Got a dryer that won't heat and you think the timer is bad? Why not try to fix it for a few pennies?
Its a long video, but it shows you everything start to finish on figuring out if the timer is really bad, and how to fix it. Works for Whirlpool, Kenmore, Amana, Estate, Roper, and many other sub-brands.
The fix works for the following (but not limited to) part #s:
W10186032 Dryer Timer
W10185972 Dryer Timer
W10185988 Dryer Timer
W10185970 Dryer Timer
W10642928 Dryer Timer
W10185976 Dryer Timer
...and many others that look similar!
This fix may not always work, but I've found it to work rather well, and should get you a few more months if not more before it inevitably dies. Newer revisions of these timers seem to be longer lasting. If you need to order one, Appliance Parts Pros' has a good model checker to ensure you get the exact timer, as many of these types need the exact-matched number, despite many looking similar. Excellent video. I checked all the switches, igniter and solenoid coils and all looked ok. Then last night I looked for more troubleshooting ideas and saw a video how to check and replace the timer. This morning I came across this video that not only shows how to check it but also how to take it apart and fix it. I might have to replace the timer one day, but cleaning the A contact fixed the problem.

@@bensappliancesandjunk Just a FYI tip, you can use some Aluminum foil tape and put 4 to 5 pieces on the white prong, cutting the edges off and working it down well, then the plastic prong will push the NOW THINNER Contacts together as they should be, contacting fully. Its safe, and works well.

Great job explaining it. This repair does fix this issue and can save lots of money. These new replacement timers cost $60-190. I also have bought 2 from Amazon and they had the same issue where the contacts were not making so it’s possible this problem is on a lot of this style of timer.

I run a used appliance store... That's how I get the machines for my videos. The number of dryers with these timers that have this issue is... frightening, and I know I'm small potatoes compared to other stores regarding these things. We always leave the timer *last* on what we check, because thermal fuse, element, ect are more likely. But unlike older machines where bad timers make up maybe 2-3% of bad machines, whereas these newer ones its closer to 15%.

So while this didn’t fix my problem it pointed me in the right direction on what to replace. I filed the contacts really good and still didn’t have continuity between A and C. Sometimes I’d get it intermittently though. My guess is that the contacts are just shot and I ordered another timer. Thank you anyways! Edit: I DID fix it! I took needle nose pliers and bent the far right contact just a bit towards B and it was full continuity every time I switched to high heat modes (timed dry, automatic) and made sure there wasn’t continuity on other modes. The contacts were just a little bit too far apart.

@@bensappliancesandjunk I have done this. I would think the amount of damage to the contacts would definitely have an effect in the longevity of the “repair”. I have tried to find a source fir the tungsten contacts and manner of removing and replacing them. Source for the whole contact arm:lever would be very helpful. Think I will go to my shop and see if I can use some from the other side of the timer. They look to be the same length. If the contacts are not on the wrong side, I might get lucky. Looks like I would have already checked that, but it has been a while.

Well, the answer is in. My timer failed yesterday 5/16/21 about 6 months after “reconditioning”. I’ll admit my repair could have been more thorough when filing the points though quite a bit of the contacts were worn away. I have disassembled the timer again and there is barely any contact left to bother trying again. New timer that has been sitting on the workbench is now installed. Still a great fix to get you through tough spots!
