How to Fix a Broken N64 GameShark v3.3

If you have a Nintendo 64 GameShark (version 3.3) that won't boot up, here's a quick and easy trick that might repair it. You'll need a working GameShark of the same version.

**Before you start, verify that your bad GameShark displays the number "8" as ours did in the video. There are lots of things that can go wrong with these devices, so make sure your issue matches ours.**
**Proceed at your own risk.**
Step 1--Bottom: Insert the working GameShark into your system.
Step 2--Middle: Insert the bad GameShark into the top of the working one.
Step 3--Top: Insert a compatible game into the top of both GameSharks.
Step 4: Boot up your system.
I hope this helps unlock some of your bricked GameSharks.

I want to thank you for helping me unbrick one of my V3.3's, I happen to find another 3.3 in a game store near me today and had heard about this trick but was unsure as to the order of the GS carts (didn't want to accidentally brick the new one), yes this worked perfectly, no my original 3.3 was not key code locked, it definitely had a bios corrupt in it and I tested them both separately and both are still working, thank you again for the easy to understand video.

Mine won’t turn on. I have version 3.3 and there isn’t any 8 on the LED part. It doesn’t show anything there. I got a refund for it so I still have it and didn’t have to return it. If I could fix it, that would be great. I tried it with every game I own, including Zelda, super Mario 64, donkey Kong 64, Yoshis island, Diddy Kong racing, and a some others. I will be getting another version 3.3, but it would be great to fix that one as well. Is there a chance that if it do this, it could Brick both of them?

How about this problem. I boot the gameshark it loads up, i select start game with cheat codes, black screen. Everytime. Either nothing displayed on the gs after that or just a red dash.

I just picked one up and had no idea how complex these things actually are. I was hoping it would be similar to the game genie i have for snes. So basically i have to buy another one to get one to work? Maybe i can just go back to the shop and tell them i need to “daisy chain” (great term there btw) bc they had like 3 more on the shelf.

I may have to give this a try. I pulled out my Pro 3.3 for the first time in several years and was concerned to see that it won't load up. I only just now learned that this seems to be a prevalent problem for many owners. Never knew this in the 15 years I've owned mine.

This one certain shark i did it literally said d after i tried to unbrick it weird.

Alternatively, you could try a game with the right CIC. They usually aren't really bricked but they have configured themselves to boot only a particular CIC. They cannot reconfigure themselves to boot the standard 6102/7101 CIC until they can successfully boot the other. Because Starfox 64 is the only 6101/7102 game, most bricked GameSharks are stuck waiting for that one but they could also be stuck looking for 6103/7103, 6104/7104, 6105/7106, etc.

What are the lists of games for each of these CICs? I have two "bricked" GameSharks (can't do this daisychain trick since both are bricked) but I had theorized *years* ago that what you described was the issue. I always remembered seeing Yoshi Story, etc. listed before it got bricked and I assumed that's what my problem was but never got around to fixing it 15 years later.

I used to use the boot/save list at elitendo.com. I think there's still a mirror out there. Barring that, you could just search for "N64 6103 games," "N64 6104 games," "N64 6105 games," etc. Most games are 6102 including early first and second-party games. 6101 is only Starfox 64. There are many 6103, 6104, 6105 games but they are almost exclusively 1st/2nd party (later Nintendo/Rareware titles). I think the only 6106 games are Yoshi's Story, F-Zero X, and Cruis'n' the World. It's possible to make a thorough list by looking at the ROMs but I don't know if anyone has bothered.

@@emmettturner9452 But as I'm dumb, now I know it can boot : only with Lylat Wars. So if I try booting it up with another game it won't load, how should I operate to definitely "unbrick" it?

I took a 2.1 and a 3.0 and it didn't work the 3.0 is the broken one is that why it isn't working? Edit:for some reason the 2.1 boots when I put them together 2edit:I'm pretty sure it's key code locked

nice trick. it was probably just set to the zelda keycode and you changed it back to the default off camera. you can also use the keycode trick to reset it back if you don't own it. I have only tested it on gameshark versions that match both the gamesharks used in the stack.
