How to replace the battery in a gameboy cartridge.
No sound. FAQ:
q: How did you melt the pen?
a: I held it over a candle. Not into the flame, but very close. When it started to deform, I knew it was molten. It was the plastic part only.
q: How did you remove the old battery?
a: I ripped the welds between the battery and its holders carefully, not to damage the solders between the holders and the circuitboard.
q: What did you scratch!?Why?
a: The lower battery holder. My ripping skills turned out to be inadequate to perfectly perform that ripping on them, so in this case I just cut it with a scissors. It became flat, which is bad if i want good, reliable contact with them, so I scratched it to make its surface rougher.
q: Where can I buy that specific button cell?
a: Well I bought it in a cell shop in Hungary, where I live.
Giving directions to that shop probably won't get you closer to the solution. All I can say is to google it!
q: The tabs are broken. what to do?
a: This guy may have the answer.:

that melting the pen for a screwdriver was an ingenious solution to a problem that should have never existed in the first place

Dude, you deserve a medal. I was getting ready to take one of these cartridges apart to clean them, thinking I could use a phillips (or at least a triwing) and came across this weird inverted screw from the pits of hell and was like "well, now what?" The melted pen took under 30 seconds and a few tried but worked incredibly. just used a cheap ballpoint paper mate and a lighter. I haven't even finished watching the video because the first 45 seconds was so freaking helpful. Thanks.

That's probably the worst way I've seen it. The pen is fine, it's a known trick, but don't use the plastic of the case, scratch the lower sleeve or use normal tape. You need electrical/insulation tape. You put the lower one on the + side (something you forgot to mention and is very important) and the upper one on the - side. You put some tape under the lower one, place the battery on the lower lever, put the top level in position and wrap it once around. Then wrap again and tuck it nicely away.

Thank you for this post. The pen idea worked well. I used the shaft from a gel pen. I had to melt it twice to get the impression to take then it worked. I opened up my FF Legend 3 cartridge with some small battery with no markings. The board was different so I had to modify the procedure slightly. In essence, it was the same thing. It all worked very play. Thank you for this post! I love this type of stuff, kudos to your ingenuity and use of common materials.

thank you so much, I found my gold after so many years and I was gutted to find out it did not save. I was told that the reason for this was because I used the "cloning" glitch too many times back then, turns out that is not the case and with the help of your video, all is good with gold! Thanks for this, nostalgic old school gaming FTW! XD

This video really helped me out because I didnt have a game bit and wasnt sure how i was going to open my cartridge. I just have one thing to say about where anyone can find those specific batteries: Singing cards (birthday or other occasions). Pry those cards open and inside are slightly used batteries! For free if you receive them as a gift :)

Did that yesterday. Although I cut the spot welds with an x-acto knife, I didn't pop them. Took my a few minutes to do. I used a cr 2032 battery as it can be used as well. I also put the battery on differently. I didn't use the old skirt as I wrapped it in electrical tape. I used a 2-1/2 inch piece of electrical tape, then laid it under where the battery rests and wrapped it around. I also use a small peice of twice folded tape to lift the battery. The case bugles a little but it works now.

This is awesome because there is no way anyone in my family was going to go through the trouble of soldering and attaching a new clip thing for the new battery to get a gameboy game to work again.

I just fixed mine. I just put a small piece of electric tape over just the surface of the battery and it works fine. He did it the harder way for sure.
