline? Maybe with the fold under technique... maybe it would have to be Stretch lace or stretch the fabric to a longer cut of lace so that it creates a lace ruffle? 🤔 I haven't sewn lace, but that doesn't stop me from buying it 🤭

Stop buying lace, lol :D if you sew non-stretch fabric to a stretch fabric - you loose the stretch properties. Here you can see lace sleeve in a knit sweater, it will help you understand - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-z0UMFqKcC6Q.html

@Thoughtful Creativity - CRAFT, SEW, DIY 😫 but it's sew pretty! Lol, I do have some that are stretch lace, but this video gave me a great idea. If it's not a stretch lace, I could have a bit of lace peaking out of the the neckline but in the back I could do a keyhole opening that ties closed with the lace like a bow... 🤔 I will have to play with that idea. Thank yiu!

The bias tape that was used on the back neckline, is it of woven or knit fabric?
