Hi Josh, I disconnected my soft copper water line and don't plan to use it again. I shit off the supply line. Should I seal the line as well? I bought a 1/4 inch brass cap but it was too big.

Thanks for the instruction my man. I watched your video a few times before I tried the job. I bought a compression joint, but the guy at Home Depot told me that the flaring nuts which you recommended were only for gas lines. Therefore I only used the regular nuts that came with the joint. After I cut and flared the pipe I put on some teflon tape and tightened things up. Unfortunately it still leaked. I can only think of 3 things that didn't go right. 1. I sanded down the copper pipe a bit to fit the nut on. Perhaps I sanded too much and left room for the water to drip. It felt snug but... 2. I didn't use the flaring tool properly and my flare wasn't that good. It was the first time I did it, so I may need more practice with this tool and soft copper. 3. I should have used the flaring nuts that you recommended. More than anything I wanted to say thanks, so if you can't respond to this lengthy message I understand. Be well sir! -paul joseph

compression joint + teflon tape = failure

There are more intuitive videos on ac line flaring. you can use those as a guide. make sure your flare is taking up to full seat of the flaring nut. a bad flare will leak. Teflon tape does not do much if you have not tightened the flare nut properly and made a proper flare. Honestly for water lines, i prefer to braze these as they are in the wall and a brazed joint beats a flared joint.

Is there a way to cap the line? My son wants to cap his water line since they don't use it.

I did just like the video suggested - all tools and nuts and connector came to $43. The result leaked - I thought the connection wouldn't leak if I could use some washers. I didn't have any so I put in two small ear buds used with head phones - now everything is fine. I will probably get some real washers next time I'm at home depot.

DENNIS LAUZON all i can say in response to this is wowwww...next time leave it to the professionals mate. Not sure about the states, but here in Australia its against the law for anyone without a refrigerant handling licence to work on anything containg refrigerant.

Folks do realize that this video is about the water dispenser line & NOT the pressurized refrigerant line. Also, folks need to use Teflon tape to help prevent leakage.

Hvac copper? K-L-M? Usually hvac copper is thicker walled and L style. Your local hardware is likely to carry water line, thinner walled. Still excellent video.

Pulled out a fridge to do some maintenance and man the copper kinked and leaked. I think the installer kinked it putting it in and it just wants to bend at that point. Sorry, I am putting plastic in so I don't have another freakin callback.

Do you absolutely have to flare the sides

yes, you don't want the copper to pull out.

I'm certain it's more for reducing irregularities in the line to avoid turbulence. Same reason you remove the burrs after working on any piping. Failure to do so will cause turbulence which in turn corrodes or weakens the pipe just beyond the coupling.

This video is incorrect. You can't use flared fittings for water. You need to use compression fittings.

That’s what a fridge ice maker line requires… compression

If you are unsure about the things to do, leave it to the pros. Copper lines a fragile and tricky to work with.

I think it'd be cheaper to hire someone rather than buy all these tools for a one-time DIY repair

Try getting a plumber to work on anything for $43. Most want $75 to $80 just to show up around here. With the proper tools and parts, in the old days I learned to do most work by myself using books from the library. Now you have RU-vid and it is even easier.

and then all you need is a vac pump , gas , charging scales , gauges, oh and braze on a access port . but hey your a licensed fridge text so it's easy . Jesus . NEXT

It's for the ice & water dispenser water line, not the pressurized refrigerant line.
